THROUGH OUR DAILY LIFE at Senn we are infused with a spirit of Loyalty to our country and to our school. STUDENTS AND FACULTY alike purchased War Stamps and Bonds so that the Treasury Flag flies over our school. The Red Cross Drive was overwhelmingly successful which illustrates cooperation' and a regard for human relationship. b DAVID M. JANUARY CLASS, 1943 january classes although diminutive in sive have always overcome this deficiency by their overwhelming vivaciousness and personality. The january class of 1943 has proved to be no exception. With students such as President George Huys, Vice-President Allene Ander- son, Secretary Joanne Newton, Treasurer Eugene johnson, and Marshal judge Martin Daneman occupying executive positions, the class did not fail to live up to a high standard. Throughout the entire semester the ever active class participated in school wartime activities, giving much to an all-out effort. The entire class gathered in the svelte Marine Dining Room of the Edge- water Beach Hotel on Thursday, january 28, where the efforts of the Luncheon Co-chairmen Juanita Glover and George Felt were rewarded by the satisfaction and pleasure derived from the gala affair. Not to be outdone by these hard- working seniors, Alumni Chairman Mary jane Friberg successfully completed duties of her position. Not a little credit belongs to two outstanding behind-the-lines figures, Dr. Zimmerman, Class Adviser, and Principal Davidson for sound advice and understanding cooperation. Y, ,K ,f1ffEif1:ZQL7, -4?57 IAC., .,4iL5Z:Z::2L,Pu JUNE CLASS, 1943 TT Striving to leave Senn with memories of a hard working War Effort group, the class of june, 1943, reached its goal and went over the top. Waiting for the results of the first big event of the semester, the class elections, put candidates in a tense mood. When the suspense was over victoriously emerging was popular Humphrey Sullivan as president. Ably aiding him in their oliices were Vice-President Kenneth Gunderson, Secretary Rosemary Kelly, and Treasurer Charles Adler. The Luncheon, Prom, and Alumni chairmen were respectively Dorothy Boze, Marion Smith, and Clare Webster. Keeping order efficiently were Marshal judges Bill Messner and Bianca Zwang. Swinging and swaying to the music of Lew Diamond and his orchestra on a lovely june evening, soft lights above, the scent of flowers in the air- these dramatic words in no way underestimate the success of the Prom at the Medinah Club on june 17. That long awaited june 24 found graduates at the Orrington Hotel enjoying the Senior Luncheon, and that night with diplomas in hand, the members left Senn to continue a splendid record. Utmost appreciation goes to Principal Davidson and Senior Adviser Dr. Zimmerman for their helpfulness and cooperation. The four years at Senn will always remain a vivid picture in the memories of this superb class. Page Thi:-ry-One W5 CW ' CI':llg,?1CABELMANN 3 SYLVIA' ABERG aj IB Room Secretary. Ui CK , if ALL SCHOOL COUNCIL With full realization of the strenuous problems and tasks which faced Senn, the All School Council of 19-42 - 1943 took the war-time responsibilities in stride and did a spectacular job. One hundred and fifty strong they worked together harmoniously. Comprising the council were the officers of the five classes, the 4A luncheon, alumni, and prom committees, three hard working Marshal judges, and of course all the council delegates, and forever lending a helping hand and pre- siding over all meetings was the principal, Mr. Davidson, who deserves all appreciation for his co-operation. The main activity was the tremendous War Bond and Stamp Drive. Work- ing hard to attain Sennis goal of a Treasury Flag, the council sponsored drives and sold stamps and bonds through the room delegates, each division striving to live up to its own separate quota. Cakes-cakes-everywhere! Sennites saw cakes when they came on a frosty winter morning, each with a warm glow in his heart when he thought of some serviceman eating a large piece of his chocolate layer cake permeated through his mind. Enthusiastically supporting this special cake drive for the Service Men's Center, the council triumphantly sent over three thousand cakes to the Center on behalf of Senn's patriotic students. The P.-T.A.'s already large membership benefitted by the gallant efforts of the representatives in the drive for new members. This shows they have additional good traits in the art of salesmanship. Keeping up the high standards in Red Cross contributions, Senn went over the top again in two drives with a grand total of over a thousand dollars. Participating in no small way, the council offered tireless efforts to the cause, and what a cause it is. The Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons played host to charitable work of many sorts. The Children's Aid Society added to its fund for articles of clothing Senn's contribution, which was by no means a small amount. With traditional Christmas spirit, students opened their hearts and purses to make Senn's annual fund for baskets of food and goodies, and milk for needy families, one of the biggest ever had. Mothers cautioned their children to take that old orange squeezer and those keys to the Senn scrap drive when it was in full swing. Thorndale Avenue proudly displayed a pile tha-a-t high and when the men came to take it away there were grins a mile wide on each councilites face. In due respect, these patriotic Sennites surely deserve all credit for their superb war-time accomplishments. Accompanied by large amounts of groaning and hair-tearing, Editor-in-Chief Dorothy Boze, shouldering supervision and many headaches because of paper and copper priorities, took her responsibilities in stride and did a wonderful job on this better than ever War Effort Annual. Added laurels should be given to Assistant Editor Natalie Olin who pasted and clipped after everyone had left Senn's dear portals and most keys had turned in their locks. Biography Editors janet Halprin and Naomi Maltz and ldentifications Editor joelyn Saltzman absorbed their share of aspirins before the year was over. Much credit for artistic sections should be handed on a silver platter to Mr. Robertson and his student assistants, Robert Guedtner, Peter Pagratis, Gene Hunter, Irwin Clyman and Ralph Kocher who mounted and mounted and mounted some more. As the spectacular events of athletic games unfold before your eyes, think of energetic Sports Editor Dick Spector and staffites, Ed Blumenfeld, Leonard Bressler, Mel