03 TABLE OF Faculty The more free Man's mind is, the more he reflects: and the more intensively does he become arranged in closely related systems. Everybody knows that noth- ing is more impossible than to inhibit the growth of an idea. Applying this in its widest sense, the surest affirmation we can make about the human future is that nothing will ever restrain Man from seeking to think and essay every- thing to the end. (Teilhard de Chardin) 10 CONTENTS Sports... 46 Thus this Yearbook intends to follow the events of 1968-1969 in hopes that it may be a source of continued reflection. Activities... 96 Classes 4 Natural and Physical Sciences Science at Servite is extended over a period of three years of study offering the student a choice of Intro- ductory Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Phy- sics and the Advanced Chemistry Institute. Students can likewise be selected to lx participants in the Science Seminar. These studies combine the latest developments in the substantive and environmental dimensions of science education with the latest devel- opments in the use of laboratory techniques and instru- mentation. The goal of science at Servite is to allow young men to use their natural faculties to discover the physical and biological laws and thus come through creation to know and love God the more. The student endowed with faith, therefore, sees science as God revealing Himself in nature. He thus not only experi- ences in the study of science the joy of intellectual accomplishment, but he also knows another facet of God revealing His love for man. THE UPnH URGE NC-VBEl Religion and Counseling The Religious Studies and activities at Servite, as in any Catholic High School is the Raison de' Etre of Catholic Education. Since it is relegated to a sub-standard course in many instances, our purpose here is to make Religion the vital and im- portant position it deserves. Our religious studies are so designed as to give a good background of Christian Life as seen in the lives of Great Per- sons in the past, be they Biblical, ancient or modern; be they philosophers, peasants, psy- chologists or saints. The Christian Principles are also studied from the vantage point of lit- erature and science. There are also Liturgical and Missionary activities which the students participate in, to give them the sense ol Re- ligious Action they need. Servite, during the past year, also broadened its Counseling Pro- gram which provided more opportunities for the department to have private interviews with cacli Servite student. i}. 8 toil wVjt s. WfrM-'-:-. WM Liberal Arts The Servite High History Department concen- trates in the areas of Ancient. Medieval and Modern World History, United States History, Advanced Placement American History, and United States Government. The aims of the department are to give students a solid grounding in the basic issues which have characterized man and his development down through the ages. Contemporary history is also stressed through current event classes and especially through the Great Decisions program. The English Studies Department offers a five- year-in-four program at Servite for those students who elect Advanced Placement English. Through the studies in literature and language structure the students develop their insights not only to the literature of English speaking peoples, but also their creative abilities at composition. The Language Department of Servite offers a four year program in Latin, Spanish, and French. Language is communication. Its study entails the skills of communication which are understanding the spoken word, speaking, reading and writing. The primary aim is to help the student attain this language proficiency. To be able to communicate in a foreign language, to participate in a different culture, to read in another literature is a broadening and lasting educational experience, a form of personal fulfillment. Through the study of languages, this department further aims to develop an appreciation of the Chris- tian cultural background and a better know- ledge and understanding of other peoples as members of the family of nations. PRESIDENT Seniors 1969 The school year of 1968-69 marks the termination of the Senior class' participation in Servite life. Certainly the last four years were not wasted. Much growth and learning has taken place. But now, Uie Seniors must depart Servite High School and look to the future, hopefully to an intense, meaningful life. Perhaps from the words in the following passage of Ecclesiastes, each senior may find the strength to break past ties and move forward. There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven: A time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted. A time for tears, a time for laughter; A time for searching, a time for losing; A time for keeping, a time for throwing away. Each senior who receives that hard-won diploma at the close of his high school education knows that he faces a much more challenging battle ahead. It is hoped that Servite has instilled in him the armor with which to meet his new life head on and to conquer its difficulties. True knowledge is obtained through reasoning based upon research ...
