D. V ACH YEAR, it is the pleasant task of the yearbook editors to set aside a few pages of their work to honor a man chosen by the s me graduating class for his contribution to their education. It is seldom that students are as fortunate as we in having the op- portunity to consider a man who has distinguished himself not only in our immediate family, but throughout the world of medicine. The special zeal and talent of this great physician has led him to the top of his field at the three medical schools in which he has taught. It is through his efforts that the Department of Medicine at the Seton Hall College of Medi- cine has the learned faculty and prestige it holds today, and we, as students, have the benefit of their collective experience. His enthusiasm for the phil- osophy of learning by doing is infectious, and his familiarity with the medical literature inspirational as to what the ambitious student can ac- complish with self discipline and. dedication to self education. He received his pre-medical education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, and in 1932 was graduated from Western Reserve University Medical School, Cleveland, Ohio. In the same year, he tra- veled to Boston in quest of graduate education in the field of internal medicine, and was appointed as one of the first interns on the newly formed Fifth fBoston Universityj Medical Service at Boston City Hospital. After one year as a Re- search Fellow at the Evans Memorial Institute for Clinical Research in Boston, he returned for a course of resident training at the Boston City Hospital, at which time he was appointed as an Instructor in Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine. In 1937, he became an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University, and in 1942, rose to the rank of Associate Professor. In the same year, he was appointed Physician-in-Chief of the Service on which ten years earlier he had served as an intern. While at the Boston City Hospital, he served as Co-ordinator of Interns and Residents, and was Chairman of the Committee for Postwar Planning and the Medical Records Committee from 1942 to 1946. In 1944, he studied Tropical Medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical School, Washington, D.C., and participated in a field trip to Central America. 'iw L was L? 7 J , L. .
