To frown, to cry, to grin or smile with joy was impossible; the mask hid any of these special, unique expressions. It covered up the human weakness of tears or a face contorted in pain. Girls Cross Country Although this year ' s girl ' s cross country- team did not win any of its meets, its rec- ord was one of the most successful in the history of girls cross country at Sentinel. The 1972 team was composed of one jun- ior, four sophomores and five freshmen, making the prospect of future winning seasons very probable. One of the bright spots on the team was Susie Deden, a sophomore, who finished in the top ten in almost every meet. Through her leader- ship, the team placed a respectable sixth at the state meet. At the start of the year Mr. Johnson hoped the Sentinel runners could finish fifth in the state meet. But because of a season of hard work and determination, the team finished a surprising third in the state finals at Helena on October 28. The top runners on the squad were seniors Jim Walker, who showed fine leadership as team captain, John Wallis and Tim Ibey. Three sophomores and one junior, none of whom had experienced any varsity competition before, rounded out the 1972 team. In addition to the fine finish at state, the sea- son ' s highlights include the contributoins of the sophomore runners, especially that of Keith Messmer. Track and field includes a series of com- petitive events that make up one of the oldest of all sports. They comprise running for speed, jumping for height or distance, and throwing for distance, activities vital to ancient man for survival. The sprinters who dash headlong pro- vide the close finishes. The hurdlers, combining speed and grace, add precision and beauty to the sport. The milers, beginning with easy strides, furnish lung-bursting, heart-pounding final efforts as they strain to hit the tape. The field events, too, high and broad jumps, javelin and pole vault and shot-put, add to the spec- tacle. These events make up the most universal and most important sport internationally. Yet it is conducted almost exclusively on an ama- teur basis. So it is at Sentinel, where track is an important part of the spring school season. Studehts often see the track members jogging about in the warm sunlight on a spring after- noon, as Coach George Scott puts his team through after school workouts. The individuals on the team work hard, seldcmly receiving their just recognition, to build their physical abilities to the peak needed to win. Like every other high school body in the land last fall, Sentinel fans coveted a state football cham- pionship. But with only ten returning lettermen, the Spart ans ' chances of bringing home the Montana crown appeared doubtful. Yet in Sentinel ' s first home game against Billings Senior on September 22, a pattern formed that was to lead Sentinel to its best football record in the school ' s history, 10-1. Bryan Flaig, a senior end, caught a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Tim Kerr, and the duo began a romp that would end when be- tween them the two had set five AA passing and receiving records. Throughout the season Kerr showed gutsy spirit when on third down and long yardage he would fling the ball to Flaig. And Bryan, with his height, speed and invaluable hands, would grab the ball, outmaneuver his de- fenders and run for a touchdown or first down yardage. During the first half of the season the pair, both first team members of the Montana Coaches Association Class AA All-State Football Team, kept their team winning when the Spartans were suffering with a weak running attack. Coach Gene Leonard, the Montana high school coach of the year, alternated his offensive runners until mid- v ay through the season when he established a backfield with Dirk Visser at halfback and Bill Sheppard at fullback. With their talented efforts, the Sentinel crew now had an unrivalled varied offense in the state. Defensively the Spartans, with strong points Bob Vogel at tackle, Stan Zachariasen at linebacker and Steve Yurich at defensive back, all first team selec- tions of the Montana Coaches Association Class AA All-State Football Team, more than adequately battled their opponents, recovering 20 fumbles and grabbing 22 interceptions. Together with the offense they had compiled a record of 6-0 heading into the game with the 1971 football champions, the Great Falls Bisons. This game was prematurely billed as the 1972 championship game with the Spartans, the finesse team of the year, against the Bison, the power team of the season. The size and strength of the Bison proved to be too much for the Spartans to best, and Sentinel lost the game 30-15. Many thought the Spartans chances for a state title in football had been destroyed. But the team beat their remaining opponents, including their cross town rivals the Hellgate Knights. Ending their regular season with a 9-1 record, the Spartans waited and hoped to get another crack at the Bisons. The chance came when Butte Public, a team the Spartans had whipped 44-20 earlier in the season, beat Great Falls Public 17-15 in a night game. This set up the 1972 A A State Football Championship in Missoula on November 18. From the start of the game the superiority of the Kerr to Flaig pass against the Bison running game was clear. On the Spartans fifth play from scrimmage, Kerr fired a 32 yard scoring bomb to Flaig and the Sentinel Spartans were on their way to the school ' s first sole football championship (Sentinel shared th etitle in 1966 with Great Falls Public). Kerr and Flaig connected