The semester started with the election of class officers. The first results showed only Claire lohnson, secretary, and Lois Desmond, luncheon chairman, as victors. The runoffs then took place, with Bob Mueller winning the job of president, Neubert Bohl, vice-president: Patricia Striblen, treasurer, and Howard Nelson, marshal judge. During the semester the class took part in campaigning for the Thanksgiving and Christmas funds, in entertaining the Chicago Parental School at Christmas, in giving full co-operation in any activity that was asked. The high school days ended with a magnificent luncheon in the Marine Dining Room of the Edgewater Beach Hotel. lt was the afternoon of graduation, Ianuary 27. All the graduates enjoyed a full afternoon of dining and dancing to the music of Del Baker. To climax the high school days, the graduation exercises took place in Senn Auditorium at 8 o'clock the night of Ianuary 27. Thus the high school days of the Ianuary Class, l944, Were over. All School Council Senn All School Council is, Without a doubt, one of the most active organ- izations of the school. Although many obstacles stood in the Way of the 1943- 1944 All School Council, they were overcome by the keen spirit and deep interest of the members. I The council was comprised of the officers of the tive classes, the 4A Luncheon and Prom chairmen, the three Marshal judges, and one delegate from each division room. The most important activity of the year was the War Bond and Stamp Drive. Through the untiring efforts of the students the council had much success in this venture. Thanksgiving time was made a happy time for the needy children of Chicago. Our Thanksgiving collection Went tar in excess of the quota set and this money was presented to the School Children's Aid Society. To set a new goal in the membership of the PTA, which already numbered over a thousand, was another attainment for the council. The Christmas season brought comfort and happiness to the boys and girls at the Chicago Parental School, for the council presented a splendid program and a gay party there. Constantly backing each drive throughout the year, the council helped Senn go over the top in both Waste Paper Drive and in the tremendous Red Cross Drive, to which Senn donated Well over two thousand dollars. Less Vandalism, Less Destruction, Less Duration, a fine slogan by which the council put on a campaign against vandalism in the school, was another project. With the aid of the art department, and assemblies, this proved to be one ot the council's most successful ventures. Senn salutes the All School Council and its director, Principal David M. Davidson, for superb accomplishments during the past year. Page 63 Senior Council-Fall ROW l: Johnson, Bohl, McDonnell, Mr. Davidson, Mueller, Dr. Zimmerman, Striblen, Desmond. CSTANDINGD: Caroline Mondoux, Hildegard Cedergren, Nancy Haggerty, Shirley Becker, Lucille Burns. l944l Forum Terminating a year of continuous effort, the l944 Forum Staff succeeded in producing another Annual of which Senn can be proud. Early in September these busy journalists started their Work, and when the Ianuary class grad- uated, Business Manager Dorie-lean Swanson did so, too, leaving behind a splendid record. But the Spring staff carried on superbly, ably headed by Editors-in-Chief Bayna Goldberg and Don Scalzo, who shouldered the super- vision along with many additional priority Worries. Backing up the Editors were the superb Business Co-Managers, Nancy Hag- gerty and Hildegard Cedergren, who took care of the financial department. Sparkling Write-ups were composed by Clubs Editor Shirley Becker and Or- ganizations Editor Caroline Mondoux. The Biography Department literally flew along under the capable hands of Lucille Burns, Lois Chimberoff, loan Kauf- mann, Ellen Lonergan and loe Bleeden. George McDonnell, Charles Ziesk, Yakir Korey, and Lee Stern wrote up the Sports Department. The Art Work was in the hands of Dolly Kirschner, Nels Nelson, Bob McCracken, Milt Musson, Dick Clohecy, Bill Daugherty, Bob Larson, Sid Bergh, and Bill Dounan. The typists were Mildred Aidem, Marcele Solomon, Frances Cosmas, Shirley Dia- mond, Lois Segal and Sonya Minsky. The constant assistance and guidance of Miss Elizabeth Corcoran, Mr. George Bobertson, and Miss Olive Kunz made possible the successful publica- tion of the Annual. Ever since its organization the Senn News has been among the first to help promote drives and campaigns for the benefit of the school, the city, and the nation. The spring semester Senn News, headed by co-editors Edgar Morse and Elaine Mariinson, produced outstanding papers. Ably edited by Charles Ziesk, the Sports page presented to its avid readers a true account of athletics par- ticipated in at Senn. The laugh-interest was taken care of by Feature Co-Editors Harriet Baker and Ioelyn Saltzmany the duties of News and Copy Editors were handled by lackie Cooper, Elvera Werner, and loseph Bleeden, Elaine Mann- heim., and Al Polikoff, respectively. Dolores Kirschner and Charles Schridde added their talents in the sparkling cartoons that illuminated its pages. Busi- ness Administration, including campaigns, subscriptions, and circulation, was capably managed by lack Leadinghouse, Business Manager. Headed by Editor Doris Baum in the fall semester, Senn News Staff dis- played much talent, shown by the journalistic efforts of Feature Editor Arlene Beutlinger, Sports Editor Mel Bressler, News Editor Hank Leberstein, and EX- change Editors Charlene Crothers and Claire lohnson, and Business Co-Man- ager Flo Fisch. The combined efforts of all these journalists, not forgetting the invaluable aid of their efficient advisor, Miss Corcoran, presented to its readers a Senn News that truly was a commendable