Bressler, Ted Wedell, Russ Dudley, and Charles Ziesk who recorded lasting evidence of Senn's great athletic prowess. Graduates came in contact with the Business Staff, ably headed by jean Dingle, when they settled their publication debts in miclwinter. Financial problems were taken care of in a superior way by this efficient girl, appropriately nicknamed Jean jingle. Other journalists who assisted on the production line were Al Polikoff, joe Bleeden, Dick Goodman, Rayna Goldberg, Doris Baum, jack Leadinghouse, and Elaine Martinson. Under the guidance of Miss Corcoran whose continuous helping hand and aid was always ready the staff and all concerned worked towards their high goal and even surpassed all expectations. On the pages of this Annual relive the momentous occasions of the tre- mendous War Effort program conducted by Sennites who have eagerly en- deavored to do all in their power towards their part in aiding the War Effort. Additional thanks go to Principal Davidson for his close cooperation and to Miss Kunz, Senn Treasurer, for her assistance in financial ways. As a start the staff voted to change the Hag to a war theme-thus V for Victory and Buy War Stamps became the slogan for the 1942-43 issues. Vigorously supporting every project aiding and dealing with the War Effort, the Senn News put its heart and soul into publicizing the Red Cross Drives in which Senn went over the top twice, once during the fall semester and again in the spring. Sennites were spurred on and kept informed of the progress of the Metal Drive by the Senn News. Keeping up with their never to be outdone policy, Sennites again did their all to come out the city winner in the drive for old radios to be used for training radio-men in the services. The Cake Drive, held on March 19, ended with a contribution of 3,018 cakes for the Service Men s Center from patriotic Sennites. All these drives were fully supported by the Senn News, but the drive that received constant publicity was the sale of War Stamps and Bonds. An issue of the Senn News never went to bed without urging loyal Sennites to support their country by buying War Stamps. Page Sixty-Nine ? 7 RUTH C. The Victory Edition revealed Senn's part in the War Effort and the enthusiastic support of the whole student body and faculty. Keeping the student body informed of former Sennites now in Uncle Same's armed forces, Sennites in Service became a permanent column. Editor-in-Chief Louise De Caluwe, rated among its greatest editors, was assisted by Helen Buechler and Edith Wambach as Assistant Editors in get- ting out the Spring issues. Taking care of the humor end of the paper were Popi Elson, Lolajean Kabrine, Rochelle Kallis, Marion Patton, and Arlene Reutlinger. News Editor Doris Baum deserves a big round of applause for all her help. Ted Wedell and Russell Dudley covered all Senn sports events in fulfilling their positions as Sports Editors. Assisting them was Dick Spector. The nucleus of every paper is its business staff and the Senn News is no exception. Business Managers Dorette Goerk and Florence Fisch were re- sponsible for the financial success of the Senn News. Bob Satterfield ably took care of money matters during the fall semester. The fall staff was headed by Ruth Olson, Vivian johnson, and june Mack as Editors-in-Chief and Dolores Posey, Elaine Markovitz, and Arline Wolfe as Assistant Editors, with Irene Murphy as Feature Co-Editor. The Bulldog Edition was one of the feature papers of this staff. This was printed before the Senn-Lane football game, and gave the student body the lowdown on their ever popular Bulldogs. Why it's the Senn Players who are responsible for the thrills and chills, adventure and romance that you see on the Senn stage. They look like harmless students, donit they? But they have a past! During the fall semester they murdered a man-right before our eyes in The House Without a Key, and then called in Charlie Chan to find who done it. In the spring semester one of their members donned a mask and kidnapped not only Monsieur Orsanelli but the heart of sweet Laurette in The Purple Mask. In their spare time they called back from beyond the grave a no less famous personage than the Bard of Avon-Master Shakespeare himself, and had him blow us up with his slanguagen in Shakespeare Streamlined. But just to prove that they were really right guys, they dug down deep in their pockets and came up with checks for the Red Cross, Russian War Relief, Chinese War Relief, and Greek War Relief. This wasn't money from the plays-but from their hearts. Their director is not only the stage coach of the group but like the old lady who lived in a shoe - Page Seventy-Two - CKQQ, She has so many Players 'RQ- ' She doesn't know what to do She gave them some Shakespeare ss K She gave them some Shaw 'p On December 9 and 11 and May 19 and 21. ' Players is a social as well as a dramatics group. Twice yearly they have a - Parents, Tea where good cheer, good fellowship, and good food abound. These little get-to-gethers help foster a deeper bond of understanding between stu- dent, teacher, and parent. At the end of each semester there is a Worker-Player Parents' Tea at which time those coveted dramatics letters are handed out to those Workers and Players who have proven themselves worthy in the eyes of their fellow classmates. Sincerity is the watchword of the group, and because of this al ayers, both old and new, blend into one compact group to carry on the fine ndards and traditions of those who have gone before. That is a question that many of the blissfully ignorant have asked and are asking. Workers are that unobtrusive, self- effacing group that makes the machinery click backstage. For example, that super-effective lighting that chased chills down our spines in The House Without a Key was a Workers' job. Add to this a list of endless tasks such as setting the stage for all assemblies, concerts, festivals, Christmas plays, special meetings, Annual pictures, Honor Society, Memorial and Graduation days. Also in their line are such ingenious and indigestible properties as plaster cookies, brown velvet hams that require no ration stamps and effective wooden legs that really work! Workers are the talented group that forms the Art section of the Dram- atics department. They work under the direction of Miss Doniat. Student assistant for the fall semester was Virginia Kunish, for the spring, Martha Havey and Frances Warda. Stage Managers were Forest Finley in the fall, Mary Sheehan and Franklin Swig in the