School Split Broadens Duties of Hellgate Administration Mrs. Lemon, left, handles student funds. This includes the lunch funds, train trip money, student council, library, periodicals, and class funds. Mrs. Schultz is responsible for records, bulletins, and correspondence. Mr. Jennings believes the school split will develop a healthy school spirit and well-organized unit. Hellgate has more clubs and organizations this year because of the split.” This, in addition to the expanding faculty and facilities, has increased his administrative duties. 25

Various purchases were made during the year to prepare for complete school division. Chemistry equipment and texts were provided. Typewriters and typing tables were bought for business education. Hellgate band classes ordered new band uniforms and instruments too expensive for students to buy. Welding and metal craft, two new classes, needed shop equipment. A larger freshman class and new subjects necessitated twelve new teachers in a variety of fields. Freedom of expression through music is the most difficult thing to teach, states Mr. Neil Dahlstrom, music department head. The Chevaliers, a mixed chorus, and the Chansonettes, a girls' chorus, both newly-formed groups at Hellgate, were organized and directed by Mr. Dahlstrom. Hellgate Librarian Margaret Frette works with the students six periods a day as well as selecting and ordering library books and magazines. Mr. George Gogas, Open House chairman, discusses art principles with an interested parent. He teaches fine arts, advises the yearbook staff, and heads the art department. His history of art class is new to Hellgate. 27