publication. Far in the distance, beyond a purple curtain of misty hopes and fears, lie the untried peaks that tease the imagination to greater effort. This year Senn Hall as a theater was discarded for the facilities of beauti- ful Loyola Theater. The first play, the American Way, will always remain a highlight of Senn dramatic history, as this was the high point of the year and all players' thoughts reach forward and backward to it. But there were other lesser climaxes that hold a tender part in our memory, other public appearances for smaller casts and special one-acts done for several outside groups: all joy- ous heights that measure up well to the spring production of Seven Sisters done at Loyola. The officers for the year were Richard League, president, Macey Pastor, Richard Preinauer, fall and spring vice-presidents. Lesser officers were filled by Marjorie Goodman, Mary Assimos, Gloria Hochsinger, and Kathryn Gildner, all of whom were under the watchful guidance of Miss Skillen. Who fixes the tricky lighting and works hand in hand with the Players to produce our terrific Senn plays? The answer to all these questions is: Senn Workers, a group of talented students who form the art section of Senn's Dramatic Depart- ment. They are more than this, however, for the Workers have been part of a great Senn tradition since l9l9. Under the direction of Miss Doniat, this group works with speed and pre- cision to create the illusion of many scenes. Pity the poor individuals who have never visited their storeroom adjacent to Room l74, referred to officially as the Dugout, those unfortunates who have never been initiated into the mysteries of the theater, and the Worker's pride and joyftheir collection of properties. Student assistants for the fall productions, The American Way, were Flor- ence Swanson and Charlotte Bergdahl, assisted by Lorraine Ejan and Irene Kajarig Sharron Kopald had charge of costumes and Bob Iohnson directed the lighting. For the spring play, Seven Sisters, Iune Decker and Helene Teichert de- signed settings, Bob Young and Bill Olson assisted by Don Unger and Marshal Cherkas managed technical matters. Lily Soderquist was in charge of the cos- tumes, while Sy Lieberman was all important everywhere. lngenuity and imagination coupled with a capacity for work are the watch- words of the Workers. - Page 75 Players and Workers strive for success in Seven Sisters and American Way. The picnic, which was held in the Edgebrook Forest Preserves, highlighted the 1943 fall semester, while a luncheon featured the l944 spring semester. Nuebert Bohl headed the fall staff as Colonel and Elmer Peterson, second in rank, was Lieutenant Colonel. Representing the Marshals at the Student Court was Major Executive Charles Wright. Adjutant Majors, Herbert Gar- lorecht and Nick Tappas, completed the high command. The spring semester found Charles Pounian in command. Ted Paddock, as his assistant, was charged with the duties of the Lieutenant Colonel. Monte Posey as Major Executive and Adjutant Major rounded out the higher ranks. Senn ROTC Due to the fact that this country was engaged in a great war, the ROTC found themselves beginning a new year with a new military instructor. ln the fall of l943, Cpl. lamtes P. latropulos took over the duties of military instruc- tor at Senn. He has had valuable experience, much of it being gained at Waller High School, where he served in the capacity of commanding officer in 1928. The cadets and officers contributed freely their spare time in helping out the ROTC and the school. On Saturdays, the cadets acted as ushers at all of Senn's football games. Many of them gave up part of their lunch period to serve as lunch-guards, working hard to keep the lunchroom in a tidy condition. The cadets also participated at PTA affairs whenever they were asked to. Since the ROTC took second place in the city during the last Federal ln- spection, it seemed only fitting that they have a rifle range. Therefore, during the summer a rifle range and drill room were installed, which gave the cadets an incentive to go out and take first place. At the close of the semester, Medal Awards were presented to the follow- ing cadets: lst Lt. William Daugherty, outstanding cadet officer: lst Lt. Leo Gillman, outstanding platoon leader: Sgt. Robert Henshaw, outstanding ser- geantg Sgt. Kenneth Piedlow, outstanding uniformed cadet: Sgt. Theodore Towne, outstanding uniformed cadetp Cpl. One of the achievements of the Senn ROTC was the formation of the rifle team. On this newly formed team were: Lt. Col. Robert O'Connor, Major Leo Gillman, Captain George Andrews, Captain Richard Clohecy, Sgt. Ray Mattox, Iohn Taylor, 2nd Lt. Thomas Sugars, Albert White, Sgt. Robert Ullrich, and lst Lt. Race Wilt. These cadets have already competed with several other schools, and have performed with the coolness and accuracy of veterans. Page 83 Company R One of the branches of the ROTC is the Color Guard. ln the fall semester, under the command of lst Lt. Iohn Leengran, the Color Guard performed for the football games and for almost every assembly. When the spring semester came around, Capt. George Andrews was found to be in charge of this organi- zation. They could be seen almost any Wednesday morning participating in the reveiws. On the Color Guard were: Sgt. Leonard Rose, Cpl. Don Olson, Cpl. Merritt Ringer, Cpl. Roy Carlson, and Cpl. lohn Linn. As soon as the semester began, the ROTC began organizing the Crack Pla- toon. The cadets and officers drilled in the Armory, morning and afternoon, Page 84 fa'A.,.,.A-.A-- fa puiiipouiy p preparing tor the day when all the platoons oi the city would be together in an exhibition. Commanding this group was Major Rodney Confer. They com- peted with the other