GENIUS? at work? No, if!! 1202 Bikini and lbe Bomb Honoring Problem Solved Ticker to the future 790-797 This was really a great year in Senn's annals. It started off in grand style by the success of the Friday Night Dances sponsored by the P. T. A. Harry Barry and Phil Herman alternated in providing us with dreamy music and a bundle of laffs .... Our dark horse football team sur- prised everybody and garnered third place in the rough North Section and ended the season with that thrilling last minute victory over Schurz . . . the big bang everybody got at the Open House .... Next the Players presented Curse You jack Daltonn and followed it up with American Very Earlyf '... How proud the teachers looked as they strutted down the aisle, heads up high, during the Armistice Day assembly .... Then the shock of the death of our Engineer-Custodian, Mr. Charles E. Dris- coll, who had served Senn for over thirty years. . . . Mr. Magic of Senn chopping off an un- known teacher's head and the oh's and ah's from the audience as it fell .... Then on serv everybody as the Green and White present Senn Goes Back to the Cavef '... The Big Christmas assemblies by the Chorus and Players inspired all .... The smiles that wreathed the faces of the King and Queen of the Holly Hop, l'Happy Jacobson and Karen Engberg. . . . Ethereal music drifted through the halls as the choristers gave their interpretations of favorite carols .... Our seniors fought hard, but couldn't keep up with an aggressive DuSable quintet in the I.I.T .... 6 in review At the great Junior Dance in the boys' gym, Carol Goldberg was crowned queen of the class .... Promotions were in order in january with our principal, Mr. Wilson, topping the list be- cause of his new position as Superintendent of Elementary Schools of District 8 on the South Side .... The upper ten per cent of the jan- uary Graduating Class was honored at a spe- cial assembly .... The big night finally arrived, the Prom was here, and it fulfilled our greatest hopes .... It was one of the most beautiful ever .... The Senior luncheon Yum Yum' was terrific at the Edgewater Beach and we were inspired by Ron Herr's impressive speech. . . . Grease Paint Follies proved to be one of the Players' biggest hits and then remember the election? The Chorus put on another su- perb assembly .... The freezing winter finally passed and it began to get warmer again .... The fellows began to meet their girls and walk them home .... Remember how nice it all looked, and then the big day arrived .... The Forum was out and the alumni were back to get their copies .... The night of the Senior Prom was near and the air seemed to grow more and more balmy .... Finally graduation came and went and as we look back we think, Boy, that was a great year! 7 xg, ,R Q X ,A r,f, , H, Wie l .fdalminirifrcz fiom DR. HEROLD C. HUNT G mem! Climb on. Here we go, across the years to 1971. Weire landing now. Hold tight! Look, we're in Washington, D. C., at the famous Statler Hotel, now owned by the prominent Dick Cederberg. The bellhops, Leon Rane and Ronnie Herr, take our bags, while the manager, Joe Brenner welcomes us heartily. Our lunch is served to the strains of soft music, played by Johnny Butler and his All-Girl Orchestra. Among the talented performers are: Jenny Herzog, Dorothy Fink, Yoa Sachs, and Pat Sharkey. Dorothy Daniels, our waitress, was so excited to see us that she spilled the order on the president of the United States, Chuck Page. President Page was very understanding, though, and told his private secretary, Judy Hays, to order us their specialty, cooked by the chief chef, Joel Schimpf. As we leave the hotel the cigarette girl, Lynn Hadden, gives us a friendly hello, while Diane Gladden, busily painting the portraits of the passing tourists, smiles heartily. A jet plane piloted by Buzzy Cohan and his co-pilot, Ronnie Tiller, rushes us to New York for the grand opening of Sennsapopin.', The play is produced by Bruce Falk and directed by Nenah Fry. Denise Dupuis is really doing a great job as star of the show. The chorus line has an amazing array of beauty and talent with Audre Dechman, Joan Ehemann, Iris Dloogatch, and Rene Vigon. Byron Toben is sure to write up a splendid report on the play for his editorial in the World News, especially since Barbara Fitzpatrick has the leading dance role. Esther Sorosky and Beverly Wilson have a big job ahead, since they are in charge of designing all the costumes and sets. Hopping in our plane again, with Barbara Weil as our attractive stewardess, we zoom westward to Chicago. Our old city has really changed since the architects, Dino Giovannini and Rich Howorka, have designed its new layouts. The Circus is in town. Letis stop in for a while. Why there's Lynn Olson and Lloyd Wilson taking all their little Wilsons to the Circus. The ring master, Skippy Aronson, tells us to go back stage and say hello to Barbara Berry and Eddie