fommoAual From one teacher in one room in 1913, the commercial department has grown to its present size with a faculty of six teachers and a number of rooms. Typing, shorthand, clerical practice, bookkeeping, retailing, and general business are the various courses offered in the commercial department. Many advanced typing and shorthand students have part-time jobs in downtown business firms. Retailing students also take part in this work program, which is under the supervision of Walter Griffin, department chairman. An alert bookkeeping class absorbs facts and figures. World History students learn how the earth began. Agnes Brown E. J. Buzzelti Barbara Greenwood Arthur Hightower Royal Morrison Lou Rocheleau Ralph Soroos Eugene Thompson Robert Watt C. B. Worthen SociaL Studi A, Mr. Watt lectures on Social Studies to his captivated class. Since two years of social studies including American History are required for graduation, the MCHS social studies department offers a variety of courses for students. Social studies was first offered to MCHS students in 1906. The department was formed in 1917. From that time the department has grown to its present size with branches in both schools. Freshmen may take social studies which is a general citizenship course. World History is offered to sophomores and a one semester course in geography is open to sophomores and juniors. Contemporary problems, a course concerned with present day social and economic problems, is offered to seniors. One of the projects in these classes was to hold a mock national election for the students in the fall. Miss Agnes L. Brown is the chairman of the department. A kindergarten for pre-school age children is conducted each year. The regular classes provide beginning and advanced work in cooking, sewing, and home planning. The department is headed by Mrs. Gladys Van Vorous. Ann Kolppa, senior, home ec student, serves at the faculty tea. Fresh whip up mud pies.