schools on March 25, and kept up Senn's good reputation by taking seventh place. Last May, by virtue of the Federal lnspection, Senn took second place right behind Tilden High School. Even though they are in second place, the Senn regiment is still not satisfied. Next semester they will be trying for first place, and judging from the way they look now, it looks as though they will be right up Where they belong, on top. Nine of its members represent the baton twirlers while the remaining eleven are members of the Concert Band. The Corps elects new members each semester according to its graduating vacancies, all of whom have taken an extremely aggressive part in Senn activities. The Baton Corps, under the able direction of Commander Martilou Fargo, has been active in many oi the Green and White's ventures. This year the Baton Corps took an active interest in shooting, possibly brought about by their practicing in the ROTC rifle range. Sharp shooters Patti Ann Lincoln and Lois Drummond held the highest score, that being 48 out of a possible 50. Nearing the end of another brilliant season, the Corps members are already looking forward to resuming their activities in the fall. Page 87 ND BA TC HQ. N SEN Senn RCTC Band A crowd of nearly two thousand, the largest in several years, filled Senn Hall in March to hear the Spring Band Concert, the second of two concerts held each year to show the results of the year's hard work. Under the able leadership of Captain Charles Cstergren and Cadet Major Iohn Carlson the Concert Band had a very successful year and participated in many activities. The band cooperated with Civilian Defense to promote the Third War Loan drive by marching in two parades and participating in a large community meeting. On Armistice Day the Band collaborated with the Am- erican Legion in celebration of this event. The Concert Band contributed to the ROTC by playing for reviews on Wednesday mornings. Being a part of the ROTC they participated in the Federal Inspection. School spirit was dis- played throughout the year as the band members were found at all football games beside playing at several assemblies. The non-corns were headed by First Sgt. David Kantro and Marshall Cher- kas. Meetings were held to pick the choice boys for ratings. In preparation for the City Band Contest the Band not only only rehearsed eighth and ninth periods, but also devoted many afternoons to practice. Ninety strong, the Senn Band entered Class A city competition in April and earned an E rating. The City Solo contest found several Band members participating. Beston Abrams played the baritone saxophone, Seymour Axelrod, the tenor saxo- phone: Howard Ader and Iohn Carlson, alto saxophone, and Lawrence Free- man, tuba. All received E ratings. Pete Matz was graded G in the clarinet contest. Assisting the Concert Band was the Military Band under the direction of Cadet First Lieutenant William Russo. These players and those in the Begin- ners' and lunior Bands look forward to entering the Concert Band so they may participate in their interesting activities. Senn Band is very proud of the fact that service men, graduate band mem- bers, visited them weekly, telling of their experiences and leaving inspiring- messages with the members. Helping the band in many ways was the Senn Band Parents Association. Through their efforts Senn has the finest instruments and one of the best musi- cal libraries in the country. Money was raised for the band by parties given by this hard working association. Page 89 HOW l: Marcus, Pedersen, Auld, Assimos, Mrs. Keats, Nelson, Petrillo, Price, August. Mixed Chorus Senn Mixed Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Keats started out with a bang this year. After working with the choir for only one semester, Mrs. Keats ably led it in the Annual Chicago Public High School Choral Competition in which a rating of E was received. The Choir made several appearances within the last year, such as singing for the P.T.A. and numerous assemblies. At Christmas the choir participated in the four assemblies and afterwards carolled through the halls. However the most important of last semester's appearances was the Spring Festival. Every member strove hard and attained perfection for this festival last semester. At the Winter Music Festival the Choir sang several numbers, among them was Stout Hearted Men by Victor Herbert. This was sung with the accompani- ment of the Orchestra under the direction of Mr. Gomberg. The other numbers on this program were The Lord's Prayer, Hymn of Youth, This Quiet Night, Far Away, and The Call of the Road. Page 90 A few additional activities were added besides the usual class work. One day a month was turned over to a program in which choir members partici- pated, displaying their individual talents. The students looked forward to these days when they were entertained by their fellow singers. An octet was formed by students who were interested in gathering both in and outside school for singing enjoyment. With the accompaniment and direction of Jeanne 'Auld this group put in its first appearance before the North Central Association. All Sennites enjoyed the group's selections of Victor Herbert Medleys which they presented at this time. The members of this group were: Mary Assimos and Lois Nelson, sopranosg Rose Marie Petrillo and Nan Robertson, altosy Bill Ritchie and Beverly Pedersen, tenorsp and lack Lungran and Bob Price, bassesp all of whom took a lively part in other Choir activities. One of the Choir's favorites, who was esteemed highly in the minds of all who knew him, was Bob Mandel. All old and new members showed Bob their feelings when the Choir presented him with an identification bracelet. Bob left the Choir to enter service. Due