In 1908 Missoula Built a High School for the Future... Although Missoula has offered high school classes to its students since 1884, the Missoula County High School system was first created, and a central unit on Higgins Avenue constructed, in 1908. Today the friendly and dignified school with its wide halls and arched portals occupies an entire block and has a capacity for 1550 students. Maples, transforming the autumn sidewalks into leaf-strewn lanes, encircle a building which has seen many wings and an annex added during the past 56 years. In 1931 fire destroyed all but the brick walls. The rebuilt school plus a large east wing attached in 1942 sufficed until 1956, and since then the building has worked with the new unit on South Avenue as one school. Next year the Higgins school will once again function independently, with new traditions, new colei's — scarlet and gold — and a new name — Hellgatc High. 3
