BASKETBALL The 1965-1966 cage season saw Servite cop its second league cage championship in three seasons as the Friars ruled the Angelus loop and were co-champs with Cantwell The Friars, paced by AH-Leaguers Greg Banks. Charlie Day, and Tom Dehrlein, raced to a fine sixteen and ten mark for the season. ipping their first two season contests to Bishop Santiago, the Friars rebounded quickly and ry well in three county tournaments. In the Huntington Beach Invitational Servite took third place die highest finish of any county team entered. The Friars earned the third place award by beating Huntington Beach 59-53, ripping Bolsa Grande, 77-61, and then edging New- port Harbor 69-68, following a third round loss to San Bernadino Pacific . Servite next gained second place laurels in the Valencia Lettermen’s Tournament. Enroute to the runner-up posi- tion the Friars upset Magnolia 88-78, and Valencia 54-45. Then Servite dropped a hard fought 70-67 decision to Loara for the title. League started with a bang as the Friars swept the first found by beating St. Paul 80-70, Mater Dei 32-70. Caijtw '60-52, and Verbum Dei 54-41. St. John Buseo next lost t the rampaging Friars 62-46. The second round of league play was shaky as Servite dropped two of four. First, be. ing St. Paul 74-58, then dropping a crucial pair to Cart- well and Mater Dei, klu|n reboundint win over Verbum Dei for a share of the league crown.