credit must be given to the faithful pianist, Ieanne Auld. Without her unerring patience and consideration the rapid advancement in preparation for all activities would have been marred considerably. Girls' Chorus Senn Girls' Chorus, now working under the leadership of Mrs. Bittner, added several fine new voices to the group as the result of conducting tryout vocal tests. Many of the girls received Girls' Chorus letters for being a member longer than three semesters. They are Leone Thompson, Harriet Williams, Iune Lee Klingelhoefer, Louise Temme, Iune Giellach, Gloria Olson, and Ruth Loeser. Shortly after Mrs. Bittner arrived, the accompanist, Iune Klingelhoefer, com- plicated matters by moving to California. However due to the splendid co- operation of the Senn News, four talented accornpanists were rounded up. They play on different days and are: Delores Harris, Elizabeth Mohaupt, Muriel Patterson, and William Fasig. Cnce a month the chorus disperses with the usual work and has a social period. These programs give the girls a chance to individually display their ability at playing or singing and always give an entertaining performance. Through voluntary contributions the girls have added some interesting new numbers to their library of music. These songs will be used by the future members of the chorus. The officers of this singing group were Betty Sigworth, president: lean Larson, vice-presidentp Audrene lohnson, secretary: Ruth Roberts, treasurer, and Nancy McFarland, librarian. Page 92 Orchestra Senn Orchestra, which has been growing steadily year by year in num- ber and ability, is now larger than ever before with a membership of approxi- mately 50 players. Under the very able leadership of Mr. Gomberg, who has been directing for two years, the orchestra has become fully recognized as one of the most important parts of the Serin Music Department, besides being an outstanding part of the school itself. For the past two years, S ratings have been won in the all-city music con- tests against the stiff competition of various other music groups, revealing the determination with which the members of the orchestra strive to do their best. Aside from these inspiring performances, the orchestra held concerts semi- annually, including the well known music festivals, which were all huge suc- cesses and did much to build up its reputation of well-played music. Playing for assemblies, P.T.A. affairs, and accompanying the many Senn plays, the orchestra has always helped to send graduates on their way with fonder mem- ories of their alma mater. Among this season's graduates, the Orchestra found itself saying goodbye to eight of its former talented members. These were Lucille Cartolano, lane Cotts, Earl Field, Loraine Guinea, lack Lundin, who will all be well remem- bered as a part of Senn's famous drum trio, Francis Norager, Betty Plambeck and Cyril Touff. With a brilliant record behind it, there is no doubt that the orchestra will grow even larger and better in the future and truly great things can be ex- pected of it as a result. The interpretation of guarding and defending liberty is to aid the students and the community in every Way possible. Various speakers appeared before the Association, which consisted of l,l36 members. Teachers and students brought inspiration by their partici- pation in the Association's activities. A budget of S5859 was earned for use in the support of student activities, present and future. Contributions were made to the ROTC, the print shop, and the English department, and two scholarship funds were established. A memorial fund was established in the custody of the school treasurer. When all former Senn students who are Gold Star heroes of World War ll are known, a suitable memorial will be chosen. The efforts to secure the vacant land adjacent to the school on the West were partially successful. Parents, teachers, students and community leaders met with the recreation committee of the city council, on April 3, l944, and the committee recommended the ordinance. Their record proves, though, that it's quality, not quantity, that counts. They capably handled the job in the year of the Red Cross's greatest need. Two hundred and titty dollars was Senn's enrollment contribution to the Red Cross. Over two thousand dollars was collected in the spring drive for the Red Cross War Fund. Collections were handled through the division rooms, and a large service flag with stars fthanks to Mr. Robertson? showed whether a room had met its quota, doubled that amount, or given even more. Handling collections was not their only work. Fancy boxes made by the art classes, were packed for the occupational therapy program ot the Red Cross. With odd pieces of yarn, the club made two large aighans tor hospital use. In addition, four baby afghans were finished during the year. Besides the art classes, which made attractive menu covers and writing folders, the home economics classes made children's dresses and other gar- ments ior the Red Cross. Edith Rodems, as committee chairman, contributed toward making the club a successful one. She was aided by the following, who were also delegates to the Iunior Red Cross Council: Shirley Ralsky, Alice Shapiro, and Merritt Ringer. Adviser lnstituting as expressed by one of many students, something long needed and long awiaited at Senn, a group of thirty-five senior boys presented them- selves to the student body last March as a new club, the Green and White. With the purpose of the club, United student leadership working for the betterment of the school, always in mind, the club has attempted many worth- while projects during the semester. All of these have not been as successful as they could have been, but a marked improvement in matters attempted