Three girls from Ohio--Hilda, Irene, and jenny-- arrive in New York eager to begin new careers. Long on hope and short on money, the girls are forced to rent a gloomy apartment from a money-hungry land- lady named Mrs. Malone. But not only is the apart- ment gloomy--it has a mysterious closet which is frequently visited by shadowy figures. Strange neigh- bors add to the excitement--particularly Mr. Rose- water, a modern poet whose upstairs apartment is filled with clanking, clattering, and banging. The first night in the apartment is a terrifying experience, but the girls manage to survive. Jenny, however, is so sorried that she hires a burly taxi-driver named Her- cules to be their bodyguard. And Irene's fiance George insists that he, too, will stay in the apartment to protect the girls. At first, Hercules's brawn and George's brain seem certain to clash. Suspicious Mrs. Malone finally calls in Officer Sweeney, but he really isn't needed. For with Hercules's strength and George's wit, the mystery of the closet is solved and the culprits are caught. At last the girls from Ohio can live in peace in their New York apartment. Don't flinch, Brenda. IO