spring. The romantic comedy-drama The Purple Mask went over big in May, and one of the most important factors in its success was the excellent props, scenery and costumes made by the Workers. In March of the spring semester Sennites had a taste of culture when Cap- tain Ostergren gave his semi-annual Band Concert. That symmetrical seating arrangement was due to the feverish efforts of the Workers. We'd say this was a red-letter year, wouldn't you? Page Sevenly-Four MARSHALS Under the capable supervision of Mr. Baller the Marshals continued to rule Senn for another semester. With the cooperation of the Student Court just punishment was administered to all school offenders by the elected judges. The back-bone of this organization is the officers, appointed to rank by displaying ability, leadership, and initiative. Colonel Frank Miller deserves much credit for its smooth function. His direction was willingly accepted by all marshals, as well as the assistance of Lieutenant-Colonel Marvin Don- nine and Major Executive Henry Anderson whose duties were to assist in court and to regulate fire and air raid drills. But the brunt of the work was borne by Majors Len Adler, Ben Blackman, Don O'Donnell, Ed Miner, Lowell Weissman, and Tom Vesa. Each was the head of one school period every day, giving offenses to students and in- structing their marshals. Assisting the Majors were Captains Charles Adler, Bob Eisen, Henry Coelln, james jones, Mitchell Siskin, and Bill McHugh. Their jobs included keeping the files of offenses in order, and assisting in office procedure. Lieutenants Bernard Baum, Norbert Jacker and Dick Fisk were the leaders of the floors during each period. Keeping their floors in order and checking attendance were their duties. Officers who graduated in january were Colonel Norman Kahn, Lieutenant- Colonel Bob Kraft, and Majors Stewart Newman, Herb Alpert and Bill Halper. Coach Friker, former Adviser, was unable to continue in his position this semester due to the pressure of his physical education program. ROW 1: Adler, Donine, Miller, Mr. Baller, Anderson, Miner. SENN ROTC With their country facing the worst crisis in its history, the cadets and officers of the Senn ROTC trained with more determination than ever to prepare themselves for future service of their country. The ROTC began the year in September, 1942, under military instructors, Sgt. Alfred Fulton, who was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant and transferred to Fort Custer, and Sgt. Patrick McNamara. The position vacated by Lt. Fulton was ably Iilled by the present military instructor, Sgt. N. Siefert. Aided by the ideas brought by the new military instructors and the old traditions of the ROTC, the Senn military unit has reached a new high in efficiency. Many changes were made in the regiment to gear it to war-time speed. More emphasis was placed on tactics, first aid, scouting and patrolling, and other subjects which would train the cadets for field duty. In the fall semester of 1942, the Senn ROTC was led by Lt. Col. Russell Neff, who is one of the few cadets in the history of the regiment to hold that rank in his 4B semester. Under his direction the unit developed its wartime program and laid the groundwork for the Federal Inspection semester. Cadets of the ROTC contributed freely of their time and effort in rendering service to the school. Many cadets gave up part of their lunch period to serve on the Lunch Room Guards, to help Senn to have a clean, well-kept lunchroom. The ROTC furnished guards at football games and ushers at many other school functions. Page Seventy-Nine COMPANY A But the service of which the ROTC is most proud is the aid given to the Scrap Drive in the fall. The whole regiment was mobilized and the neighbor- hood for blocks around the school was canvassed for scrap metal. The hun- dreds of pounds of scrap brought in by the ROTC was a great factor in the success of the drive. The highlights of the social season for the ROTC during the fall were the Non-Commissioned Officers' Dinner Dance, the first of its kind ever held, and the Annual Officers, Dinner Dance. The Non-Coms Dance was held at American Legion Hall and proved to be an outstanding success. Planning the dance were Committee Chairman Art Sheridan, Robert O'Connor, Wil- liam Karp, and John Leengran. The Officers' Dinner Dance last September was held at the Bismarck Hotel and surpassed the expectations of those who attended. On the dance committee were Lt. Col. Russell Neff, Honorary Chair- man, Capt. Thomas Vesa, Chairman, 1st Lt. Mitchell Siskin, 2nd Lt. Paul Gilmartin, and 2nd Lt. Steven Gittler. Page Eigbly COMPANY B For outstanding work during the fall semester with the ROTC the fol- lowing cadets were awarded medals: Major Edward Bowman, Officers' Effici- ency Medal, lst Sgt. Art Sheridan, Non-Commissioned Officers, Efficiency Medal, Capt. David Blumenthal, Band Officers' Efficiency Medal, Cadets Norman Dresden, Harold Wiley, William Erickson, Personal Appearance Medals, Sgt. George Andrews, Recruiting Medal, Capt. Norval Anderson, Assistant to Supply Officer 5 and Cpl. Mitchell Edelson, Assistant to Supply Officer. Early in the fall semester the best drilled cadets in the regiment were chosen and organized into the Exhibition Platoon. The Platoon practiced every day after school until it attained perfection. It was entered in the Crack Platoon Competition this spring. The Crack Platoon was commanded by Capt. Robert Brosman and supervised by Lt. Col. Russell Neff and Lt. Col. Edward Bowman. One of the highest honors any ROTC cadet in the city can attain was earned by one of the outstanding officers, Major Edward Bowman, this semester. He was chosen by a group of high-ranking army officers to serve on the Cdt. Corps Staff and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Lt. Col. Bowman by this appointment was made second-in-command of the 11,000 ROTC cadets in Chicago. This honor to Lt. Col. Bowman is not only a Page Eighty-Two COMPANY D l credit to him but shows the caliber of the cadets that Senn is training. This semester as in previous years the ROTC had one of the outstanding social events held by a Senn group, the Officers' Dinner Dance. The officers and their guests dined and danced at the Edgewater Beach Hotel and the affair proved to be a great success. The Chairman of the Dance Committee was Lt. Paul Gilmartin. He was assisted by Capt. Paul Ross and Lt. Robert Casey. The ROTC continued its school-service activities in the spring with renewed