In plarning the building those in charge irspected many up-to-date school plants in our state and incorpor- ated the best features of each in our building with a result that we have the most modern small high school in the state. The work was rushed to completion and the building was dedicated on Sunday, August 51, 1941. It was a happy group that assembled on Tuesday morning, Septem- ber 2, to start the first year of school in the new building. The building cost approximately Sl40,000, but in comparing this with other buildings of the same price range, one must consider that our contract was let at the time when labor and materials were at their lowest, and that we therefore have a better-than-average build- ing for the money. Some of the outstanding features of the plant are: All floors are covered with battleship linoleum which decreases the noises and makes it easy on the feet. Special sou d absorbing plaster was used on all the halls and classrooms in an effort to further reduce the noise. Then in the summer of 1943, a cellotex fi- ber board was nailed on to the ceiling of the gymnasium which improved the acoustics many fold and makes it pos- sible to hear and enjoy a play, or a musical number. The oak finish throughout the building is in it- self a credit to the building. Copious laboratories for Physical Science, Agriculture and Home Economics are provided. An unusual feature is the well equipped clinic, where those who are injured or become ill can be taken care of. g The gymnasium, which was built a few years before the fire and did not burn, is the best gym in any of the smaller schools in the state. It has an adequate playing floor, 46 x 78 feet. The seats are constructed so as to give ample knee room, and every square inch of the playing floor can be seen by a spectator from any seat in the bleachers. We wish again to express our appreciation to those who had vision and courage enough to bring forth this, almost ideal school building. Los Angeles, in the year '55. I have just finished my dinner and am preparing to a- muse myself on my last evening in town for several weeks. I decide to visit an old friend, a director for a movie studio. At his office I find he is previewing a picture. His projectionist is none other than Bob Billings who ran our movie machine when he was at Ser- ena High School. His Assistant Director is Jean Osmund who helps tear the script and actors apart and put them together again. My friend gives his instructions and the movie proceeds to unfold. It's a cowboy picture, not one of my favorites, but nevertheless entertaining to millions. The hero, a singing cowboy, is Howard Brue. Imagine living here five years and just now run- ning onto these old school mates. After a pleasant eve ning I bid my friends good-by and inform them of my in- tention of taking the morning plane for Chicago, then to proceed to Kentucky Derby where I plan to see all the races. Arriving at the airport early in the morning I board the plane and see, yes, horrors of all horrors, my pilot and co-pilot. Well my insurance is paid so why should I worry, I try to console myself. To have Harold Pearson and Don Tuftie piloting you is like ask- ing for a roller coaster ride without having any inten tion of hanging on. But to my surprise I find them quite capable and enjoy a smooth trip. Arriving in the nwindy Cityn I decide to take a taxi to my destination, a restaurant where previous ex- perience has shown me the food is delicious. En route we pass an enormous courthouse where according to the papers, the most interesting and talented lawyers are pleading for their clients. The crowd is just leaving and who should I see descending the steps but Mary Hub- bartt, with a large ,impressive brief case tucked under her arm. Here I am. Food at last. Say, isn't that the most wonderful boogie woogie muscle you've ever heard I'm so anxious to see the artist who is creating this music, that I almost trip over the waiter's heels. I recognize the pianist, Fern Jacobson, she always did have a way of making a piano talk her language. ! ? The fates have caught up with me, for there are no tables. But wait, the days of chivalry are not gone, this couple-ask me to sit with them. At a glance I see none other than Darlene Twait and Louis Yoesle. On in- quiring into their modes of work and life, I find that Darlene is the private secretary of the famous dentist, Drake. I bet the pain-racked patients appreciate hav- ing Darlene around to aid and comfort them. Louis has devoted his life to being a correspond- ent and he is here today to cover the trial I have men- tioned. He is just relaxing after a hard day's work. After a delightful lu ch I leave the restaurant to take in a radio show before I go back to the hotel to dress for dinner. Arriving' at the studio, I choose a seat 'well up front and settle myself to enjoy an hour's entertain- ment. ON THE AIR, and I see Frank Dolder's face in the control room. You know he did have a flair for radios back in the school days, even. nLet me introduce the famous cook whom we have night. She will reveal a she owns, Meridith Ellis. our Home Bc. days when she member in the kitchen. the pleasure of hearing to- few of the priceless recipes Thinking back, I remember was about the most efficient And now a dramatic reading from the well known dramatist, Eloise Thompson. I find she does very well. I also remember that she did very well with one of the leading roles in our Junior Play. After seeing several other performers, I leaks and go back to my hotel to prepare for dinner. I decide to walk since it is not far to the club' which I plan to visit. I am about half way there when I see a large im pressive car pull to the curb. A well dressed woman and a man who appears to be her'husband emerge. She is Donna Osmund and I can only guess who that tall lank guy is-with her. The sign on the car reads, nSpee1a1 Agriculture Investigatoru, well. I am greeted at the door since I wired the owner, Mildred Ferguson, of my arrival so I could be sure of a table this time. As I reach the table, she informs me I am just in time for the feature program of the night, the famed dancer and her brother: Patricia Stafford and Roland. She and Roland have earned some well-deserved praise, Y After an enjoyable evening I return to my hotel and on waking the next morning I decide I shall have my breakfast in bed. Glancing through the papers, a pic- ture with large headlines draws my attention. 