Diane Pe- tersen and Connie Hoxsey were chosen as the most original and best costume. They were the Big Figsf, SWEETIIEART BALL The FFA-FHA 1977 Sweetheart Ball was held February 19 in the Grade School Gym. The theme was Colour My Worldu and the band Independence played. Dean Britt and Cathy Forth were crowned King and Queen. Fresh- man attendants were Liz Stechman and Bill Hooser, Sophomore attendants were Lou Kyle and Kevin Tuftie, and Junior attendants were Gwen Wiley and Mike Warren. ' 'F gps. Freedom Band provided the music. The eve- ning ended with the crowning of Queen Connie Hoxsey and King Leonard Nitiss and their court, first atten- dants Cathy Forth and Scott Tirevold and second atten- dants Tangie Tipton and Dean Britt. Wis. The band toured LeBlanc Factory in Kenosha Tuesday morning and Holton Brass Factory in Elkhorn Tuesday afternoon. Tues- day evening they gave a concert in Mt. Mor- ris, Il. Wednesda was s ent at Great Amer- ica in Gurnee. Tlhe cols.. rainy weather that followed them every dtgy finally cleared up on their way home to erena. The Huskerettes finished their season with a 7- l-l record in the conference and a ll- 1-l record overall. They also placed first in the conference tournament. Cathy Forth was voted Captain and Diane Petersen, M.V.P. Diane Petersen. Mary Mahoney, and Betty Osmund were named to the All Conference Team and Jennifer Robinson received Hon- orable Mention. He was a great help to Mr. Struna in helping new team members to learn moves. Roger had a great year and ended with a 19-8-1 record. He received a second at the Moosehart Tournament, third at the Polo Toumament, and second place at district. I -1- ,f Scott Walsh is the first four year varsity wrestler in Serena High School Wrestling history. He finished the season with an outstanding record of 23-7 and was voted Most Valuable Wrestler by his team- mates. Scott took a first place at the Moosehart Toumament, a second at the Minooka Toumament, a fourth place at the Polo Toumament, and a second place at District. Congratulations on a fine sea- son and a terrific wrestling career at SHS. In addition to the regular matches, the team also competed in the Serena Invitational Tournament, St. Bede Tournament, and the District Toumament at Phillips park in Aurora. Mark Arentsen received honors as MVP while Carter Scofield was chosen by his teammates as captain of the squad. Coach Stegman and the Husker fans had a great deal to be proud of this year. The mighty Huskers pulled in an outstanding record of 24-3. The team took the Little Ten Championship for the third straight time with a record of 9-0. Although they took third in the Plano Holiday Toumament and second in the Regional, they won the championship of the Little Ten Tournament. Small, quick, teamwork, and balance were some of the outstanding features. Dean Britt led the Huskers as M.V.P. He was the team's leading rebounder and was elected to the All Conference team along with Bruce Erickson and Mike Warren. Being the Free Throw win- ner with a .725 per cent, Erickson was also elected to the Plano All Tourney Team. Leonard Nitiss and Brad Warren were voted Co-Captains. Nitiss led the team in offensive rebounds and Brad Warren in steals. Mike Warren was the team's leading scorer averaging 15.3 points per game. He also led the team in defensive rebounds. They took the Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive year. Mary Mahoney was the only track member t is year to break a school record. She broke the 80- yard hurdle record she had set last year. Although Morris, Ottawa, Streator, and Streator Woodland were not part of the little ten track meets, they were good competition for the Serena girls. Ruth Nelson was MVP for the team and Teresa Marshall was voted Captain. The Serena Girls' Track Team should have another excellent team next year. The team is only losing three seniors. The District track meet was held at Streator Woodland. Ruth Nelson took fifth in the 220 yard dash, and the Mile Relay team consisting of Martha Butterfield, Debbie Boe, Te- resa Marshall, and Diane Petersen, also took fifth place. Dave Butterfield, Scott Walsh, Greg Marshall, and Reed Hall were the four FFA members who received their State Farmer Degree, Dave Butterfield was selected as State FFA organist for the fourth year in a row. Mary Butterfield, Martha Butterfield, and Kathy Brocker played in the State FFA Band at the Convention and Jay Kember and Troy Tipton were elected delegates to the Convention. This year's officers were President, Kim Foreman, Vice Pres., Scott Walsh, Secretary, Connie I-loxsey, Treasurer, Brad Warren, Reporter, Dave But- terfield, and Sentinel, Ron Riveland. Five of the six officers attended the National FFA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, in November. While at the National Convention, they also attended the American Royal Livestock Show. The Jazz Band had one of its most successful years, playing at pep assemblies and all ut one of the home ames. Jazz Band also played at tie Winter and Spring Concerts and was selected to play for the LaSalle County Teacher,s Institute on March 25. In April they had a jam session with New- ark H.S. Jazz Band. Graduating seniors are Mark Arentsen, Dave Butterfield, Rick Salzer, and Vickie VanMeter. 