vigor. Lunch room guards from the ROTC assisted in giving its clean, orderly cafeteria. ROTC guards and ushers at the various school events and the color guard at the assemblies made these activities more enjoyable for those who attended. The Senn ROTC Regiment now ranks fourth among the twenty-seven units in Chicago, and fifth in three states. Not satisfied with its high place now, the cadets and officers of the Regiment were aiming for an even higher rank this year and from all appearances they reached their goal. . It was organized four years ago and is under the capable leadership of Miss Greiner, physical education teacher. The officers must be approved by the Military Instructors, Colonel David M. Davidson, and Captain Charles Ostergren, head of the concert band, with- out whose valuable assistance the corps would not be what it is today. The Drum Majorettes meet on the campus while the girls of the Band meet in room 425 every day ninth period. Because of hard work and ambition the members of the corps are able to participate in such school activities as foot- ball games, band concerts, R.O.T.C. reviews and assemblies. At the meetings which are held every other Monday, such social affairs as hay rack parties, swimming parties, and luncheons are arranged for the enjoyment of the members and their friends. Both the Senn and the Lake View Bands were chosen to supply the music for the Annual City Crack Platoon Competition in March. As is traditional the Band gave two concerts, one in the late fall and the other in the early spring, both of which proved to be very successful. One of the highlights of the season was the City Band Contest. Senn Band participated in Class A which consists of bands with a membership from 72-90. In the City Solo Contest Beston Abrams played the bartone saxophone, Earl Steinborn played the drums, and Leo Konitz played the tenor saxophone, the result of which was the grade of S. Marshall Cherkes received a grade of G on the clarinet in the same contest. The well-known Senn Drum Trio also received a grade of S in the Group Contest. Special recognition was tendered the officers who worked so diligently in preparing for the contests, concerts, and the inspections. As part of their duties the officers maintained discipline, the executive work being disposed of by the Band Major, Edward Schwartz. Inspections were held weekly with the Band working on a merit and demerit system. The Band non-commissioned officers, who form the nucleus of the Band, are headed by First Sergeant Roger Fascinato. To keep up the high standard of Senn music, there is a continual flow of musicians who start out in a Be- ginners' band, advance to the junior and to the Military bands, and then to the Concert band. The Military band, which is sixty strong, assists the Concert band in its activities. The student conductor of this band is Staff Sergeant Morton Kaplan. In keeping with its slogan, Music for Victory, the Band drills and marches weekly in preparation for the Annual Federal Inspection. Completely out- fitted in ROTC uniforms the organization lent color and rhythm to the event. Taking part in the parades downtown the Band marched with other schools on Americanism Day, Army Day, Armistice Day, and Memorial Day. These parades are a prelude to the day when Senn band will participate in the triumphal victory parade. These days also gave the band a chance to display its musical talent and adaptability to any sort of occasion or situation. Senn has the finest instruments and one of the best musical libraries in the country because of the untiring efforts of the Band Parents' Association. The Association gave two open dances and a box-social to raise money for the Band. With the efforts of the Band Parents' Association behind the Band it is bound to become one of the country's best. SEN N MIXED CHORUS Senn Mixed Chorus this year contributed much to the war effort. The school used the Chorus as a morale builder and it has been called on many occasions for that purpose. The first engagement for the year was at the Jamieson Grammar School where the group sang for the P.T.A. The Chorus at that time was under the direction of Miss Byrne who retired in December after many years of fine service. After the retirement of Miss Byrne, the Chorus was under the able direction of Miss Dorothy Shea. Under her direction the choir participated in many new activities. The Christmas Pageant conducted for all assemblies under the direction of Miss Shea and Miss Skillen presented a beautiful program with glorious music. Theresa Austin and Richard Ortner sang Cantique de Noel. The following day the choir, vested in their green robes, caroled through Senn corridors, bringing the realization of a sacred peace. In january the choir under the direction of Miss Shea took second place in the choral contest at Lane. The group sang the beautiful Ave Maria and How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place by Brahms. Among the most important engagements was the concert given by the choir and orchestra in january. This gala event was climaxed when the Ensemble, of which the choir is rightfully proud, sang Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. On March 29 the ensemble was chosen to appear on the High School Studio Party, where they sang Night and Day by Porter and American Lullaby and Summer Time. Page Eighty-Eight The unforgetable social affair was in March when the Chorus sponsored the Saint Patrick's Day Dance in the Michigan Room of the Edgewater Beach Hotel. The organizers included Mary Assimos, Choir Chairman, Charlotte Tulchin, Dance Chairman, jean Auld, Social Chairman, Beverly Pedersen, Ticket Chairman, and Elaine Hatten and Bianca Zwang, Publicity Agents. The three leading artists for the group were Robert Mandel, Patricia Seford, and Sonia Carthum. On Pan American Day the Choir sang Begin the Beguine for all four class assemblies at the Spanish Program. That same day the Choir sang for the P.T.A. meeting. This engagement featured the fine Londonderry Air by Cherryman. In june the entire Choir appeared on the High School Studio Party. On this program the Choir sang Tschaikowsky's famous Andante, It Ain't Neces- sarily So, and Sleeper's Avalon. The Choir participated in the Annual Spring Music Festival. This was almost their last but finest program. They sang such songs as None But the Lonely Heart by Tschaikowsky and It Ain't Necessarily So, by Gershwin. Among the exceptionally hard working members of the Choir were Helen