'Zany In ventor Win Jackpot Again.n The picture reveals Ralph Helgeson. This takes me back to the days when he and Harold used to work up buggy sleds and Heliocopters. It seems it's been quite profitable to pursue this tal- ent. After breakfast I feel the need of some fresh air and, taking the better residential section, I amble aim lessly looking at every building I pass, just like a Yokel. Wait, what's this? Krug's Little Skipper School. Curiously I walk up the steps. A cordial sec- retary greets me and on my inquiry as to the owner points out an office down the corridor. The door opens and my suspicions are confirmed when I see Mary Jane Krug. So this is what you were working up to when you took care of those nieces of yours back in the school days. My time being limited, I hurry to the depot and board the train for Kentucky. It won't be long now, so I settle back to enjoy the ride. A lady across the aisle attracts my attention. She is slim and carries a brief case with nThe Stylern written across it. She must be a buyer for some big New York store going to the style show in Texas. As she turns around I recog- nize her as Mary Lou McCormick. Arriving in Kentucky, I go immediately to my hotel The next afternoon I find myself an excited spectator at the races. One of the first surprises I receive is to find Myron Sampson and Bob Bastian have each entered one of their best racers. Scanning the crowd before the start of the race, I see a navy man and his wife seated in the box to my right. That girl is the image of Evelyn Ryghl Closer inspection proved it is she. This is the best race I have seen for a long time, and ly2on's horse comes in first by a nose. The wafe of the owner will have the honor of placing the horse-shoe of flowers about the filly's neck. As I already had guessed and been proven right, she is Lois Madden. I suppose at times throughout this tale you have wondered who the author might be, and now at the con- clusion I shall enlighten you. We had been in high school about a month when we were asked if we wanted to join the F. F. A. After meeting the requirements for becoming Grcenhands, we were initiated. The formal initiation wasn't bad--but! oh boy!!! the informal. Well, next year, we'll get to work on the freshmen so I guess it was worth it. We have studied much about livestock this year. We are experts on dairy cows, beef cattle, hogs, sheep and poultry. One of our class members has the largest sheep project in school--Dick Marshall has thirty ewes. He owns them in partnership with his brother Bill, and both of them are turning out to be first class sheep shearers, also. ' For awhile we did some shop work such as rope work forge work and soldering. We oouldn't get any lumber for building so we will save our construction jobs for another'year. We also studied about crops and soils, soil test- ing, gardening, and various other things. Several of us entered the swine and dairy judging contests sponsored by two of the magazines we have in our magazine rack. We don't expect to win any prizes but it was interesting and fun judging the pictures and sending in our entries. We also had a number of sound motion pictures and film strips throughout the year. ! MW About the middle of October twenty-eight boys re- ported to Coach Shaffer for basketball practice. This year's team was built arou d two seniors, Louis Yoesle and Bob Bastian. With very little experience and also the lack of physical qualities which the team of 1943- 44 had, the squad went about preparing itself for the 1944-45 season. After beating Leland in the opening game the team went into a tail spin and lost four games in a row before beating Earlville in an overtime 53-31. The lack of experience was evident in many of the games that were lost because the opponents profited by the mistakes the Cornhuskers made. The Little Ten Tournament was held at Plano where the Cornhuskers met Waterman and was eliminated in the first round. The tournament was won by Somonauk, with Waterman coming into the runner-up position. The District Tournament was held at Serena for the eighth consecutive year. We met Minooka and were de- feated. Again Somonauk won the tournament with Minooka second. . The following fellows made up the 1944-45 squad: Two seniors, Louis Yoesle--captain, Robert Bastian: six juniors, Bill Marshall, Donald Riveland, Merle Stange- land, Wilbur Lee Ogden, Darrell Moe, and Russell Miller six sophomores, Wayne Arntzen, Myron Miller, Richard Buckingham, Joey Roth, Jack Nelson, and Jerry Nelson, eight freshmen, Lee Dondanville, Vincent Breuer, Dick Marshall, Robert Ashoff, Gordon Duffy, Dale Kember, Don Reese, and Doyle Jelm. The 1945-46 team equipped with experience should be a harder aggregation to beat than this yearfs team. The shooting ability of Louis Yoesle and guarding and floor play of Bob Bastian will however be sorely missed l 9 Leland Paw Paw Marseilles Somonauk Plano Earlville Shnbbona Newark Leland Earlville Newark Oswego Hinckley Rollo Waterman Waterman Newark Sandwich Oswego Yorkville Minooka PLAYER L. Several games were lost in the last minute. Outside of three juniors, the squad was made up of sophomores and freshmen. Only four games were won dur- ing the season. With more experience the squad should be a good asset to the next year's varsity. The war has temporarily put a stop to spring and fall sports. However next fall Serena may again play softball. It is a good idea to have some activity in the fall to keep the interest alive in athletics. Hlghlights of this year's basketball seasong Many games even lost were evenly contested. 