Tuohy, who has accomplished so much since his appointment to this oflice seven years ago. During his stay here, Father Tuohy has raised the status of the Prep immeasurahly by means of higher academic and disciplinary standards. In the course of his administration he has expanded the social and athletic programs of the school organizations. His personal energies are always devoted to the advance- ment of the students and the good name of Seton Hall Prep. DEDICATION 5 POPE JOHN XXIII HABEMUS PAPAM. 44We have a new Pope? Nineteen days after the death of Pope Pius XII, the world rejoiced when Nuncio Cardinal Roncalli assumed the Chair of Peter as Pope John XXIII. Since his ordination in 1904, Pope John has been in continuous contact with people and their personal as well as their political problems. As the two hundred sixty-first successor of St. Peter, Pope John XXIII reigns as the Pastor of the half billion Catholics throughout the world. We at Seton Hall are indeed fortunate in possessing such a noteworthy staff of administrators and instruc- tors. The members of the priesthood and the laity comprising this staif, while governing and educating those in their care, are dutifully fulfilling their own private destinies. ffiz The Most Reverend The Most Reverend Martin W. SENIORS While the administration and faculty can di- rect, only the Senior can inflame the student body into a vital, moving force. To him the underclassmen look for leadershipg on him the school authorities depend. Whenever there is an inert senior class, there is also a lifeless school. The Senior's role is both important and necessary, but it is not a joh for which he is unprepared. Three years at the Prep under the influence and example of other senior classes is a fine preparation for this new, mature role. Certainly such a background will enable him to face his duties as a Senior, as well as any duty which he might encounter during life. Q1 fps my STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS SENIORS PETER J. MARCH SETONIA Ageless shadows fall Oier the emerald alleys Setonia, raise thy towered halls. Out of storm and flame To tradition true You have come in glory Setonia, under the White and Blue. Pledge of loyalty To Fidelity Shoulder to shoulder Men of Setonia Loyal, Faithful, Alma Mater She shall ever he. Defeat or Victory Stand in unity Shoulder to shoulder Men of Setonia Loyal, Faithful, Alma Mater She shall ever be. 60 The ring. . . the distinguishing nznrk of the senior. alley, the rings are here! Duiiy Hall was the scene of excitement that day. The senior rings had finally arrived, and now the cafe was a model of mass confusion. The lounge was intended for Seniors, yes, but not all at one time. However, everybody got his ring. From the conjested lounge emerged a new being: a complete Senior. ' A The rings are striking, but what are they all about? The stone is blue, the color which enshrouds the Blessed Virgin to whom Setonia is respectfully dedicated. For over a century Her vigil has seen Her sons march through storm and flames and emerge in greater glory. Irrespective of the hazard, yet forward has come Setonia to the high place .she now occupies among the great schools of the nation. The Chapel is the nucleus around which Setonia revolves. The oldest building on the campus, it stands in mute tribute to the men who have knelt silently within its walls and who have gone into the world and contributed to it and to the great name of Seton Hall. The love and acknowledgement of our Blessed Mother's protection and Setonia's proud history are encased in our rings . . . the Class of '59. 61 l ii, fQ,fQ.:2'S :. ,. ..f:: : ! ref:-:iii :J ALL FOR SETON H DID MOST John Murray M Q W I lg TO SUCCEED MOST LIKELY Howard Smith A , ii S-fl'-5 l ' 1, Q. Only the firm support of the under- classes for athletic events, shows, and drives makes these things successful. Underclass years are important ones. There is no ideal Senior who was not an ideal Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior. It is a time to learn Hthe tricks of the trade, profit from one's mistakes, and obtain that all important experience. Real- izing this, Seton Hall provides a full athletic program with the best facilities and personnel to teach the student coordination and to weld his body into an effective