49 P0 ERETTES This year's Pomerette choreographers were captain Nan Brannan, co-captain Sheila Tomlin, and Connie Hoxsey. Ten of the Pomerettes attended a one-week camp at Rockford College where they got ideas for some of this year's dances. Their new 50's dance was a great success! The Pomerettes danced at the home basketball games and at assemblies. The seniors performed their dance at the Malta game. The Senior C0urt's duties were to keep order in the lounge and to keep our remodeled lounge neat. During the school Cyear, they participated in many activities. Se- cret A mirer Day was eld on November 23. Two student exchanges were participated in with Mar- quette and Mendota. These were found very worth- while. Six members of the council attended an Old Folks Visitation Day at Rivershores Nursing Home. Four assemblies were sponsored, including a laypnotist, Dr. Ross, on December 9, a Coke Day- hristmas assembly on December 21, where enter- tainrnent was provided by the Barbershoppers, Pom- merettes, and ickie and Ed Van Meter. An assem- bly on archeology was given January 18, and a fire safety demonstration was presented on February 17. Chris Connolly was elected Prairie-8-District Presi- dent at the convention held Februa 10 at Kan- kakee Junior Colltefge. Spring F everrlsay was March 24. Next year's o icers were elected and attended the State Convention in Chica o on April 28-30. Dave Butterfield led the generaisessions this year as State IASC President. Rick Salzer also attended the convention as head of the Credentials Committee, along with Bill Temple, who served as a Recorder to a Discussion Group. Chris Connolly attended the Convention as District President from Prairie-8. Mr. Klein attended as the Serena Student Council Advi- sor. The Senior Farewell Dance was s onsored on May 20 from 7:30 to 10:30. The Councd, is sending delegates to the National Convention in Marlbor- ough, Massachusetts, June 26-30. This year's officers were: President, Dave Butterfield, Vice President, Rick Salzer, Secretary, Bill Templeg Treasurer, Kim Garrew, and Publicity Chairman, Chris Connolly. Co-advisors were Miss Lehnert and Mr. Klein. Not only was David our Student Council President, he was also the State Student Council President. Being President of the Illinois Association of Student Councils is a difficult task but David did an ex STATE cellentjob. He was also in charge of setting up the annual state convention, which was attended by over l0O0 high school dele- gates. With the help of Mr. Klein, David performed admirably all year. We are very proud of Serenals first State Student Council officer, David Butterlield. PRESIDE T BAN This fall the band marched in Westem Illinois Univer- sity's Homecoming Parade. They also marched in the Morris Com Festival Parade and Leland's Home- coming. During the Winter, the band played at all the home basketball games. In December, they performed a Christmas Concert with the Chorus. In February, they held their first Winter Concert. As a money making project, the band sold tee-shirts, popcorn, and soap. This spring, the band worked endlessly. In March, they competed in a solo and ensemble contest at Marmion. Mark Arentsen received a second on his alto sax, Philip Jameson a second on his piano solo, Barb Scheppler a second on her piano solo, Mark Arentsen, Barb Schep- pler, Catie Crackle, and John Shrode on their sax quar- tet received a first. Kay Kember and Margaret Knight received a first on their duet. In April, the band had a Chicken Supper to help raise money for their tour this summer, The month of May brought the annual Spring Concert and on Memorial Day the band marched in the Sheridan Memorial Day Parade. Then, on the Fourth of July, they played in the Parade in Sheridan. These members, as well as the old members, had to prove themselves capable of being an honor student. They were voted on by the faculty members for their qualities of leadership, citizenship, scholar- ship, and service. In the spring, NHS members collected approxi- mately Sl50 for Easter Seals along with the Medical Careers Club.