is plain to see and a firm foundation for future Green and White members to work on has been established. Among the projects attempted was the social time in Senn Hall during lunch periods. Improvements in school stores: removal of the race prejudice, Friday night dances, an improvement of general student conduct, so that such events as stunt day may soon be revivedg and a new athletic field to help keep Senn teams always on top, were a few other important jobs undertaken. So, we dream forward, forward toward a prouder Senn, toward a happier, friendlier Senn-toward a Senn that anyone in the city would be proud to say he was a part of. The Green and White has, as any untried group, made mis- takes, but with the continued support and cooperation of students and faculty are sure of attaining these dreams in the near future. Despite the lack ot competition among other schools the Senn Camera Club took it upon themselves to continue operations, with the result being a con- tinuous hum ot activity. Fortunately, the club was ably advised by Mr. Wan- tuch, who was kind enough to put his knowledge and the darkroom facilities at the disposal of interested students. Members oi the club spent their time taking pictures of school activities and came up with very tine results. A large contest was held in the school among club members and the ex- hibition presented drew many well deserved acknowledgments. To judge the contest the club managed to get some world reknown photographic artists who were surprised at the quantity and quality of pictures that could be pro- duced at a high school. During the weekly meetings of the two sections of the club, members were given an opportunity to discuss current international problems. ln the fall semester the club took a trip to the Chicago Historical Society, where movies on Latin America were shown g then the members had a luncheon, which was followed by a personally conducted visit to the rare book room of the Newberry Library. Guest speakers afforded many interesting meetings for the club. Some of our guests were: the assistant dean of Lawrence College, the Yugoslavian con- sul-general, a representative of the Chicago Radio Council, a University of Chicago Round Table, and members of the Senn faculty. Several Sennites in Service returned to the club and gave first-hand accounts of their travels and experiences. l. R. Club members had the privilege of attending the American Council of the Institute of Pacific Relations' Conference. Edith Rodems was president of the first section of the I. R. Club, while Bob Cohen held this position in the second section. Both retained these positions during the fall and spring semesters. A few of the other club leaders were Edgar Blumenfeld, Al Polikoff, Vivien Karatz, Florence Simon, Barbara Quinlan, and Archie Pounian. The association of students with the I. R. Club and its splendid sponsor, Miss Hafemann, proved to be one of combined learning and fun. Page 98 ROW 1: Bums, Gustafson, Miss Cavanagh, Cotts, Assimos, Peara, Kakarakis, Shlemon. Charm is a Hostess's main characteristic and she tries to develop it through social contacts made in Senn and outside of school. Choosing the places they Wanted to visit, the girls made tours to Universi- ties, Hull House, the Goodman Theater, and other institutions. These were entertaining as well as educational. Prominent speakers visited the Club and spoke on various topics of interest to the members, as how to conduct yourself when applying for a position and the opportunities awaiting a girl upon graduation. A Christmas dance, which has become a yearly tradition of Senn, was a project of the Club. A dance was also held in the early spring. Tag Days were conducted by the Hostesses and were always overwhelmingly successful. The last tag day held netted an amount of approximately S250-the highest amount collected yet. As early as March, members, interested in gardening, sowed vegetable and flower seeds in boxes in the conservatory. By May, the sturdy young plants were ready for transplanting to the members' outdoor gardens. Plants grown in soilless gardens were compared with plants the dirt gardners grew. Several nutritional experiments were conducted with the young rats which were born in the lab early in March. The carefully kept data showed clearly the importance of certain vitamins in the diet. The club kept a bird migration calendar on the board, recording the birds seen, from the first robin in February through the numerous warblers of April and May. The early morning bird trips taken during the first two weeks of May will long be remembered. Bird talks illustrated with colored slides, sound movies, and reports given by fellow members on their experiments were presented on the monthly programs. After an inactive fall semester due to crowded chemistry labs, the Senn Chemistry Club was re- organized this Spring. The purpose of the club has not changed however, that purpose being to develop a greater interest in the field of chemistry. The policy ot the club was tour-fold. lt included individual experiments, discussions, group experiments and tours to places of interest to a chemistry student. All members displayed enthusiasm and cooperated in making the meetings a success. In step with modern warfare, members have presented to the club spec- tacular demonstrations on the preparation and processing of plastics, the types and applications of the various war explosives and gasses, and the principles of the modern gas mask. In addition to the serious experiments, there were many thrills when flames of colored fire and weird glowing substances were produced through chemistry. Much interest was shown in the programs presented by the members. Through the whole-hearted effort of