For one thing, the characters are all dead. For an- other, there is not one but many stories. Each character rises from his grave and tells about his life. Each character is honest. In death what could be gained by lying ? But why choose SPOON RIVER AN- TI-IOLOGY for a senior play ? Two reasons are that it has proved popular during its longrun on Broadway and that it allows many students to par- ticipate. Another reason is that SPOON RIVER ANTI-IOLOGY is an acknowledged masterpiece. It has been translated into seventy languages and occupies a place in every high school and col- lege anthology of American literature. While the production of a play is an education in speech and in theatre, the production of a masterpiece is more educational in that it is also an education in theater. Still a further reason for choosing SPOON RIVER ANTI-IOLOGY is that it deals with a life we know. Edgar Lee Masters, a Chicago lawyer who died in 1950, wrote this book on the lives of people he knew in his boy- hood homes of Lewistown and Peters- burg, small western Illinois farming communities. Though most of the characters lived around the turn of the century, they seem amazingly contemporary. Perhaps times have changed. But men have not. But the most important reason for pro- ducing SPOON RIVER ANTI-IOLOGY is that it makes us examine our souls. The great teachers from Socrates to jesus have insisted that the basic con- cern of man ought to be his soul. Ed- ar Lee Masters, reflecting the teach- S ings of jesus, tries to show how souls are lost through their blindness to other souls. Griffy the Cooper says that men judge each other by appear- ances. Certainly this is true of many characters. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Pantier hate each other. Aner Clute, a young girl who has an Lmfortunate love affair with an older man, Lucius Atherton, is forced to earn her living selling drinks in a bar because people 28 label her as an evil woman. jeremy Carlisle concludes, Passer-by, sin beyond any sin is the sin of blindness of souls to other souls. But SPOON RIVER ANTI-IOLOGY also shows how souls are lost through blind- ness to God. Willard Fluke believes his daughter's blindness is God's pun- ishment for his sin. But Willai-d's daughter, Lois Spears, is the happiest of women. Willard has not learned that the God of justice is also a God of love and that love forgives. Sch- roeder the fisherman believes that life is dog-eat-dog, that man is made this way, that there is no God who cares. But The Village Atheist, dying of cancer, realizes that to deny God is to live through the senses and think through the senses only, that God is real, that God is love to the man who can leap beyond the senses to faith. A. H. Anderson, Play Director. to . . . Go by mad world! I know he said that I snared his soul, with a snare which bled him to death. f Where is my boy, my boy . . . ory to God in the highest. . . . Jeered at by the yahoos of the street . . . 29 . . . So if you lose, get out of the room . . . V . . He protested all his life long ll . . . A gigantic effort, The Fresh-Soph Team, coached by Norman Neuges, played an exciting season, First in December they won their own Round-Robin Tourney, Then in january they went on to win the Little Ten Tourney, Finally in February they captured the Little Ten Conference Uophy, which marked the end of their season. Overtimes were common in tourna- ment play, Seconds before the final buzzer, Serena hit the tying basket or their opponents tied, But in the three minutes of overtime, the Huskers charged through with the winning points, Pressure brought out their extra drive for success. During overtime the fans became one body cheering the boys on. The crowd focused hopeful eyes on the floor--waiting for the winning Swish. Stomachs churned and hands shook during the three minutes, The fans were behind the team, and the team never let their fans down. A single point or a single defensive block should not be overlooked. Both of these can mean the difference so there, between a win or a loss, All the players contributed to the team's success, The outlook appears good for the future Varsity Team, F reshm en 1 5 - Higher, Brian, higher! The Swan Dance? The Freshman team also had a fine season. Their record of 15--4 speaks for itself. Kenneth Larson, Brian Wright, Kevin Foreman, Dale Skel- ton, Mark Adams, and Mark Mathe- sius were all top players, Coach Norman Neuges foresees a successful season in 1972 for these future sopho mores, FRONT ROW: Dale Skelton, Mark Mathesius, Brian Wright, Kevin Foreman, Kenneth Larson. V. 'S Develop With anxiety and anticipation we five j,V, cheerleaders waited for the com- ing season. From the first exciting game to the very last one, we learned to work together, share ideas, co- operate, and Strive for the school spirit. When the season was about half over, our new uniforms finally came, and we wore them with much pride and dignity for our winning team, Though it was hard to keep our chins up and smiling all the time, we did our best to represent Serena proudly, We hope next year's j.V,'s have as much fun and many friendships as we have experienced. Halftime--and all is well? The j,V, and Varsity get together to show you what they can do! 45 Wrestling 1971 was the third year for the Husker Grapplers, After a busy year of matches and tournaments, the team ended with a final record of 4--11, At the Braidwood Invita- tional touriklament, the Serena Wrestlers took home a total of one fourth place, two thirds, one second and a championship in the 119-lb. class by Brian Woods, The team finished fourth in the tournament, With the loss of only one senior, Tim Woods, the future for the wres- tling Huskers looks good indeed, Missing: Scott I-Ioxsey 1983, Bill Stechman 11055, and Ken Thompson 11193. jeff Anderson 11325, Lee Hershey 11325 Greg Rabe 1HwtJ, Scott Brooks 11855. But with a great deal of perseverance and hard work, Cleon Fagot, direc- tor, created just that. Part of the choir's busy schedule this year in- cluded the annual Little Ten Con- ference Concert, which was held at Malta, and the Christmas Concert. Also the chorus received superior ratings in both performance and sightreading at the Class C contest at Chenoa. The highlight of the year, though was the F. Melius Christian- sen Festival which was held at Serena in honor of that late composer and conductor, and whose son, Olaf Chris- tiansen, was guest conductor. How- ever, as all else slowed to a halt at the end of the year, Serena's choir worked on to get ready for a spring tour which took them on a week of fun and scheduled singing through Southern Illinois and Northern Ken- tucky. Under the direction of Mr. William Brown, the Serena band had another successful year. From playing pop tunes and the school song at basket- ball games to playing I-lark the Herald Angels Sing at the Christmas Tea, we proved Serena should be proud of its band. This year we also presented a program to the surround- ing grade schools. Later, at contest, everyone was disappointed to have missed a superior by one point. Again some of us band members participated in the solo and ensemble contest and in the Little Ten Festival. Soon it was Memorial Dayg and we band mem- bers, wearing overlays and hats, played together for the last time in the parade at Sheridan. just a pinch of ritard.' ga.. .is IVV? . They sponsored skits before Christmas and other assem- blies throughout the year, Hat Day was a big success along with the Halloween Dance, Members and other students enjoyed themselves while earning money. Freshmen Try Harder From the first Staggering glimpse to the last final exam, high school has been a period of adjustment for es- pecially freshmen. It would be hard to forget the first day when confused freshmen struggled with their lockers and underwent the teasing from up- perclassmen, As the year progressed, Kathryn Beich introduced us to the cold, cruel world of financial plan- ning while soc-hops introduced us to each other.