Bargfeld, Treasurer, Marge Cameron, Secretary, Kevin O'Malley, Robe Chair- man g and jean Auld, Pianist, who has been donating her service to the Choir for more than three years. SENN ORCHESTRA Senn Orchestra, which has been growing steadily in the last year both with respect to numbers and ability, has finally blossomed forth a full grown and able member of the Senn music department and a functional part of Senn High School. Under the inspired leadership of Mr. Gomberg, who incident- ally took charge only a little more than a year ago, the Orchestra won its spurs with a well earned rating of S in the city-wide music contest. This rating, which was won in stiff competition with other music groups from all parts of the city, attests to the determination with which the members have striven to build up a really fine aggregation, and all Senn may be proud of the fact that they have achieved their goal in such a glorious manner. Aside from this outstanding performance, the Orchestra gave its annual concert on the night of january 22 in Senn Hall. The show was a huge success and did much to enhance the reputation. The group also performed for the Band and Orchestra Parents' Association at Green Briar Field House, added luster to the fall play, The House Without a Key, and helped send the january graduates off with a warm feeling for their alma mater. The Orchestra did its part in making the annual music festival a gala event, while preparing to annex another superior rating in the next music contest. With such a splendid showing for its last year of operation, the Orchestra is sure to grow larger and Senn can see great things ahead for this up-and-coming organization. Congratulations to Mr. Gomberg and his players on a flne year's work. Senn is looking forward to an even better year during which the Orchestra will really make a name for itself. Page Nirzefy GIRLS' CHORUS Senn Girls' Chorus, numbering more than fifty selected soprano and alto voices, rehearse daily in room 340 under the direction of their ambitious leader, Miss Cameron. This is the f1fth year of the organization and the girls are satisfied that they have accomplished something new each semester, even though the mem- bership represents new talent that carries on the high standard necessary for public performance. The high point of this year's work was a request program of fine songs for WMAQ High School Studio Party, in the Merchandise Mart, Chicago. This was a unique and thrilling experience. The radio audience gave these talented singers applause, and praise was their reward from those who heard them over the air. The girls have been invited to broadcast again over the same station. There were several other programs to the girls' credit, the Spring Festival being the annual event, and the very enjoyable Senn Parent-Teacher Associa- tion request repertoire of gay and mirthful songs. The officers of this hard-working singing group help in many ways to take care of its interests. The officers are: President Dorothy Fischer, Vice-Presi- dent Lois Oliver, Secretary Charleen Fleig, Treasurer Darlene Poundstone, Librarian Beverly Kramer. The talented accompanist for all occasions is june Lee Klingelhoefer, who is very popular with the girls, and whose serious application to her responsi- bility at rehearsals contributes much to the finished ensemble work of the Chorus. The theme selected for this year's program was Student Service. The Parent-Teacher Association proudly joined with the ROTC in plans to secure the Senn Service Flag. Medal awards to the ROTC and awards to the out- standing students were made again this year. Cabinets were provided for the dramatic department. The efforts of this association were also given to ob- tain a nathletic field west of Senn High. Cooperation with Miss Cavanagh afforded the opportunity for service to the school. Dues and ways and means projects balanced the budget for this year. Club shortly after Pearl Harbor and the members have been working diligently towards this goal ever since. Because of the large number of students interested in International Rela- tions and problems concerning the war, this year the club was divided into two sections, meeting Mondays and Thursdays. Extensive work with the Red Cross is the keynote of the activities, as the I. R. with the combined efforts of the junior Red' Cross headed by Miss Cain assisted in the sponsorship of the drive for the record-breaking purchase of Senn Blood Donor Ambulance last spring. I. R. also sponsored short talks on behalf of the Red Cross for the current drive. The semester trip to Northwestern University was thoroughly enjoyed by all who were present. I. R. members had the pleasure of hearing Professor Franklin D. Scott of the History department speak on future world organiza- tion and of touring the campus and meeting Northwestern's I. R. Club officers. The good neighbor policy was furthered, especially since one of its mem- bers, Lolajean Kabrine, won first prize in the state for her essay on What Pan-Americanism Means to My Country. The Brazilian Consulate was enter- tained at a luncheon in the Senn Pump Room last year, thus providing oppor- tunity for further diplomatic relationships. Many remember Estelle Sager, who won the midwest prize from eleven states when she took the League of Nations' examination. Last year Patsy Paley's test was entered in the country-wide contest. Panel discussions before the Senn P.T.A. and elementary school groups on future world organization, and conferences at the American Council Institute of Pacific Relations on problems in the Far East have also helped for better understanding of the postwar problems. The spring season played host to many activities. In March many students entered the League of Nations Contest with favorable results, and in May a group appeared on the Young America Answers program over station WBBM. This quiz show deals with questions about youths' work on the home and battle front. The I. R. Club eagerly participated in the new war time vocabulary reading program and wrote papers on the problems facing youth in war time for the Pi Lambda Theta panel discussion. Miss Hafemann is doing grand work with the International Relations Club and is very well liked by all students. At that time the name Selenium Nitrides was adopted and the club has carried that name to the present time. The purpose of the club is to develop a general interest in chemistry. Due to the present war the club tried to perform experiments and to give