Liberal Arts The Servite High History Department concen- trates in the areas of Ancient. Medieval and Modern World History, United States History, Advanced Placement American History, and United States Government. The aims of the department are to give students a solid grounding in the basic issues which have characterized man and his development down through the ages. Contemporary history is also stressed through current event classes and especially through the Great Decisions program. The English Studies Department offers a five- year-in-four program at Servite for those students who elect Advanced Placement English. Through the studies in literature and language structure the students develop their insights not only to the literature of English speaking peoples, but also their creative abilities at composition. The Language Department of Servite offers a four year program in Latin, Spanish, and French. Language is communication. Its study entails the skills of communication which are understanding the spoken word, speaking, reading and writing. The primary aim is to help the student attain this language proficiency. To be able to communicate in a foreign language, to participate in a different culture, to read in another literature is a broadening and lasting educational experience, a form of personal fulfillment. Through the study of languages, this department further aims to develop an appreciation of the Chris- tian cultural background and a better know- ledge and understanding of other peoples as members of the family of nations.