Mitchell with their abba-dabba monkeys. Look, there goes Dick McCaslin on his high-spirited horse, and Al Ruda practicing on the hi-wire. Who are the sad faced clowns? Why they're none other than Eddie Williams and Helen White. We'd better hurry now, but first letis stop in on the side shows to see Dorothy Vaskas, the mysterious snake charmer. There's Bob Hill trying to learn why snakes are so charming. We'd better bid farewell to the Circus and catch a cab to the airport. Well, what do you know? Our cabbie is Burt Harris. He informs us that the city is being efficiently run by Herb Stride as mayor and Mark Stern as head of Chicago's Dog Pound. Zooming westward again we can see below us the beautiful five million acre ranch owned by Joanne Schurman and Marlene Thompson. I hear they have loaned part of their land to Jack Ritchie as a training base for his World Series Champion baseball team. Look across the little stream, why itis Dorothy Moriarty and Chuck Hamrin on their little five acre chicken farm. In California we attend the world preview of the famous movie queens, Sue Glassman, Nancy Boruszak, Phyllis Smith, and Carol Morris. Beautiful opera singers Gloria Gahagan and Janet Unger are the guest stars. John Olander, the famous pianist, accompanies them while Happy Jacobson turns the pages of the score. Flash bulbs click as Louise Hollen- steiner takes the candid photographs for Carolyn Soderstrom's gossip column. Lincoln Howe and Jimmy Adkins enter followed by several models from their advertising agency. They are Doreen Kleerup, Polly Herold, Gerry Steiner, Jean Gladden, and Nancy Crane. As the sun sets on a busy day, we stroll down Sunset Boulevard with its new variety of flowers and trees discovered by scientist Nancy lnnis. She is working on a very important medical program with Dick and Cliff. The main issue is, Which Twin Has The Payne. L. Dow Bulhiozing Over After a somewhat dismal first half, our Senn Bulldogs awoke on a reverse by Leon Rane to be first in the scoring column. The score remained 6-O for the remainder of the third quarter, but things picked up at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Van Poucke stole the ball on the Sullivan 48 yard line, setting up the second touchdown. After a 15 yard penalty, Jacobson drove the ball to the 10 yard line where Miser, Giovan- nini, and Wilson relayed the ball to Jacobson in the end zone for our second touchdown. Takei made the extra point. One touchdown not being enough, Happy immediately scored another. Miser followed with the fourth and last touchdown in the fourth quarter. Our first touchdown came near the end of the second quarter, It was set up by Dino and Leon for Happy, and by Miser's blocking. The half found the score 6-O in favor of the Green and White. ' The second half kick-off found the ball at Roosevelt's 10 yard line on runs by Rane, Stroud, and Williams. Happy Jacobson promptly scored and Dino and Marty completed the con- version. The third score came in the same period with a 10 yd. pass from Dino to Miser, Jacobson making the extra point. Coach Dow put in the second and third string for the re- mainder of the game-the final score 20-O. JACK RITCHIE TOM WILSON BOB HERMAN 57 sf Qlfllfl -' CDZIGLLQ MQW ED HARRELL Wb0a .' A steady rain and a thick layer of mud dur- ing the first half of the Senn-Lakeview game prevented much action and the score held 0-O. As the third quarter rolled around, however, things picked up. On the third down, Wilson passed to Rane, who ran 60 yards, setting up the play for our first T.D. Karlin received the ball, and plunged 5 yards through tackle to score. Wilson hit Karlin for the extra point. Our next score came almost immediately when Wilson and Karlin collaborated for a T.D. and extra point. After a succession of long gains, Giovannini tossed to Jacobson for 6 points. With a faked kick, Jacobson passed to Harrell, who carried the ball over the goal. In spite of some good players and plenty of enthusiasm on the part of Adam Holtz, Happy Jacobson, Dick McCaslin, Jack Ritchie, Herb Stride, joe Stone, and Ed Williains the team wasnlt up to par. So they bowed out in favor of building up a winning team for the future years. Considering these difficulties, the season ended with 4 wins and 5 losses which indicates that Senn will be in the groove next year. After dropping the first two section tilts to Lane and Roosevelt, the Bulldogs whipped Taft 42 to 39. Leading the quintet was Roger Berlin and Bob Hill. The section champs from Von Steuben rolled to an easy victory over the Bulldogs. Gil Thomas, Roger Berlin, and Dick Temple turned in brilliant performances to score a 52 to 48 win over Sullivan. Bob Hill and Dave Abrams sparked a 44 to 38 victory over a stubborn Schurz five. They wound up the season in a spirited triumph over Waller 53 to 47. All divi- sions of the team came out in good standing. ln the novice class our gym- nasts took lst