talks that were useful to the War Effort. Some of these have been the testing of soil and fertilizers, the purification of water with bromine, the preparation of sulphuric acid and luminescent chemicals. Members of the club have also demonstrated experiments with antiseptics, fuels, lubricants and gases. What happens to the tin cans which are being collected was demonstrated by show- ing the de-tinning process. After reading about taking and developing pictures in chemistry class a demonstration was given by one of the members of the club, showing the consecutive steps in the making of a photograph. Groups of three were organ- ized to perform experiments and to give a weekly talk on them. This policy enabled the students to perform experiments that would not normally be required during the regular semester's work. There have been several interesting discussions on the future of and the opportunities in chemistry. New discoveries on what they have meant to the world have also been discussed. The Chemistry Club has worked in close collaboration with other depart- ments of Senn. The auto shop demonstrated the use of the oxy-acetylene torch. The physics department contributed interesting discussions on radio activity, the atom-smasher, and the structure of the atom. The activities of the club also included a trip through the Northwestern Technological Institute. This trip proved very interesting and educational. Because of the popularity of the club, it was found to be more advantageous to divide the organization into two sections. Although these sections meet on different days their work is carried on in close harmony. The club decided to aililiate with the Illinois junior Academy oft-Science. LAWLER The Pitman Club was formed in 1939 to promote scholarship and further the aims, ideals, and standards of Senn commercial graduates. To qualify for membership a student must be taking shorthand and have an average of G or over. During the semester typing and transcription contests were given, a speaker addressed the group, giving some pertinent information in regard to conduct and manners, which was of great benefit. Last semester Mr. Davidson and this semester Miss Lee were the speakers. As for the social side, there was the picnic in the spring and the closing semester party. In regard to the War Effort, the members feel that they are doing their share by preparing themselves to qualify for the constantly increasing demand for good stenographers and secretaries. The club affords an opportunity to increase knowledge of the subject and to ind out how each one stands in com- petition with others. The typing contests were from printed matter for a period of 15 minutes. To be successful one must have a minimum of five errors. In the shorthand contests dictation was given at the rate of 80 and 90 words a minute, and the transcription was timed. A higher degree of accuracy is expected in letters. . Miss HANLEY Senn Art Guild is an organization for all interested and talented students who have completed the Art Survey Course. Weekly meetings and discussion take place in Room 355 under the supervision of Miss Hanley. The program of this group consists of actual art work and related activi- ties such as lectures and tours to places of artistic interest. An outstanding lecture was given by one of Senn's noted teachers, Miss Cavanagh, who in the interest of the good neighbor policy brought and explained the details of her large costume doll collection. A display of over 100 dolls was included in this exhibit. The Art Guild took an active part in the Cake Drive for the Service Men, and produced over fifty posters to advertise this event. Members participated in the War Effort by contributing posters and handi- crafts to stimulate interest in the Red Cross, Bond and Stamp Sales, U.S.O. Events, Conservation of rationed items, aid to the disabled servicemen and promulgation of the American Way of Life through Art. At Christmas time the Art Guild and the entire Art Department had one of the finest exhibits of high school work ever produced. People from all over the city attended the show and tea. The theme of the work was the Four Freedoms. Page One Hundred One SPANISH CLUB ALBERTA SKOLNICK .... ...Vice-Prefident ....... ALBERTA SKOLNICK ROSEMARY PAQUET. .. ..... Secretary .... .... Some typical meetings dealt with a movie entitled Children of Mexico, a techni-color taken by Miss Cain, a Guatamalean Trip, a fiesta, a Mexican Christmas Party during which typical South American games were played with hand-painted Mexican Christmas cards as prizes. Some meetings featured talks by students who had lived in South America. The annual Pan-American Day assembly was sponsored by the club. At least two programs were devoted to singing Spanish songs and one to a play given in Spanish by members of Miss Gill's classes. The club has tried to show the Senn students the lives and ideas of the people of the other America. The paid memberships for the year totaled one hundred students. SGAA numbers this semester about 70 girls. Those interested in team games meet once a week during the activity periods for round robin tourna- ments. This is a departure from the regular after school games, which were dispensed with this year because of the heavier gym program. Social events of the fall semester consisted of a mass meeting, two supper hikes at Caldwell Woods, a roller skating party, a treasure hunt, the breakfast, and a dance. The events of the spring semester were similar except that the season ended with a city-wide luncheon at the Morrison Hotel. The members of the Board of Control in the fall were Kay O'Shea, Vivian Cohn, Vivian Hall, Georgia Karalis, Betty Jenks, Alberta Hermansen, Gloria Wilkinson, Genevieve Gordinier, Elaine Morey, Nancy McFarland, Harriet Baker. In the spring Kay O'Shea, Bernice Goldstick, Jean Werner, Jean Bolan, Marion Ball, Alice Wyers, Florence Swanson, Suzanne Reitz, Helen Olsher, Beverly Golbraith, and Lois Richardson were chosen. HAROLD Some years ago a need was felt for the organization of an advanced swim- ming group, one that would promote an interest in swimming among the girls at Senn. The group, known as the Nereids, has functioned since then and has-enjoyed the companionship and activity that the club afforded. This past year a new activity was added to the work of the groups that meet the eighth and ninth periods on Monday, and the fourth period on Friday. Synchronized swimming, or rhythmic swimming to music, an activity that has