XILED AND EXPLOITED was the way we felt about our senior service at the Margaret Hague Ma- ternity Hospital. Here we met our longest hours and did some of the most menial tasks, but in return were rewarded with the opportunity of taking charge of the sacred moment of birth. Our first experience with the patient and the pel- vic at the baby factory was in the out-patient clinic on G level. We learned to measure and feel small parts and vertex, to draw blood without a syringe, and finally emerged with highly educated fingers. Lectures introduced us to Dr. Riva and his AO stain, Dr. Breen and his ovarian tumors, and Dr. Andreson, who quietly revealed the virtues of a presacral neurectomy. We also met many attendings-Dr. Wagner taught the proper way to cut sutures, Dr. Bookrajian how to feel a cervix and smoke a cigar at the same time, and all the rest who proved that there are hundreds of ways to do an episiotomy. The military atmosphere was broken by the smil- ing face and charming manner of Dr. Kubes, who im- pressed us with his ability to do GYN procedures from below. We were a bit disappointed when he an- nounced that he could not show us a vaginal cesarean section at MHMHI But GYN was not all surgery to us, for PID reigned supreme in our junior year, and how to make a diagnosis without a pelvic kept us occupied as seniors. Pit drips that seemed endless, early morning blood rounds, late night ambulance calls, and examinations that covered anything and everything, made us happy to give the Hague back to the obstetricians when our six weeks came to an end. af' Lili' lil QQ 'A l I 'Q' ll A ,,l,,u,, ci T5 ' fir-, .
