However, much is to be gained by participating in these games. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and valuable experience are gained by these boys to whom goes very little of the credit. Many of the boys on the Bomber squad will become Spartans in a short time. It is good to see that fhere are still a few who will go out and play not for money and such things but play just for the game. Lack of eleven-man teams are the explanation for only a five game schedule. Their schedule this year consisted of the same number of games, however, this year's rec- ord was considerably better than that of last year. The Bombers also had more va- riety in this year's games. This year’s team showed good form and an abundance of spirit on many occasions. It is hoped that these boys will have the same spirit and drive when they become Spartans. Finishing the game with a red hot drive, Spartans opened the '51-'52 season with a bang by decisively defeating the Hamilton Broncs . . It was anyone's game up to the last two minutes but in those last two minutes Spartan speed and clutch shooting put away the victory for Missoula . . . Hamilton played a good game, threatened often ... Tall Bronc Bob Nicol took scoring honors with 18 points . . . The whole Spartan squad showed an initiative on offense which brought many shots, Koon topped the locals with 12 points. Missoula—58 Great Falls Central—26 . . . Turning on the power in the second half sharp Spartans thoroughly trounced a much weaker Great Falls Central cage squad . . . Coach Buzzetti used a two platoon system in the game, playing five seniors in the first and third quarter and four jun- iors and a sophomore in the second and fourth quarters . . . Koon led the Spartans with five field oals and two gift tosses for twelve points . . . very man on the squad scored at least once . . . Missoula—39 Great Falls—38 . . . After trailing almost continuously from the opening whistle, Spartans tripped tall Bisons by a single point in a free-for-all finish ... it was all knotted up at 37 all with time slipping away fast . . . Except for the wild and hectic second quarter, when the lead changed four times, the invaders kept ahead of the Spartans, leading at one time by twelve points . . . the Shaw twins, Gene and Jerry, and Merritt Monson formed the nucleus of the Gallatin attack . . . Gene Shaw led all scorers with 20 points . . . Powell's ball rustling and Koons shooting eye, good for 18 points, kept the Spartans knocking at their door . . . Hooking a close up shot with a minute and a half gone in the second overtime period, Bulldog Center Bob Andrews brought the cage tilt to a screaming finish . . . Both teams played hard, shot for shot basketball, almost every bingo brought a lead change . . . Spartans missed repeated chances to stay in front . . . Both teams hit same number of baskets . . .
