igguqs iw N I -ft? P R. Seidel, H. Teagno, Dr. Stevenson, C. Mess. The first attempt at student government at Seton Hall took place with the organization of a Student Council in September, 1962. This action was prompted by the fact that during the last two years of medical school, unlike the first two, the class members are dispersed throughout the hospital, and are therefore unable to voice their opinions about problems which may arise in their daily activities to any administrative authority. It is hoped that the Student Council will fill this need, and serve as an official student-faculty liaison for all classes. Dr. Stuart S. Stevenson serves as faculty advisor to the young organization, and acts as chairman of the formal sessions. Dr. Stevenson is also a member of the Executive Faculty Committee, and thus is able to present any suggestions the Council may have discussed to this ruling body. The Council is composed of nine members: the presidents of the four classes and an elected member from each class. The senior class has two elected representatives. Meetings are held month- ly, and presently business has been confined to drawing up a constitution and developing a protocol for the organization. STUDENT COUNCIL PHI RI-IO SIGMA f-. The objectives of Phi Rho Sigma are clearly stated in its laws: first to promote good fellow- ship among congenial men of medical school and college, second, to encourage a high standard of professional work, third, to assist, by every hon- orable means, the advancement of its members. At Alpha Rho Chapter the social phase consists of monthly meetings at which food and drink are furnished, along with conversation, debate, and business. There are also regularly scheduled so- cial events. The professional phase of the Chapter's activi- ties consists of lectures and films, often on sub- jects in the paramedical sciences which are of interest to the members. The Organization spon- sors an annual Charles M. Berry Memorial Lec- tureship at which time a well-known individual, usually in the medical profession, is invited to discuss his field of endeavor. The benevolent phase consists mainly of aid to the membership, the college, and the community. Each Christmas, the Fraternity distributes small gifts to the or- phaned children on the wards of the jersey City Medical Center. N. Salemo, R. Lather, P. DeRosa. 142