been finding favor among swimming groups all over the country, became popular. Swimming various strokes to music, forming figures, and perform- ing stunts of various kinds is interesting as well as relaxing. Girls from the Nereids group are used to assist the swimming teachers in regular classes and prove to be very helpful. This year they are helping to promote the new war program of swimming activity, including practice in floating, treading water, swimming side, breast and back stroke for endurance purposes, swimming under water, and jumping in without submerging completely. The requirement for the advanced class is the success- ful completion of one semester of beginning fencing. Beginning fencing includes the fundamentals of footwork, simple defense and offense, terminology and rules. Advanced fencers are taught more ad- vanced technique and procedure and rules for bouts. A tournament is usually held in the advanced class during the last part of the semester. Lucille Hyatt, Rosemary Kelly, Betty Miller, Alberta Skolnick, Charlotte Lennes, and Bianca Zwang are in their third semester of fencing. FOOTBALL Win or lose, Senn football teams have acquired a local reputation of being rough and tough. Let it not be said that the 1942 gang of grid-men departed from tradition. Under the able guidance of Coach Dow the team gained third place in the cut-throat competition of the north side. Not until the waning days of autumn had it definitely lost its chance of a second consecutive sectional title. After splitting two practice games the team was ready for the new wartime schedule consisting of six league games. The Dowmen celebrated the open- ing of the regular season by a 33-0 victory over Waller. Next Saturday the Bulldogs were pitted against the pre-season favorite, Schurz. In an all-out effort Senn effectively squelched further title rumors being emanated from the near west side by virtue of a 24-7 conquest. A weak Lake View team was taken in stride 39-13 but some difficulty was encountered in the Sullivan game. Two touchdowns in the last quarter broke the deadlock and Senn hung up a 13-0 victory. By this time a football title was being considered seriously by loyal Sennites. However, one of those upsets commonly encountered when competition is stiff was suffered by the Green and White squad against Amund- sen. The Vikings, playing superlative heads-up football gained a 15-9 deci- sion. Taft, a yearling in football affairs, clinched the title a few hours later. Page One Hundred Twelve Yet there remained on the Bulldog calendar a contest with Lane. This traditionally hard fought game is always a thriller whether a football title is at stake or not. A throng of 5500 gathered at Lane Stadium and witnessed a battle royal. Senn lost 13-9, but not without a iight. The game was a heart- breaker for Senn fans. The season was officially terminated by a 13-13 dead- lock with Loyola on Thanksgiving Day at the latter's stadium. Football letters were awarded at a special athletic demonstration early in December. The following were awarded major letters: Dave Barnett, Bob Carlson, Ralph Casey, joe Cason, Herb Garbrecht, Bill Hallquist, Bob Heck- meck, George Huys, Dave Katz, Bob Kietzman, George Loescher, Oscar Lotka, Gerald Metcalfe, jim Moran, Frank Ockerlund, Yale Ogron, jerry Sarges, jack Shirley, Dorr Simer, Dick Stull, Dick Snow, Bob Myers and Chuck Wright. Minor letters were presented to Russ Anderson, Mack Fairbanks, George Felt, Herb Haberstroh, Bill McHugh, Bob Silverman and Ed Wood. The veteran Green and White team elected Bob Myers, the hard plunging and versatile full back, Honorary Captain at the season's end and nominated Quarterback Dick Stull, a brilliant field general and capable passer as the most valuable player. End Frank Ockerlund was proclaimed the squads ablest blocker. He was honored with the Dr. Timmons award, which is presented annually for that achievement. It is also interesting to note that fullback Bob Myers and Guard Chuck Wright were almost unanimous choices on North Section All Star Teams. Head Coach Fd Dow and Line Coach john Wantuch deserve much credit for their line work. The managerial staff of Lonquist, Charly Ellin, jim Kas- sube and George McDonnell also deserve commendation. 4-? --. Page One Hzuzrfred Folzrfeezz SENIOR BASKETBALL A youthful but ambitious group of youngsters composed the Senn Senior basketball squad this season, and although the team finished eighth in the North Section standings with but three wins to its credit, a great deal of experience was harvested. Raw recruits were converted into veterans and by next season the Seniors should possess a wily, coordinated five to pace the hardwoods. A brief resume of the season follows. The Seniors encountered their first defeat when they journeyed to Waller High and were slighted 40-39. Everything was in hand until the final 60 seconds when Waller shredded the net with three rapid fire field goals, the last shot swishing simultaneously with the gun. At Lane Tech the Bulldogs were handed their second defeat, 32-19, by a very able Indian five. The event- ual North Section champions and city finalists, the Amundsen Vikings, ex- perienced the chills in the first half of their tussle with Senn, but after recess turned the game into a 47-28 rout. Roosevelt and Steinmetz added two links to the Bulldog chain of defeats to conclude the fall semester, the local lads still sought their first victory. With the commencement of the latter half of the season the Green and White cagers began to roll. First victim of the revived Bulldogs was Taft, which saw victory fade in the waning minutes when Jack Wulf connected on a hook shot. Bob Olander and Andy Zuccarello contributed the bulk of Senn points. Next, Von Steuben fell prey to the boys of Green and White, 25-22. Humphrey Sullivan's one-handed shot shoved Senn into the lead with less than a minute to play, while Bob Gilbertson virtually ended the affair with a bucket a few seconds later. In the ensuing game Senn achieved its first vic- tory of the year on foreign courts by whipping Sullivan 40-39. Pete Simone's two last minute free shots were a deciding factor. Possessing a three game winning streak the Seniors were finally tripped, losing to Schurz in a 33-32 heartbreaker. The season was concluded at home with Lake View on the heavy end of a 46-39 count. The first captain of the Senn squad was veteran jack Comfere, who gradu- ated in February and incidently continued as a top flight cager on a fine Kala- mazoo