unit. In addition to its serv- ing as a means of relaxation and health, athletics also performs the important function of building character. The elements of fair play, team spirit, and striving for a common goal are all of inestimable value in the molding of a perfect Christian gentleman and Setonian. Alter- nating at center were Al Spagnuolo and Gay- ton Ciccone. Outstanding linebackers were Bill Alworth and Bob Valerian. Directing the Pirate backfield was quarter- back Tony Caputo. Sparkplugs of the ground attack were left halfback Charlie O'Connell. who scored sixteen T.D.,s for the school scoring record, right halfhack Larry Yan- nuzzi, an outstanding ball carrier and pass receiver, and fullback Bob Willix, blockbust- ing power runner and an invaluable blocker. The unheralded fifth lnan of the backfleld, Frank Codey, sparked numerous Pirate surges with his dazzling runs. This backiield was further supported by Dave Clark and Richie Coan. On the defensive flanks were Tom Butler and Richie Bonanno, while Jim O,Connor and Richie Karas starred in the secondary. Returning next year will be John Tirpak, Jeff Causepohl, John DeNoia, '4Flip,' Insabella, John Sheridan, and John DiQuollo. EAST SIDE UPSETS HALL 12-0 For the only time in the 1958 season the Pony Pirates met defeat. The fired up Red Raiders scoring once in each half shocked the Pirates with a 12-0 decision. East Side ex- hibited a line ground attack and a rugged defensive line that out hustled the Pirates. john Murray Team Captain John Hughes Dave Clark Richie Coan Bob Willix Bob Parker X Bill Alworth Tony Caputo '-f Phil Keegan Bob Dowling Bob Valerian H '. I -vi Charlie 0'Connell Frank Codey f Larry Yannuzzi Al Spagnuolo PIRATES OVERPOWER BENGALS 25-6 The Pony Pirates went to Bloomfield's Foley Field with an untried offense and a burning desire to avenge last year's loss. The highly touted Pirate line proceeded to tear the Bengals to shreads, and the offense with the fine running of Yannuzzi, Willix, and Codey rolled up yardage. Bloomfieldis only score came within seconds of the half- time gun. The Pirates broke the game open with three touchdowns in the third quarter PIRATES ROMP BLUE DEVILS 51-0 We waited a whole year for a chance to avenge last year's defeat. In this game the Hall evened the count and had points to spare. Charlie O'Connell and Larry Yannuzzi ground out large chunks of yardage for three touchdowns apiece. Big John Murray scored on a 25 yard pass play for his T.D., and Dave Clark contributed a spectacular 67 yard touchdown, which was the longest run from scrimmage turned in by a Pirate this year. CENTRAL VICTIM OF PIRATE SWORD 59-6 This game was highlighted by some swift run- ning from our backs, Charlie O'Connell, Larry Yannuzzi, Bob Willix, and Frank Codey, and some exceptionally fine blocking by the Hall's mammoth line. Beautiful downfield blocks thrown by Murray and Keegan enabled Yannuzzi to go all the way. Ciccone and McCurran teamed up to open gaping holes and spring O'Connell on various plays. and from then on it was no contest. SETON HALL BLANKS ST. MIKES 26-0 Seton Hall struck immediately with Charlie O'Connell taking the opening kick- off and racing 85 yards for his first tally. Minutes later Frank Codey scored the sec- ond Pirate touchdown when he dashed over from the 30 yard line. O'Connell then took up the pace and added two more scores to turn the game into a rout. 84 . --f- ,, PIRATES EDGE TRENTON 14-12 Recovering from their first and only defeat, the Pirates took Trenton Catholic, 14-12. Although the Hall had little trouble in gaining yardage, fumbles cost them many scoring opportunities. After a scoreless first period, 0'Con- nell scampered 24 yards for first blood early in the second period. One of the many Pirate fumbles and a penalty set up the first Trenton score. The Pony Pirates capped a 75 yard drive with Bob Willix blasting into the end zone from 11 yards out. Thus started the seven game winning streak of the Pirates. BAYONNE WALKS PLANK 50-0 Hindered by bad weather, the Pony Pirates edged Bayonne, 50-0. Larry Yannuzzi, leading a host of scorers, paved the way to a rout. Frank Codey scored the first TD from 24 yards out after being set up by Yannuzzils 64 yard kick-off' return at the outset. Seton Hall ended the first half with Yannuzzi scoring