Serra Kizfimlir High School Wlrkrrspvrh Zfrz. Silver ,41r1f1irrrsr1ry 6'iiiiiv1r yliifrivrr 1986 298291604 UO an naman nuns: Inu n-11 -I-I-1 K lil n behalf of the entire Serra Comm unity, we would like to dedicate this 1986 edition of the Serra Juniper in Father Kieran Monahan 's honor This year-'s Jumper staff put a lot of t1me and effort Into this edition, not unlike the time and effort Father put into Serra. Although his years of work were much more productive than ours, we hope our final product can be credited as a representation of that work. Also, that it can be appreciated in the same sense as his years of dedication and experience. For example, when Fa ther arrived at Serra, there was no band nor chorus as we know it today, and no Fall Festivals. The Mother's Club was created to end this predicament. This club organized the Fall Festivals which in turn raised money to buy the instruments and uniforms for the re-estab- lished band. The chorus was soon to follow. Father saw the potential of the Serra ladies through the organization of the girls' basketball program and the enrichment of the already estab- lished softball program. Also, during his term as headmaster, he initiated the annual celebration of the Mother-Daughter Tea for the senior girls. As Serra entered the modern world, Father opened the minds of Serra students with the installation of the computer room., Furthermore, with the realization of the high cost of a Catholic education, he organized the Eagle Club, whose prime function is to raise money for tuition assistance. And lastly, since Father's first year as Headmaster here at Serra, enroll- menthas increased by 3076, a statistic that speaks for itself These achievements are jut a few things that stand out in the midst of many of Father Kieran 's accomplishments. We hope that his memories are fondly upheld in this 25th anniversary edition of the Juniper. 2 25th Anniversary TABLE 0F CDN TEN TS 25TH CLUBS ANNIVERSARY Page 85 Page 4 SENIORS SPORTS Page 17 Page 103 YEARS FACULTY ACTIVITIES Page 41 -I U Page 144 1 9 6 1 fl 9 8 6 UN DERCLASSMEN ADS Page 56 Page 199 HNNIVERSHRY EELEBRHTIIQN l i ' . , ' f,',f is ' 1. St. Mary Czestochowa Church was the site for the Mass that started the festivi- ties, and, who better to head the regalement, than the people re- sponsible for initiating and continuing what is Serra. The main celebrant was Bishop John B. McDowell. He was as- sisted by Rev. Hugh Lang, Su- perintendent of Schools, Rev. Kieran Monahan, 0.F.M., cur- rent headmaster, Monsignor Leon Darlzowski, host pastor, Rev. Luke Ciampi, first head- master of Serra, Rev. Alexis Anaia, 0.F.M., and Rev. Sime- on Distefano, 0.F,M., also a former headmaster. The choir, composed of Serra students, was coordinated by Sister Mary Bernard Novack, assisted by Rev. Michael Bercilc. With the religious part of the celebration over, the festivities moved to the Monroeville Howard Johnson 's. The eve- ning's program included cock- tails, remarks from the current and former headmasters, din- ner, dancing, and a toast by D. Thomas Mistick, the first grad- uating class president 09651. The evening concluded with a slide presentation prepared by Ms. Sharon Navoney, director of Development at Serra. The event was attended by Serra faculty members, Alum- ni, and current Serra students and parents. It was enjoyable evening for everyone. lthough celebrating Ser- 1961 Fr. Luke, Fr. Kieran, and Fr. In September, 1961, Serra's enrollment was 89g in September, 1985, total enroll- ment.. reached 608 in grades,.9 through 12. .Also since that first graduating class of Serra High School in 1965, 2,369 students have been graduated. All those Students weren't just trained scholas- ticlyeither. They were also trained athleticly. Serra has claim to fivevfundefeated athletic teams. Four belong to track and one to football. it Serra truly is 25 years proud. However, there would be nothing to be,,proudp of if it weren't for special people. Thatfs why when someone asks, What is Serra I-IighSchool? , the reply is simple. The necessary ingredient of Serra High School is people. When- ever ,the name Serra is mentioned, the connotation is the people who ,,t remake up Serraw--the dozens of teachers and :hundreds of students who are and always will be Serra. tfrom Serra's first yearbook, 19655 With these types of people the next 25 years should shinefeven brighter. Kieran Monahan, O.F.M., 1976- 1986 We are journeying back in time approximately 25 years to a meeting regarding the soom to be established Christopher Columbus High School. The meeting is to discuss a mascot for the new school. One