for two more touchdowns and Sheppard ran for a fourth. The much publicized running game of the Bisons never got started as the Spartan defensive unit held Great Falls to only 16 points. At the end of the game the score was 29-16 and a happy crowd of Sentinel fans raced onto the field to embrace their 1972 football champions 1972 AA Football Champions ife VARSITY FOOTBALL— Front Row: I. The Class AA Champions at State The Sentinel Spartans again proved to be the moB- ters of Montana high school basketball this year by winning the Qass AA Cliampionship for the second straight time. Returning with exceptional depth and experience, the Spartans formed an unparalleled team whose 25-1 season was topped off by a 76 3 VAin over the Hellgote Knights in the title game. Individualism may not be the key to a successful athletic team, but it was the combination of individual efforts that made the Spartan team a winner. The Spar- tans ran an awesome fast-break that often fourid Bryan Flaig, Kirk Rocheleau and Ben DeMers feeding the ball to one another for a quick and seemingly easy two points. Yet it was more than their smoothness and co- operation on layups that made the Spartans winners. It was the great outside shooting of guards Kirk Rodi- eleau and Ben DeMers. It was the superior rebounding and turn around jump shooting of center Steve DeMers and forward Joe DeMarois. And almost always it was. forward Bryan Flaig ' s ability to pull the team together when they faltered with brilliant assists and game as- surance points. And perhaps more than any other qual- ity that made the Spartans champions, was their bench strength. Coach Bob Luoma never had a set starting five and usually picked his first team from seven play- ers. This periodically left Dan Mitchell and Mike Morris as reserves. Both fine players, they were able to relieve other starters without the Spartans losing any of their scoring punch. The Spartans also received strong late game performances from benchers Roger Nelson, Jeff Howard, Tim Morris, M ' ke Dcerfler and Mark Weston. But basketball is not all offense. Combining their individual talents. Coach Luoma molded his boys into an excellent defensive unit that held Kalispell to only 32 and 35 points in their two meetings ■ ' Anth the Braves. The Spartans only loss this season was to the Great Falls Bison, 69-61. This was the first game of the year the Spartans played without Ben DeMers who dis- located his hip in the Great Falls Russell game. Be- cause of his injury, Ben missed the middle port of the season. But the loss to Great Falls became meaningless to both the Spartan team and fans alike when seniors Dan Mitchell and Ben DeMers cut down the nets at the UM Field. But in o rder for a wrestler and his team to win, they must also have a keen knowledge of the sport. But knowledge is not innate and at Sentinel this special wisdom used by the Spartan wrestlers is obtained from the teachings of Head Coach Jug Beck. And this year Jug did an exceptional job of making his message clear to his boys. The Spartan grapplers completed their regular season with an 11-1 record, losing only to Kalispell in their first meeting with the Braves. But the squad never let down after this defeat and when the two teams met again a month later coach Jug Beck ' s boys beat Kalispell 27-22 in a close match. This was a crucial win for the team in their pursuit to bring the State Class AA Wrestling Championship back to Sentinel. The Spartans overwhelmed the Knights this year sweeping the series from Hellgate with scores of 48-9 in their first meet- ing and 35-15 in the second. This year ' s squad was strong in every weight class from 98- pound Pete Karr right on up through heavyweight Bruce Polette. With each man on the team overpowering his opponent, it is hard to single out an exceptoinal performer. But by both com- piling undefeated seasons, John Mecham and Don Tripp set the standard of perfection for the entire team. John Mecham, a transfer from Seeley-Swan, added his own electricity to the Spartans cause by breaking the state record for most consecu- tive wins. Gymnastics is unique in the field oi sports because it is not only a grueling athletic event, but also a beautiful art form. Combining a distinct blend of physical beauty and athletic coordination and strength, a gymnastic com- petitor must display intense concentration and numerous skills when performing. Through the fine direction of Coach Mike Johnson, Sentinel ' s boys ' gymnastic team pre- sented first-rate performances in their meets this year. Pete Nauditt, Sentinel ' s top all-around man, worked superb exercises throughout the season winning the parallel bars in the Big Ten meet. Nauditt was backed up by standout Mark Parks, who finished first in the high bar competition against Kalispell and Hellgate. Helping to balance the team were Doug Pet- erson, a specialist in the floor exercise, Paul Shook, working the sidehorse, Martin Lude- mann, excelling in the vault, and Denny Allen who regularly placed with his sidehorse and ring routines. A good all-around high school gymnast needs the grace of a ballerina, the physical strength of a long distance swimmer, the concentration of a chess player, and the ver- satility of a decathlon champion. It is hard to find a gymnast with these qualities, but not impossible. Sentinel ' s Misty Lehman is such a gymnast. Misty performed master- fully this season winning all-around cham- pionships in both the Helena and Missoula triangulars. Though it may have seemed so at tim.es this season, Misty was not a