Three girls from Ohio--Hilda, Irene, and jenny-- arrive in New York eager to begin new careers. Long on hope and short on money, the girls are forced to rent a gloomy apartment from a money-hungry land- lady named Mrs. Malone. But not only is the apart- ment gloomy--it has a mysterious closet which is frequently visited by shadowy figures. Strange neigh- bors add to the excitement--particularly Mr. Rose- water, a modern poet whose upstairs apartment is filled with clanking, clattering, and banging. The first night in the apartment is a terrifying experience, but the girls manage to survive. Jenny, however, is so sorried that she hires a burly taxi-driver named Her- cules to be their bodyguard. And Irene's fiance George insists that he, too, will stay in the apartment to protect the girls. At first, Hercules's brawn and George's brain seem certain to clash. Suspicious Mrs. Malone finally calls in Officer Sweeney, but he really isn't needed. For with Hercules's strength and George's wit, the mystery of the closet is solved and the culprits are caught. At last the girls from Ohio can live in peace in their New York apartment. Don't flinch, Brenda. IO Uhh--let me at 'im. Excedrin headache No. '71 -xf -- I sv R It's got to be here someplace! Injuries hampered Mick Pfau and Frank Hershey while Larry Foreman suffered a pre-season broken ankle. Steve Pitstick and Frank Hershey led the team with records of 18--2 and 12--2, respectively. Bill Stechman, Steve Pitstick, and Mark Matson each took first place in their classes at the Braidwood Tournament. Serena can look forward to good years ahead with freshmen Scott Hoxsey, David Rohrer, Ken Thompson, and Bill Hardy, and sopho- mores Iohn Miner and Mike Marshall, along with regu- lars Bill Stechman, Mick Pfau, and Lee Hershey. Freshmen Mike Barrels, Paul Fin- ley, and Mark Allen and sophomores Greg Hitchins, jim Blanton, and jerry Huss saw action on the courts for most of the season. Gaining experience, the team showed much improvement during the second half of the year. In addition, the freshman team--paced by Finley, Bartels, Allen, Brad Bristol, Scott Shockley, and Dave Skelton--finished the year with an eleven and four mark. So prospects for the coming 1970-71 season look bright for the JV's. And this is basketball? Help, not him again! Q, Q my 5 iw SQA 5 Z K 'TW' . If Plagued by lack of experience, the Serena Huskers var- sity team spent the 1969-70 season rebuilding. They finished the year with a disappointing record of four wins and twenty lossesg but Coach Gene Salmlons, in his first year at Serena, found several promising underclassmen who should make future seasons exciting. Freshmen Mike Bartels and Paul Finley saw action as substitutes on the varsity team, and Rick Battles, a sophomore, was a reg- ular on the starting five. These players, together with juniors jerry McLachlan, Bill Matison, Kim Nelson, Mark Wright, Dave Stafford, and Darrell Thompson, should make the 1970-71 season an interesting one. Q .??'P ' fi UCDGDECRCEASSCTDECD Lord, what fools these mortals be. Shakespeare Freshmen Enjoy First Year at SHS Stumbling into class five minutes late, obeying the orders of the upperclassmen, giggling about that cute senior boy in study hall--all are part of the freshman year. Of course, the class of '73 was no exception. Eighty-seven freshmen walked through the doors of Serena High School in August to meet many new people and have many new experiences. High school was a little frightening at first--so much homework, so many new faces. But the new friends and activities made it all seem worthwhile. The end of the year came quickly and found the freshmen well adjusted to life in high school. Class-sponsored activities in- cluded bake sales and a coat check. That first ex- perience behind the wheel of the driver education car was a highlight of the year for many of the sophomores. Seatbelts, shoulder harnesses, stop signs, and icy roads--but somehow Mr. Ziegler and his students managed to survive. Class rings were another highlight of the year for the class of '72. The students chose the style and colors in September and waited anxiously until November when they were delivered. During the year, a pizza day and bake sales added funds to the class treasury. The junior year was a busy for the class of '71, Students participated in money-making projects and joined committees, all in anticipation of the annual junior-Senior Prom in May. As usual, the treasury seemed short of funds when the year began. Frustrated seniors wondered if there would really be a prom at all. But as usual, the treasury grew and the prom was a success. The first three years at SHS passed quickly for the junior class. With only their senior year left, the juniors could al- ready look forward to their future after high school. jerry McLachlan, Vice-Pres., jane Tirevold, Trees., Tim Woods, Pres.g Vicky Mason, Sec. 78 Wayne Anderson Dave Bardson Marge Barnwell David Baugher Maryann Bennington Colleen Berggren Kathy Bernard Becky Billings He len Bozarth Brenda Brown Roger Brue Dale Bub litz Phyllis Decker Merry Eddy Linda Frisch Mike Goodman Linda Graffius Terry Grunstad Lori Haff Dave Hall Greg Hanley Julie Hanley Kenneth Hayes Debbie Hicks Mark Higdon Eugene Hill Pat Hoxsey Eleanor Huss Janeen Johnson Marcia johnson Paul Jonassen Ruth Larsen Joann Larson Vicki Marshall Roy Mason Vicky Mason Bill Matison Terrie Matson Jerry McLachlan jeff Milligan Jim Monahan Susan Morahn Gary Morel Ron Morris Meta Muffler Jerry Muncy Emily Nelson I l Not pictured--Pam Fuller Kim Nelson Ruth Nitiss Jim Oakes Kathy Pearson Sherman Raines Cathie Riis Debbie Rockey Mary Rohrer Marcella Russell Ray Scheppler Allan Shambaugh Linda Sheldon Cheryl Shrode Nancy Snow David Stafford Les Staton Darrell Thompson 80 Cheryl Thorson jane Tirevold Kathy Tuntland Marla Twait Rollin Varness Patti Vermeland Monty Walters Bob Wawerski Linda Weakley Kent Wiley Tom Williamson Brenda Wing Tim Woods Mark Wright Charla Zombres Browsing in the library X . . . All done. Finished. The classes, the Prom, the tests, the good times-all are done. Even if l can't remember the day the Versailles Treaty was signed or how to find the length of the third side of the triangle, l'll always have memories. All the kids I knew-my friends, and those who weren't so friendly-all are in my memory. The greatest part of all was being a senior, having Senior Privilege Pass, and learning to know and understand people. As the words say in Paul Simon's song, Bridge Over Troubled Water, someone was there to ease my mind. lf there is any tragedy in being a senior, it's that you just now learn to know other people so much better, and then graduation splits you all up. Four years. All done. Finished. Farewell '70- We Have Learned . .. We Have Enjoyed . . . We Are Part of the Future. 104 'F 1 .1 1 3
