Give me your voice to write Of his heart, with just my pen Though it shows little light On those pathways that he ran: Those sarcastic smiles, with brighter eyes But his heart was made this way As a friend to all he made his name So remember him this day. What is the great truth in shady skies? What idea is in view? When the Reaper finds a wasteful aim At the so talented few. o As we watch his shining, guiding light From our short sight, slowly dim Who is it that can guess what is true In that cold fate’s lonely whim. But try not to let all of Griefs might Fill your emptied mind with pain Because no good for him would this do For joy lets him live again. So let pass all of those shades of grief And remember your belief For, although he passes through time’s door, He goes on to find there’s more. Thomas Skeren ’84 A Brief History Of Servite In answer to repeated requests from the Archdiocese of I .os Angeles to assist in the field of education, the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) accepted the twenty acre site of Archdiocesan property on La Palma Avenue in Anaheim. California in 1957. It. John M. Gillespie. O.S.M. a former principal of St. Philip's High School in Chicago. Illinois was chosen as the founding principal. After a farewell ceremony complete with a hoy scout guard of honor and Fr. Kevin M. Fitzpatrick. O.S.M. directing the high school hand to the tune of California. Here 1 Come and a police escort away from the city of Chicago. Fr. Gillespie anti his mother began the long drive to the West Coast in a Ford station wagon which was donated by the students of St. Philip's High School. Bringing with him whatever equipment could lx- spared, he immediately set to work organizing prospective students, parents and would-be benefactors upon his arrival in May of 1958. When the school year began in September of 1958, the building was little better than a roofless empty shell. Fr. Manettus M. Ortman. O.S.M.. pastor of the Servite staffed St. Philip Benizi parish in Fullerton, offered to put his grammar school children on half-day sessions. This gave the entering 110 freshmen borrowed classrooms at St. Philip's school. It also provided for a windowless storeroom to serve as offices for the principal, registrar and the bookstore. Athletic Fields would be needed at the La Palma location. Several men offered their services and moderate equipment, but the job was too much for them. Professional grading equip- ment had to be hired at the considerable expense of $1400.00' Servite High School was completed in December 1958. The religious community of Servite priests and brothers took up residence in the classrooms on the second floor of the school building. Fr. Bernard M. Paul, O.S.M. celebrated the first Mass on Christmas morning 1958 at the school. The Completed high sch X)l was opened for classes on January 5. 1959. It was formally dedicated by His Eminence James Francis Cardinal McIntyre on the feast of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order on February 12. 1959. Fr. Dedication Mothers And Fathers Of Servite Students Dedicating the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Hdition of the Servite Annual is the result of much reflection and discussion. It seems inappropriate to select one person on whom to focus special honor and gratitude. Thus we have chosen the PARENTS of Servite Students, past and present. Servite High School is now. as it has ever been, dependent upon the faith and trust of the parents of its students, and in no small measure upon their continuous generosity of time, talent, and financial support.