three and 0'Connell two. Bob Willix opened the second half with a 22 yard scoring gallop. The second team then took up the pace and closed out the rout with DeNoia and Karas each ' tallying. HALL GROUNDS EAGLES 19-6 ryt, .t..,. i The Pirates continued their winning A - ways with a 19-6 whipping of previously undefeated Pope Pius. Power runner Bob Willix took up the burden of the ground attack as unsure footing prevented Setonia's fleet halfbacks from taking off on their patented long-yardage scoring plays.. Quar- terback Tony Caputo, working behind the mammouth line led by Dowling and Hughes, guided his charges forward for three tallys. Willix opened the scoring in the first quarter, exploding across left tac- kle into the end zone from two yards out. The plunging fullback added touchdowns in- each of the next two quarters to close the day's scoring for tl1e Hall. .K ma, r PREPSTERS TROUNCE GAELS 25-0 The Hall closed out a very successful season by shutting out St. Maryis on Turkey Day. With Codey, Yannuzzi, and O'Connell leading the way, the Pony Pirates took an early lead and were never headed. O'Connell started the scoring u with a pass from Caputo mid- y way thru the first period. Co- s' at f blk dey ended the first half by tak- M - ing a pitch-out from Caputo and racing around left end to score from 14 yards out. The third Hall marker came late in the third quarter when Yan- nuzzi raced thru the middle of the Gaels' defense for a forty yard TD. Codey added the last score in the final period. St. Maryls, playing against a fine Pirate defense, never threat- ened seriously to score. 85 m BASEBALL ' .i . ,gc ,K M , 'PQ Simultaneously with the arrival of spring, there comes borne on the wings of Sport, one of the great- est activities on the campus of Seton Hall. Enthusi- asm runs high as Frank Tracey's Pony Pirates first take the field. The resounding crack of the bat, the anticipation of a winning team brings into view the 1959 Baseball Season. The baseball squad of this season stands solidly built on the framework of la.st year's team, having eight returning starters. The infield, except for a few minor changes, is essentually the same. At third is Wally Metrione, a three year veteran, backed by George Bavosa. Shortstop is ably taken care of by Bill Lennon and Jack Kurzowski. An old veteran, Bill Regan, has been moved from first base to plug the gap at second, solidly backed by Lou Iorio. Buddy McCurran efiiciently fills the empty base. Behind the plate are catchers John DeNoia and Tom Paw- loski. All would not be successful, however, if it were A close one for Larry. not for Bob Willix, Larry Yannuzzi, and John Hughes, who made as desirable an outfield as any coach could have. Behind the starting sluggers, Coach Tracey should have little to worry about. Pitching is the only possible problem that might confront the coaches. However, facing the opposing batters from the mound will be Bob Rudden, Kev Torppey, Bob Parker, Pete Kalus- tian, John Gausepohl, Frank Walsh, and Charlie Moore. Bob Parker, last year's leading picher, will be on the mound as number one pitcher, followed by Kevin Torppey, possessor of a fine curve ball. Pete Kalustian, who saw limited action last year because of an injury, rounds out the pitching staff. Coach Tracey is sure to find some under- classmen to add to the strength of the team. In scoring, the Pirates were led by Pete 0'Connor, whose versatile shooting and bril- liant passing led to many victories. In the opening game, the Pirates scored an overwhelming victory over the Camp- towners from Irvington. In this game, Seton Hall's fast breaking attack was led by Kev Torppey, Bill Regan, and Pete O'Connor. Setonia went on to defeat a tough St. Michael of Union City team. In the next tilt, the Prep- sters faced St. Al's, the Parocial B Champs, who were led by All-Stater, Vinnie Ernst. Seton Hall revenged last year's heart-breaker by beating St. Al's in overtime, 67-62. This was primarily due to the defensive work of Bill Regan and the playmaking of Pete 0'Con- nor. The winning streak was continued with an exciting victory over Emerson which was realized through the rebounding skill of John Murray. Paced by Murray's 17 points, the Hall next defeated Memorial to remain un- beaten. The winning streak was then interrupted hy St. Mary's