person suggests the Christopher Co- lumbus Explorers. Another person mentions how difficult pantiloons are to find. Still an- other adds how uncomfortable they would be. Suddenly, they hear a knock at the door. They answer it to find a man solicit- ing money for the Save the Eagles Foundation. That's it! , Someone cried. What? , asks another. Our mascot , said the first, it can be the ea- gle . The eagle truly is a noble bird , said another. The stu- dents would be inspired to soar above the others , still another commented. Thus transpired the transformation of the Chris- topher Columbus Explorers into the Serra Catholic Eagles. Well, maybe that's not exactly the way it happened, but the change in the school's name was the first in a series of changes that would lead to 25 years of pride. Serra was named after Friar Junipero Serra, O.F.M., famed founder of 22 mission churches in California. It was began in temporary quarters at Holy Trinity Parish School on Sept. 5, 1961 with an initial enroll- ment of 89 boys. Serra moved to it's present site at the start of its third year. The cornerstone of the present school building was laid and the school was of- ficially dedicated on Sept. 13, 1963 by his Excellence John J. Wright, Bishop of Pittsburgh. Serra is under the adminis- tration of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of the Immacu- late Conception in New York Cityg 25th Anniversary 7 :Y 25th Anniversary gglebrate your 25th Anniversary. l will pray that Dear Serra Family, On the happy occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport, I iam grateful for the opportunity to express my sincere congratulations and prayerful best Q , wishes, yyyu r 5f1f'W542?Pfz 1, .,, ' of this important milestone in the i School provides a fitting occasion for if give thanks and praise io God for the lirrilfimanygiiblessings He has bestowed upon you. with gratitude upon nti your glorious iiiii dfhistory, you can also look to the future with hope and confidence.yYou, along with all the C iiii C tgpeopwgrof shogpld be proud of their 'wonderful tradition of Catholic education. be withfyou inspirit and prayer as you blesiseyou and all rii students and C ffhcultyyiat Serra Catholic High Schoolwwith an ifibundance ofhappiness, grace and peace May i Lorclybringito fulfillment the good worlc l-le begun in you. We were fortunate enough to have been the twenty-fifth graduating class from Serra. Throughout the year, many attempts were successfully made to make the year special. Over the summer, the Big Broth- er Big Sister program was designed in order to help freshmen get better aquainted with Serra. Then came homecoming and we seniors pulled together once again to build our annual float. The class meetings also proved to be quite beneficial. Every- one responded enthusiastically to such ideas as senior scrub days, which would occur the first Monday of each month, the donation of a sign to Serra, and to a time capsule. None of these ideas, however, would have come through if it Weren't for the 'help of our class moderator, Mr. Nicholas Borrelli. Mr. Borrelli was kind enough to volunteer his time and efforts. So on behalf of the class offices and the entire Class Of 1986, Thank-You Mr. Borrrelli. We couldn't have done it without you. Kieran was both excited and surprised when he accepted the Home of the Eagles sign, below. The sign was presented by the Class of 1986 to the school as a sign of our appreciation and with hopes that all will be fondly remembered. The sign will stand on the island in front of Saint Junipero. K f Seniors 39 PNN ':c:kfO1Q 'f-lifirfa 'Wwsffg in 40 Seniors 1986 FACULTY ADMINISTR TIO WHO'S THE BOSS? Fr. Without the help and support of these kind hearted people it would not have been possible for you to be holding this book. First and most of all we Woukd like to express our most sincere appreciation to Mrs. Jones. She did so much for us. She gave us everything we needed. We can't say how much she means to us. Secondly We would like to thank Father Kieran and the rest of the faculty for their time, patience, and understanding. Especially Mrs. Willoughby and Mrs. Murtha for the endless use of the typing room. Thirdly We like to thank our families for being understanding when we had to spend so much time at school. Now, last, but certainly not least, We would like to express our gratitude to two companies. Buchman Birch Studios for its priceless pictures, and Jostens for their wonderful production. Another thanks goes to the Yearbook staff, but mostly to those who were dedicated enough to work. Once again thank you and may this book be your reward.
