The areas sur- veyed were coastal shallows and treacherous rocks that never could have been completed by ship. But there were reasons why the boats had never been successful before. We learned and overcame these reasons the hard way. The Bastard Rig, as we fondly called our five ton boom, caused many prob- lems in controlling the boats while lowering them.