of Elizabeth, who staged a last period rally to nip the Hall, 53-57. In the next game, the Pirates were defeated by Belleville because of careless passing and poor shoot- mg. The St. Patrick's game found the Setonia live performing poorly until Coach Tracey put in his substitutes. As soon as Dan Courain, Jack Merck, and Frank Walsh entered the game, a victorious atmosphere prevailed, and Seton Hall won. The Pony Pirates were hit by a tragic mid- season slump which resulted in four consecu- tive losses to top powers, namely, Trenton Catholic, Jefferson, Bloomfield, and Central. Suddenly the team came out of its slump with a rousing victory over rival Immaculate. This game saw great clutch performances by John Parker and Tom Crane. Encouraged by this victory, Seton Hall went on to defeat South Side, Valley, and Orange. In the annual game with its greatest rival, the Valley Knights, the White and Blue's height proved superior as Setonia scored an overwhelming victory, 58-36. This game was highlighted by Pete 0'Connor's twenty-four points and the team's excellent playing. The tournament-bound Pirates, foresee- ing the necessity of a victory over Orange in order to gain a seeded berth, rose to the occasion by downing the Tornadoes, 53-33. The victory was sparked by the aggressive play of John Parker. Seton Hall then traveled to New Bruns- wick, where they encountered a tall St. Peter's squad. It was a seesaw battle which saw many disputed calls resulting in a two point loss for Seton Hall. The Hall's next foe was Bergen Catholic, ranked as one of the top Group A teams in the state. Going into the game, Seton Hall was the definite under-dog, but this fact did not deter the Pirates, attack as the squad displayed its finest team effort in trouncing B. C., 68-38. This brought the Pirates' record to 11-7 and gained them the sixth seeded position in the Essex County Tournament. The cross-country team of '58 preserved and contributed gloriously to the enviable reputation of Seton Hall's past track clubs. The team. under the expert guidance of Mr. Willialil Persichetty, compiled a record of eight victories and only one defeat at the hands of group B state champs Holy Trinity. This year's team was sparked by the nsopho- more sensation of two years ago, Ed Wyrsch. Close on his heels was co-captain Art Guterl and letternlen Jinl lWIcMah0n, George Rennie, Adam Ferret, Andy Burger, Joe Czarnecki, Vinnie Kavanaugh, Hancell Gordon, and John Cosgrove, a promising Junior. Catholic Track Conference Meet. A strong Freshman team behind the lead- ership of Alex Frankel, Bryan Fallon, and Ray Wyrsch compiled one of the best Fresh- men records held at the Hall by placing third in the Catholic State Meet and copping Hrst honors in the Marist Invitation Tournament. Home and away matches for this year will be against Newark Academy, Nutley, and Caldwell High Schools, Summit PAL, Rose- land, Veritas, Hawthorne, and Hackensack Rifle Clubs. The Freshmen have already beaten Maple- wood and Hackensack and are expected to continue their success. The key men of the Frosh are John Arminger, Don Vaillancourt, Joe Fusco, Nick Aracio, and Dave Zeigler. Hall Prep is also ready to claim supremacy after viewing this year's squad. The Pirates' team consists of ten play- ers, nine of whom are returning lettermen. The veterans consist of four Seniors: John Gannon, Richard Kinney, Victor Saccone, Art W'o1f, and five Juniors. The Hall will have one of its greatest teams in many a year. The Racqueteers' schedule contains such teams as Jefferson of Elizabeth, St. Mary's of Rutherford, St. Benedict's of Newark, St. Peter's of Jersey City, Bayonne, Bloomfield, and their perennial opponent, Dickinson of Jersey City. We are confident that our squad will live up to its expectations. Art Wolf Mick Kinney John Cannon The 1953-1959 Varsity Swimming Team continued to follow successfully the paths blazed by its predecessors in interscholastic competion, statewide and nationally. At the inception of practice, there was the problem of filling the places of the key men who graduated in 1958. In the midst of pre- competition workouts, Mr. Harry McGar- rigel, the coach of previous years, resigned and the task of moulding the aspirants into a team fell on the shoulders of the newly ap- pointed coach Mr. James Fetten. The