T. Boone I Cant Afford the Coffee STUDENTS: What should FREEDOM mean to all American Youth? Freedom means that man is free to think, believe, speak, and join his fellow man is assembly. However, to be truly free, man must also act—and, being a social being, that action must be humane and responsible. All too frequently to youth, freedom has been identified only with the mere casting off of restraints. I do not need to labor the point that, given the appropriate climate of high school experience, and, given the benefit of stimulating exemplification, the high school student should be quick to sense and act upon the precious concept that TO BE A FREE MAN IS PRECISELY TO BE RESPONSIBLE. Hightower There'll lie Some Changes Made HISTORY OF THE BITTER ROOT This year marks the golden anniversary of the Bitter Root. It was first published in 1905 as a literary magazine which came out once a month. In 1905 the high school was located in the Roosevelt school. It was a brand new school at that time, and was called Missoula High School. There were seven teachers and one-hundred-eighty students. The Bitter Root appeared as a literary magazine until 1911. It then became an annual book much like it is now. It was published by the senior class. When the book was first published as an annual, the school was located on the present site. It was built in 1908 and was named Missoula County High School. The book was published in 1913 and then was not published again until 1916 because of World War I. In the fall of 1931 the new south wing was completed. Students entered school eager for work in the new section. On September 15 of that year, the school caught fire and destroyed all parts beyond use. Classes were held at the university, in the grade schools, and in any available space. Despite the hardships, a small Bitter Root was still published. The school was built up again and was completed and ready for use by 1933. This building is the present school with the addition of the east wing which was built in.... In 1937 a regular staff began publishing the yearbook. Up to this time it had been published bythe seniors. The yearbook took a vacation in 1942, 1943, and 1944 because of World War II. The Bitter Root was published again in 1945 and in 1946 the yearbook came out with its first padded cover. 5