every member, and the able guidance of its sponsor, Dr. Davidson, the club is progressing and gaining greater knowl- edge and interest in the field of chemistry. Adviser The French Club at Senn High School was formed with the hopes of plac- ing before the students interesting aspects of the life and spirit of the French people. The students were given the opportunity to establish themselves in a group Whose sole purpose Was to make known the grand culture of these lib- erty loving people. ln a group composed of beginning students they could do this by means of a program which was devoted to the presentation of in- formation not given ordinarily in the regular class-room. By means of singing popular French songs, monologues, dialogues, games, anecdotes, guessing- games, guided lecture tours through the Art Institute of Chicago and dining at one of the most authentic French restaurants in this city, the students were made to feel part of a French society. Such a program had a definite value in making a living usage of the lang- uage. The student could then understand more readily the utility of class Work. He could learn a great deal While he Was having a good time, and at the same time, he would establish Within himself, the bonds of respect and friendship so desirable between civilized nations. Programs Were arranged accordingly to increase this understanding by acquainting members with the language, customs and culture of the other Americas. Hence, some of the activites Were: discussions and movies on various countries South of the Border, Spanish conversational records, debates in Spanish, discussions on current happenings in Latin America, dramatizations of scenes from daily life in Spain, lectures by faculty members, as by Miss Hanley, who spoke on Latin American Art, and by Miss Gross, who spoke concerning what she saw on her trip through South America. Highlighting the Spring semester Was the Pan-American Day assembly, which featured a humorous original play, My Spanish Sweetheart, and an entertaining amateur program in which members of the Spanish Club par- ticipated. Officers in the three different sections of the Spanish Club were as follows: President, Lillian Gelfond, Elsie Potter, and Alan Feillen during the fall semester, While Herbert Siegel, Mary Assimos, and Mildred Platt held this position throughout the second semester. But it was not only these which brought them together, but also the fine activities which were planned for the semester. The girls met each Thursday morning for a half hour of discussion covering many problems of work in offices after graduation, post-War situations and possibilities. These discussions Were helpful because many of the graduating girls planned to take positions with government offices. There were many different and interesting activities, such as personality contests, where several girls applied to Mrs. Lawler for a position, and the rest of the girls judged her for appearance, manners, stenographic ability, and cour- tesy. Apart from personality contests there were typing tests, and trips to dif- ferent business places, where the club members saw the actual office work performed. This fine group of girls, under the able supervision of Mrs. Lawler, really enjoyed their work, and strived to attain a certain goal, that of higher speed in their stenographic work and greater efficiency in their general work. The club worked on several new projects, namely the student forum, wherein club members attended discussions and meetings of prominent peo- ple, then held an informal open round table. The club ran into a little difficulty early in the semester. Eight attempts were made to hold a first meeting, but holidays, adjustments, etc., prevented the coming together of the faithful. A just return was experienced by the club in the form of an unexpectedly large number of members, ll0, an all time high for Careers, considerably bettering last years enrollment of 80. Under the able direction of Miss Hackett and the new student officers, the club was one of the fastest growing at Senn, and expectations of big things from this group were well founded. Mrs. Harold Some years ago a club was organized, the primary object of which was to develop a greater interest in swimming for the girls at Senn. At present this group is composed of advanced swimmers as well as some who are Workng hard to be advanced, but Whose chief qualification is a real interest in swimming. To qualify for Nereids, a girl must execute a front dive, and swim. lOO yards, 60 of which must be executed with the front crawl. Throughout the year, the group swam during the ninth period on Mondays and the fourth on Fridays. Meetings for the purpose of formulating policies and making plans were held every other Wednesday morning at eight o'clock in the Teachers' Lunch Room. Because so many girls were working after school, social events had to be rather limited. An lntra-Mural Swimming Meet, the program augmented with several water ballets, was a part of the spring program. Points earned in these meets may be applied to the Nereid letter, which can be won after receiving five hundred points. One of the latest features in the point winning program was the mythical endurance swim around Lake Michigan. Since endurance swimming is now a big part of the war program in swimming, this fitted nicely into the program. Football Playing off and on football, the 1943 edition of Senn gridders found itself relegated to fifth place in the North Section competition for championship honors. The Bulldogs earned an even split in sectional action, but dropped two non-league clashes while winning one from Chicago Vocatonal to bring the complete seasonal record to tour victories in nine games. An inexperienced