record of the team attests as to how well he achieved this goal. The three losses that the team incurred in competition were to the three outstanding teams in the state, and, even in defeat, the natators acquitted themselves creditably. The victories, eight in all, in scholastic competi- tion were won over the best available com- petition in this area. The team record was the best of any Catholic school in the state. While the performances of co-captains Gary Doninger, Mike Switek, and Bill Ledden along with Dick McDonough, a Junior, were outstanding, the success of the team for the season was as much due to the combined team effort as it was due to individual per- formance. Each and every member of the team contributed his share proportionately to the season's success. Row I: W. Ledden, C. Doninger, M. Switek. Row 2: R, Kenney, A, llarden. L. l.aPlaca. With the experienced Juniors and Sopho- mores returning for the 1959-1960 season, plus some promising Freshmen prospects, the outlook for next season is justifiably op- timistic. The cullnination of competition for the season was participation in the National Cath- olic Interscholastic Championships at Villa- nova, the Metropolitan Catholic Interscholas- tic Championships at Seton Hall, and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Champion- ships at Princeton, N. Former Notre Dame and Baltimore Colt player, Luke Higgins, took over line play, while Don Roden ably produced a fleet hackfield. With the unusually heavy schedule, the J.V.'s came through with a 1-4 record. Opening their season against Bloomfield, the Pony Pirates dropped a close one, 14-6. In the next game against Montclair, John Amabile took the opening kick-off and, he- hind well-timed blocking, galloped 70 yards for the initial tally. However, high-spirited Montclair came from behind to upset the ,l.V.'s. 100 Never discouraged, the J.V.'s then ran all over East Orange with the fine running of Smith and Champi who took a heavy toll of yards. The ,l.V.,s then dropped their next game to powerful Irvington. In their final game, the J.V.'s almost avenged their previous loss to Montclair hut fell short as time ran out, losing 24-18. Despite their poor record, the Pony Pi- rates should produce some line material for Mr. Verducci's varsity squad next year. Half- backs Smith, Amabile, and Champi seem the most promising prospects. On the line are John McFadden and Jim Dowling, whose of- fense and defensive ability should prove valu- able in the future. J. V.'s FINISH UNDEFEATED As usual Coach Verducci turned out another great Junior Varsity Basketball Squad. The team was well balanced and it always displayed that great fighting spirit, which is symbolic of all Verducci-coached teams. The starting team consisted of John Gausepohl, Bob Oscar Robinson, Richie Dec, Bill Cummings, and George Kunka. The Pirates seemed to be well balanced with sharp- shooting from Robinson and Dec, along with fine rebounding from Causepohl and Kunka. The offensive attack was led by the fine ball handling of Bill Cummings. The J.V.'s opened their season by defeat- ing Irvington, 67-47. St. Michael's of Union City provided the Hall with its first real test, but the clutch foul shooting of Richie Dec climaxed a 54-53 victory. Before long St. Al's, Emerson, and Memorial had found them- selves defeated by this talented five. The highlight of the season was the over- time victory against St. Mary's of Elizabeth, which saw Gausepohl, Robinson, and Kunka score double figures. The Pirates continued their winning ways by driving past Bellville, Saint Patrick's, Trenton Catholic, and hand- ing ,Iefferson its first defeat in ten games by an impressive score of 85 to 45. In the space of the next two weeks the Pony Pirates record stood at 15 and 0 at the expense of Bloomfield, Central, Immaculate, and South Side. After easy victories over the Valley and Orange, the Setonia squad ran into a stub- born St. Peter's squad, which was sporting a brilliant I4 and 1 record. This record did not impress the Pirates as they trounced the Cardinals with a spirited second half rally by the score of 61 to 49. The Pirates finished their season by another victory over Bergan Catholic making their record 18-0, thus raising Coach Tony Verducci's hopes for another E.C.T. Champ- ionship. Row 1: P.