2 Nine cheerleaders dressed in the colors of the school leading the school in organized cheers. The re- sponse of the students to their leaders this year was the best in the last three. Those who performed so well as cheerleaders this year are: Shirley Rosendahl fs yrs.J, Maxine Haeffele K2 yrs.J, Rita Pool C2 yrs.J, Marzetta Whitlock fl yr.J, Marilyn Clark, Cl yr.D, Joann Rohrer Cl yr.7, Aileen Ashoff C1 yr.J, Barbara Muffler Cl yr., and Alice Newtson Cl yr.D. Also a banquet to their sponsor, Miss Hay. This year's community following was excellent even with a losing team. This proves that the Serena commu- nity like their basketball and that whether losing or winning it is interesting entertainment, also that there is value gained for competitive seorts that can- not be gained anywhere else. There was an unusually large number ef freshmen out for basketball which should speak well for a win- ning team for several years when this group are juniors and seniors. One for the books!! Our coach this year did not receive a technical foul for trying to help the offi- cials officiate the basketball game, but it wasn't be cause he wasn't working just as hard as the team. In fact in several cases if the team would have worked as hard as Shaffer they would have wen. The love bug hit several of the team members bo- fore the year was over. This might of hindered or help ed their efficiency. That is a matter of opinion. , in , :J 'Fl ff--i wf' ' 'zgf A air 'fl 5: ,Ui-:' inf' .fl L. They are Marilyn Clark, Shirley Iverson, Maxine Haeffele, Bar- bara Nelson, and lee Dondanville. We started climbing the ladder toward being suc- cessful librarians by learning the simple task of check ing books and magazines in and out. Certain periods were assigned to each of us to sit at the librarian's table and do this. The second rung of the ladder was reached by straightening the books on the shelves Chow do they get so mixed up?J Next we were taught how to find books easily by the use of the card catalog. The fourth and top rung was reached by learning how to pre- pare new books for the shelves. The most difficult part of this is looking them up in the Cuttor's Guido and classifying the books by the Dewey Decimal System. At the end of the school term we will receive one- half a credit if we havon't gone back down the ladder and wc certainly can't forget what we learned that easily. STUDENT SECRETARIES Last fall eight Typing II girls were assigned :to act as secretaries during the school term. These girls typed most of the tests throughout the year. They have learned to cut stencils, run the mimeo- graph, make ditto carbon copies, and to be faithful to their employer, by not revealing the secrets of the business. The girls have also learned to make the best use of their time and to plan their work so that they can get the most accomplished in the time they are here at school. Recognition is given to them through extra- crcdit in their Typing II marks. This course was Chemistry. The school had been preparing for this course for some time. A complete stock of chemicals and equipment were ordered. When we signed up for our courses last spring, fif- teen registered for Chemistry. This year when school started there were twenty four in the class. Because of insufficient equipment, we had to out the class down to twenty. Since then, one member, Bob Billings, who joined the Navy, has left our class. This course has proved to be very interesting, as well as difficult. The whole school is generally inter- ested in finding out what the strange odors are that come streaming out of the classroom after our labora- tory period. We have four laboratory periods and three class periods a week. In our laboratory, we are using semi-micro methods, that is, we perform our experiments on a small scale. We work in two's, each couple having their own laboratory equipment and their own supply of chemicals. Some of thc things we have done in Chemistry are: made glass stirring rods and medicine droppers, learned the basis of various magic tricks, learned the proper- ties of acids, bases, and salts and how to prepare them, and prepared various gases to use in our experiments. Some of these gases were: oxygen, chlorine, ammonia, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. We also made fire extinguishers, guncotton, and smelling salts. In our class periods we have been studying and learning how to write formulas, which is the chemical short-hand for chemical compounds. We have had quite a few interesting movies which help explain the lessons. All in all, Chemistry has proved very interesting and instructive to the class. If we aren't cooking, we are sewing. We specialized in breakfasts, learned how to make muffins, chocolate pancakes, and souffle. We also learned how to make the best omelet you've ever seen. I can see it now, but on with my story. We have long since finished our adventures in foods, but new we are getting ac- quainted with a needle and thread. It's a lot of fun, but when you have to use a thimble, Oh, Boy!!! We are making various things, such as, shorts, skirts, blouses and dresses. HOME ECOVOKICS CLUB The Home Economics Club is a new organization this year. Our aim is to develop personality, leadership, initiative and social poise among the girls in school. This year has included club-sponsored tea dances, a basketball banquet, Red Cross activities, and a couple of interesting speakers. As the club becomes older, the Home Economics girls expect the organization to bring the student body closer together by offering its services whenever needed. State affiliation is an- other boost for such a club. With this affiliation comes the required program for the year. with spring coming, the program will include a fashion show and a Mother-Daughter banquet.