Senn eleven opened the grid season by being over- powered by a strong Evanston team, 26-6. The Bulldogs bounded back the next Saturday to blank Roosevelt 12-U in their initial North Section encounter. The next league game shattered all Senn hopes for a North Section title when Taft ripped through a jittery Green and White squad to the tune of 27-O. A free lance team in the form of Chicago Vocational was next greeted by the Senn gridders with open hands as they romped over their foes 33-13. Senn continued its scoring rampage when Waller tell before a 44-O onslaught in which the Waller goal was crossed during all periods of play. The Green and White then entered the Schurz game with high hopes for the runner-up berth in the North Section standings. For three periods Schurz and Senn battled furiously in the vicinity of mid-field before the west siders tallied on a 20-yard pass in the fourth quarter to take a 6-O lead. The following week-end the Bulldogs were faced with the calamity of losing Page llO to a one-man team, Don Lesher of Lake View. The final five minutes of play proved disastrous to Lesher and his teammates, however, for it was during this span that Meyer and Kemp scored to provide a 19-B win. In the last league encounter oi the season Sullivan surprised everyone by whipping Senn 13-O by capitalizing on second halt miscues by the Bulldog eleven. The curtain was dropped on the i943 season when Senn met Loyola to continue the annual inter-league rivalry between the two north side neighbors which originated in l924. Trailing 20-U in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs threw a scare to their Catholic league rivals when Ted Kemp scored twice to bring the score to 20-13. With the clock allowing but another minute of play, Iohn Maloney scarnpered 65 yards to assure a Loyola victory, the scoreboard read 27-13 when the rivals left the gridiron. Following the seasons' end, the entire Senn football team met and elected the honorary captain ot the 1943 Bulldogs. When the votes had been tabulated Mack Fairbanks had been nominated, due to his brilliant line play and team spirit which existed throughout the season. Senn did not have a championship eleven this year, but the nucleus of the squad will return next fall, and under the able leadership of Coach Ed Dow should once again reach heights which have been attached to past Green and White grid teams. Page 113 lunior Basketball Never before in the history of Senn has there been a more so-called hot or cold athletic team than the one which participated in the l944 North Section Iunior basketball race under the Bulldog title. Although the team showed great promise in pre-season skirmishes, they were rudely awakened to find themselves in fifth place at the season's end. The squad took five of its seven practice games and entered its first league tussle with Amundsen. Hopes and scores ran high that day and the Bulldogs emerged victorious, 56-3l. ln the next game Waller froze the Bulldogs out of a chance for first place in the section with a 65-55 triumph. Lane was next in line and their only sectional defeat of 34-30 was suffered. Then came Boosevelt. With the Bough-Biders leading at the first quarter, Senn finally won a gallant uphill fight, 38-37. Steinmetz and Taft were disposed of easily, 54-37 and 54-43, respectively, but trouble was again encountered at Von Steuben, when Von em.erged vic- victoriousp 50-40 was the losing tally against Lake View. The Schurz game necessitated the consultation of the record books and the eventual changing of them, for Senn had never before scored 75 points in one game. Buzz Murphy broke the individual scoring record that day, another record was broken as Bed Sullivan gathered in 2l points, which helped him to raise his total above l00 points and along with Murphy be the first pair to do so in one year during Senn basketball history. Bay Nusinow, a lanuary graduate, was team captain for the fall semester, and Sullivan held down the job in spring. The outstanding play of Bill Clson on both defense and offense, Bob Cunniff with his remarkable push shots, and Hal Lauren's defensive work must be noted here along with that of Murphy and Sullivan. Senior Basketball A glance at the records would indicate that the l943-44 Senn Senior basket- ball team was a poor example to demonstrate Doc Naismith's winter sport. By winning but four of their ten league games, this squad wound up in a tie for fifth place in the North Section race. Powerful Amundsen was the initial foe of the campaign. Although the Vikings got off to a bad start, they recovered their bearings to come from behind in the second half to win, 40-22. Another loss followed in the form of the Waller game, in which Wa1ler's North Section champs reached a score of 54 to our 37. Lane Tech proved to be the first barrier for our Bulldogs to clear, when the Green and White copped a thriller, 33-32. The next game found Bob Olander scoring 14 points, but receiving no sup- port. As a result, Boosevelt won out, 46-4lf The local lads then hit the win trail when they routed Steinmetz, 52-34, and edged out Taft, 44-41. Andy Zuccarello poured through 30 points in these two games to pace both victories. Another playoff contender, Von Steuben, had to come from behind in the second half to whip the stubborn Senn five, 47-31. By downing Sullivan, 38-32, Senn entered the Schurz tussle with a playoff berth as reward to the victor. Once again a second half rally proved fatal, and a crack at the city title was lost, 23-21. A 32-31 loss to Lake View closed the season. Zuccarello, even though declared ineligible after six games, led the team in scoring and was followed by Walters and David. Another year has gone by, but these boys will be back next cage season