one-girl team. Her Coach Pam Kees did an excellent job of developing her girls ' talent, including thai of Kim Canaris, a fine balance beam per- former. mwiMami —IiIIMIuiiimi - mm mmm F  «■  ■ V i««Twr 3ui w?aagwii— iwiiiiiiiw MHU. tuwia Golf leant en. ' Alter four years of it at Sentinel, I cannot say what education is; I con, however, say what it is not. It is not mimeographed hand-outs, nor prepared ' pack- ets. ' It is not textbooks, nor is it even teachers. To know what education is you have to want it enough, and to get education you have to be willing to do it yourself. In all the classes I ' ve been in, I have never learned unless I wanted to. So, after four years of it, I can only say this: you can not get education through a passive reception of it from teachers and all their para- phernalia, the effort has to come from yourself. Will Roscoe Gaylen Baumbergcr Mark Gasser Penny Haglund Lcnira K]awitter Classes Addenda ■Bear W lim Williamson Service Service is learning what it is like to get your hands dirty. It ' s planning and executing a mar- athon basketball game, and then looking at your feet alterwards. It ' s selling tickets and pop lor your organization ' s dance; it ' s then selling tickets and pop at other dances just because you are experienced. It ' s being able to be called a jock. It ' s working on an ecology trail, and it ' s changing the schedule boards and the marquee. Service is saying that you thought it was all worthwhile — alter you have finally finished a project. Honors Honors in high school is something you may or may not core for during yoiu four years of high school. High School is a chance to get a look at yourself, and to find out what field you would like to go in to, and what your interest in life may be. If you want to do something in life really bad, these honors help you strive even harder and stronger than you might have. If honor is your thing to look for in high school, then strive and work for that honor and you will find a better and more satisfied person within yourselL Mike McKenzie ,. ' ; - ml |f- Jx wMi ! To get here he had to take three tests and fill out two applications, answering hundreds of questions about himself, his family, and the United States. Although he had many misgivings about at- tending an American capitalistic and imperialistic school, his worries were not justified. He adjusted to Sentinel quickly, meeting many friendly teach- ers and students. His first friends in Missoula were the Ponds, whom he stayed with while going to Sentinel. The Ponds, Jorge said, are excellent people. During his stay in Missoula, Jorge was actively involved in Key Club, Spanish Club, and the Montana Histor y Club. He also lost his voice at school games, went to dances, and served as vice president of a church group. Looking back at his year at Sentinel, Jorge said, I thank you all very much for all that you have done for me. I want to go back to my coun- try of course, but it gives me great pain to leave this school and it was a great honor to be a Spartan. Tom Anderson takes notes on Jorge ' s story about life in Argentina. Jorge quenches his thirst with a coke at one of the local drive-ins. «fl H bf b;eM U -• cc ULHt -?t : V J AFS student Suzy Kappes points out whore she spent ten weeks last summer. She was apprehensive at first about living there but found that life in Malaysia was very interesting. Social customs, she found, were very differ- ent, as people do not start dating until they are about twenty years old. School life was also strange to Suzy because students there must wear uniforms and attend nine classes. They spend each period taking lectiire notes. Suzy said that although Malaysia is a de- mocracy, freedom of speech is often limited. Long hair is banned and many books cannot be sold. Dresses there are longer and no one wears shorts. Suzy added that although she was homesick at first, she could hcr ' ' e stayed another month easily. It was hard to leave, but it was really, really nice to get back hom.e. Being a friend — a real friend, one who shares, is honest and sincere. Not sitting in judgment. Not forcing morals and values and yet being concerned about them. Watching a young person grow and develop. Watching him set positive goals and then achieve them. Seeing him tackle his problems with deter- mination to make himself a better person. Knowing that in some way, however minor, you ha ' .e been port of it. That helpless feeling. Knowing that being a friend and caring aren ' t enough but not knowing what is. Not being able to change an impossible situ- ation. Watching a young man or woman give up and resign themselves to a life of un- hoppiness. The possibility that you may have some posi- tive influence on just one troubled indi- vidual. Reaching their goal when words are said like: Thanks, I really appreciate you. When at last Ihey are gone, all that is lelt are remnants of white paint, grease and new dread (Cindy Clark) ' Ai last the law of the mask was removed. But the people had forgotten how it was to express them- selves with their laces. They de their own masks to wear then, for they lelt naked and Irighlened of their bare faces. ' We can see the beauty of the free, unin- hibited face, twisting naturally and easily mto a smile, a look of affection, frown of dis- appointment, joy of victory, pain of defeat and the bright look to the future. With these expressions, highlights of the 1973 school year have been recorded. , y)- -vv t- : .A. SENTINEL H I C: fl In MU t.s t 4lJ H| r)v( ' jou )«iM tL .1-:. i):( R ' 3 y w); I ' .h.