and 2nd places. The novices were led by Blanchard and Glick. Our intermediate boys swept all places. The spark plugs of the team were Payne, DeVelasco, Swanson and Ammon. ln the championship class Senn took two of the three places. The Bulldogs split one meet with Lane and trounced on Lakeview and Steinmetz for a record of three wins and no losses for the Juniors and two wins and one loss for the Seniors. Coach Ed Dow says the team has great spirit and looks good for the oncoming outdoor season. In the city meets held in March, our speedsters of the track scored six points for the Juniors and six points for the Seniors. The outstanding members of the junior squad were Steve Seeder who placed first in the triple broad jump with a jump of 29'6 , and Herb Harris who took fourth in the 60 yard dash. The Seniors who placed were Howie Field who took 5th in the broad jump, Shelly Dvorin who placed 4th in the shot put, and Bruce Falk who placed 5rd in the 440. Incidentally this is Falk's first year with the team., In all, the Senior and junior track squads have displayed good form thus far and show promise in the forthcoming outdoor season. 66 As usual, Coach Shaffner has his fencers rolling in high gear. Our boys dominated the state high school fencing tournament held recently in the De- partment of Welfare gym. Senn's number 1 team of Herman Velasco, Larry Kauffman, and Leonard Parmacek won team title on points from Senn team number 2. Senn's two squads tied on won and lost records. Combining the classical works of Schubert, Bach, Handel and other great masters with the more popular selections of Gershwin, Carmichel and their cohorts, the Orchestra strives to suit the tastes of students and adults alike. The suc- cess of their efforts is reflected by Superior ratings in recent citywide Orchestra competitions and the popularity of the performances which they are called on to make in assemblies and the Annual Music Festivals. The maintenance of a high standard of ensemble playing, even though the personnel of the group is constantly being altered by graduation, is a very difficult task. For instance, the Orchestra lost section leaders, john Butler, Norman Robins, john Weist, Nenah Fry, Eliz- abeth Sunshine, and Yoa Sachs, and experienced players, John Minton, Gerson Ecker, Sherry Zweig, Susie Pruss, and Warren Fuqua, by the graduation route in l95l. To name but a few: maintenance of Senn Hall, management of Student Court, ushering services, presentation of assemblies, etc. To carry on the business of the club, ten committees have been formed: School Spirit, Grand Jury, Morals, Stage, Assembly, Freshman Welcoming, Transportation, Record, Correspondence, Magazine. The Green and White Club exists solely to help the students and faculty of Senn High School, without whose generous support it could not exist. 86 L 1 Top Piclmza' Payne, Franzen, Brenner, Hamrin, Roth, Falk, Lopaty. Front: lst Lieutenant Franklin Kavanaugh, Captain Edward McGov- ern, lst Lieutenant William O'Daniel, Major Edward Cummings, Captain john Pollock, Captain Gary Kushner, lst Lieutenant Duane Swier. Officers in the ROTC are chosen for their high qualities of leadership, integrity, and proficiency in military subjects. They set the example which the rest of the cadets are expected to follow. The Senn ROTC is organized along the same lines as an infantry battalion. The commanding ofiicet is a major, the executive officer, adjutant, and company commanders, cap- tains, and the platoon leaders, lieutenants. 126 raining 01706 BATTALION STAFF NON -COMMISSIONED OFFICERS The battalion staff sees to it that the various activities of the unit are co-ordinated and run smoothly. There is a vast amount of paper work connected to a unit of this size and it is the responsibility of the staiif to get it done. Lefl to Right: Pollock, O'Daniel, Cummings, Swier. The non-commissioned officers assist the commissioned officers wherever possible. In doing so, they gain valuable training which will help them to be better officers should they make the grade. Because of their leadership, the SENN unit has received an honor rating for the past 23 years. lst Row: Master Sergeants: Flesh, Schwartz, Maxon, Harris. 2110! It is not easy to get on the team. First, there are long weeks of practice with the sighting and aiming bars, then the triangulation and trigger squeeze exercises and the four firing positions, prone, sitting, kneel- ing, and standing. XV hen a cadet has mastered these there are hours of dry firing on the range. The cadets who stick it out, however, are moulded into the real marksmen which make SENN'S rifle teams some of the best in the city. At the time this book went to press the rifle team had just finished firing in the Inter-Col- legiate Rifle Match. The team made the highest score ever fired at SENN. 7265 points out of a possible 8000. Melnick, Lee, Levinson. Schwartz, Maxon, O'Danie1. Carlson, Diener.