and, with a year's experience under their belts, the cry then may well be, Watch out for Senn. Page 115 Apparatus Senn gymnasts proved themselves to be the elite of the City League for the fifth consecutive year when Coach Bergmann's muscle boys Were forced to display great form in outdistancing the best field of entrants to compete in many years. Last year the Green and Whte topped the runner-up Lane Tech squad by 156 points, but this year the local boys were satisfied with a 34 point advan- tage over a strong Lindblom team. ln addition to copping another team title, Senn once again was able to domi- nate the individual prizes. lack Austin and Huber Zapp Wound up in a tie for the championship honors, While lim Bouffard Won a second place berth in the intermediate division. ln the novice class Earl Iohnson registered a tie for second place with a Crane gymnast. Bouffard, Sterling, Wooldridge, Wachta, Reynolds, and Nolan all placed in the upper ten of their intermediate division, as the Bulldogs demonstrated a complete monopoly. The novices were also frequented by Senn boys, lohnson, Elia, Blau, and McCloskey being able toplace. Austin, Zapp, and Hughes provided the accomplishment of the afternoon, however, when Hughes took a fourth, While the other two boys deadlocked for the honor of being the champion of the City League Senior apparatus division. As in recent years, the crown was again a true team triumph and the result of fine coaching and serious training. Thus Senn once again was the recipient of a beautiful bronze plaque, symbolic of gymnastic supremacy, a great achieve- ment by a great team. The same lads, with only one excep- tion, earned the l943 lunior title and after graduating into the upper bracket turned the trick again last lanuary. ln the lunior division, the Green and White, defending titleholders, made a desperate effort to retain the championship, but the best they could do was a third place. During the day's events eight Senn skaters, four from the Senior division and four from the Iunior bracket, earned points. ln the 880-yard Senior dash, Dick Wenzel and Earl Iohnson finished second and third, respectively, to bring Senn up to the final event, the four-man relay, with a chance to win the title. The relay was to determine the Public League Senior Winners. Comprising the relay team were Dave Fargo, Earl Iohnson, lohnny Carlson, and Dick Wenzel. Their speed and efficiency were responsible for the capture of the Senior title by Senn. The lunior meet, although won by Lane Tech, provided Senn with high honors when Freddy Gross came home in front of the pack in the 440-yard dash and Bobby Berhulst placed third in the same event. The lunior relay team wasn't quite as fortunate as the older boys and this cost them the championship. Eight letters were awarded to members of the ice skating team. Captain lohnny Carlson, Dave Fargo, Dick Wenzel, and Earl lohnson were recipients of the major letter awards, While Freddy Cross, Bobby Verhulst, Alex Sterling, and Norman Berkson received minor letters. Page ll7 Fencing Improving its l943 record by one notch, the Senn fencing team of l944 stepped up the pace and copped second place in the city foil meet during the first Week of April. Before the match, not much hope Was rendered toward Bulldog chances, in- asmuch as the mainstays of last season's third place squad had graduted. The Green and White had not looked very impressive in pre-tournament dual matches and in general not much was expected of the squad. With all these apparently strong factors against them, the foilers took their places in April for the big meet, the results of which have already been told. The fencers not only turned in a sparkling team performance, but the following day saw Syl Wiley and Stu Sullivan take second and fifth place, respectively, in the individual contest. A major letter was awarded Wiley for his splendid Work, and Sullivan, George Black, and Richard Smith received minor letters. With the entire squad back for next year's contests, dreams of a city championship seem certain to become a reality. ROW l: Rockwell, Forslund, Black, Lee, Moss. Page ll8 Baseball As of this writing, the Senn baseball team was about to take the field against Lake View in the closing game of the first round, a game which undoubtedly Went a long way in the shaping of the Bulldogs' season record. The team started the season off with a bang by winning its first five North Section encounters. Sullivan, Taft, Schurz, Roosevelt, and Waller were the teams which fell as victims to this early uprising of the Bulldogs. Only one other team, Amundsen, could boast of an undefeated status at this stage and the Vikings then met the Green and White in one of the most tense games of the year. Trailing 2'-l, Arnundsen tallied twice in the seventh to whip a heartbroken Senn squad 3-2 and thus take over first place in the league standings. The Techmen of Lane were the next opponents of the Bulldogs and the local lads dropped this tilt by an 8-4 count. The second place Von Steuben nine sent Senn reeling to its third straight setback, downing our boys 5-l. Thus the stage was set for the aforementioned Lake View game, Lake View having lost only two games thus far. The second round of play may have proved different since the Bulldogs were still open for one of the two playoff berths. The team itself was composed of a number of veterans, Bob Prudon heading the list in his fourth year of competition as a stellar infielder and hitter. Lefty Herron commanded the mound staff by turning in several fine performances. Lueders, Vandover, Anderson, Walters, McDonnell, and Sachnoff rounded off the well balanced team. f I A x:'.w,, ROW 1: Vandover, Garner, Ohman, Herron, Waters, Anderson, Barnett.
