— CUiL The art department was organized in 1913 in conjunction with the Home Economics department. Today the two departments are separate and each one has a staff of three. The department, headed by Carl Hager, offers such courses as fine arts, crafts, and commercial art. Next year a course in photography will be offered to second-year commercial art students. Many varied projects are undertaken by Art 8 students. Carl Hager Maxine Blackmer Aaron Schenck Art students carve soap into interesting figures. 22

One. two . . . one. two . . . one, two. (phyAical fcducaiioYL Cuddle up a little closer. Girls demonstrate fine points of basketball to male spectators. Most students are unaware of the difficulties which the faculty has undergone to maintain the physical education department. It was always the first to be disbanded, and not until 1927 was it permanently established. The physical education course consists of volleyball, badminton, ping pong, baseball and trampoline lessons. Before Christmas the boys and girls classes combine for dancing lessons. Special classes include tumbling, twirling, and adaptive physical education. The department chairman is Don Delaney.

Helping the school to function more efficiently are the office personnel. Included on the staff are: Jane Herman, main office secretary; Mrs. Mildred Huff, Mr. Beary's secretary; Mrs. Joyce McDonald, Higgins Avenue school secretary; Mrs. Helen Laurie, business manager; Mrs. Ruth Peterson, assistant business manager; Mrs. Alyce Figg, nurse; Tekla Bekkedal, librarian; and Mrs. Helen Vehrs, librarian. 23 Carol Spaulding and Caron Bochman work in the main office during sixth period. Students enjoy the library in the South Avenue High School.