team. Soon after Comferels graduation Bob Olander took the reins and set an example by counting 87 points, high for the team. Aside from Fred Oscarson, who was a February graduate, and Peter Simone, Harvey Fenston and Humphrey Sullivan the entire team will return next year. Reappearing for but a half year will be Bob Olander. In addition there will be Andy Zuccarello, Jack Wulf, john Pitou, Forrest Finley, Bob Gilbertson, and Bob David. The average height of these fellows scrapes 6 feet 1 inch. Better days lie ahead for the Senn senior live. Page One Hundred Fifzeen JUNIOR BASKETBALL A scrappy junior basketball team composed almost entirely of third year men improved itself greatly in the latter part of the season and at the end was boasting a .500 average with a five and five won-lost record. Consider- ing the caliber of the North Section competition, this percentage represents the satisfactory showing the team attained. The team faired better at Senn than it did away from home, winning four and losing two here while winning one and dropping three on the road. The Green and White opened the season with two straight defeats by strong teams, Waller and Lane. Waller turned out to be section champs so it is easy to understand how the Bulldogs dropped that one. The Lane game was a real thriller and it was only after a brilliant battle that our boys suffered their 25-24 setback. The team then came back to Senn to play its first home game with Amundsen. The Green and White were too superior for the Vik- ings and trounced them by a score of 41-28. The traveling jinx hit them again at this point and the boys were beaten by their host, Roosevelt, 36-29 in a real heartbreaker. Only in the last few minutes of play did the Rough Riders gain their slight advantage. The Bull- dogs then quickly snapped back to winning form, taking two in a row from Taft and Steinmetz. It was evident from the beginning of both games that Senn would hold the upper hand in each contest. The Bulldogs returned home and lost their first game here to Von Steuben, 33-22. It was after this game that Sullivan came to Senn. Sullivan was in first place at that time and were heavy favorites to continue their march. But Senn was not downhearted and saw only greater glory in the defeat of their arch rivals. Thus it was that for three fast quarters the Senn squad outplayed and outfought the opposition and were well on their way to victory when the stalwart pair of guards, Red Sullivan and Ernie Couture, attained four personal fouls and were forced from the game. With no one to check the enemy drives, the Bulldogs fell apart and were trampled 50-37. This loss, though naturally disappointing, failed to discourage the boys but rather provided them with newly found determination. With this refreshed outlook they met Schurz and Lake View and in short order defeated them both, Schurz by a score of 30-26 and Lake View 42-40 in the closest contest of the year. The Bulldogs, though they lost as many games as they won, were always a threat to North Section leaders and with five or six starters returning, Senn junior followers look forward to next season. Individual scoring honors were taken by Buzz Murphy with 69 points, with Ernie Couture a close second with 63. Couture's outstanding defensive work must also be noted for he was chiefly responsible for the team's fine defensive record which was rated the best in the entire section. Ernie graduates this year after three long seasons of basketball for Senn and with his departure goes one of the finest players and all-around fellows to don a Senn uniform. U. championship, it was easily seen by all that the 1943 Apparatus team was as fine a group of gymnasts as any Midwestern high school has. had in years. Daily practice second period and workouts at the Y. M. C. A. and different parks after school and on Saturdays were mainly responsible for the splendid physical condition of the boys. Approximately ten hours a week of special- ized gym training carried out over a long period of time was found necessary to keep a gymnast in tip top shape and Senn's boys knew this. When the results of the city meet were in, one could see that they had put this knowledge to good use. They beat their closest rival, Lane Tech, by 156.75 points, which is a tidy margin. The musclemen won in all three divisions, but first place in the champion- ships went to a Lane man. Glen juergensen, who took second place, was closely followed by his team-mates Frank Harris, Roy Roller, and Gay Hughes. Bob Matteo was high point man of the meet and also secured individual honors as an intermediate. Ed Prislinger, Phil Ruck, Dick Spector, jack Austin, john Hoffman and Rune johnson captured the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th positions for themselves in a showing which was so good that only three others were able to place against them. This is a record that Senn can well be proud of. Hubert Zapp and james Bouffard tied for first in the novices, but when a coin was tossed to determine which one would get the first place medal Zapp won. After Bouffard had received second, Coy Woolridge, john O'Heron, Charles Arado and Calvin Lee were announced as winners in the division. Page One Hundred Seventeen ROW 1: Dunkel, Lee, Sullivan, Coach Shaffner, Sullivan, Snyder, Harsted. ROW 2: Wiley, Carney, Black, Vidt, Forslund, Smith, Micon. FENCING The task of rebuilding a championship depleted by graduation is not a simple one, but when this problem faced Fencing Coach Albert Shaffner last fall he immediately began to remedy the situation. Through his splendid efforts and the wholehearted support of the squad personnel, another suc- cessful season was realized by the Senn fencing team. Although a dozen newcomers answered the opening call for candidates, only three veteran members reported back. These three, Humphrey Sullivan, jack Vidt and Arnold Micon, formed the nucleus of the foiling group and served to mold together a worthy unit. Senn was triumphant in the majority of the dual meets that the school scheduled. Their first big event came on March 21 when the Kraft Cup was held at the University of Chicago. Strangely enough, a perennial jinx held over them in the affair remained unscathed and the combined efforts of the four Green and White teams could do no better than to place the school in fourth position. The city meet, held April 10, saw our defending titlists make a supreme effort to retain the crown. The four-man team of Sullivan, Vidt, Micon and novice Sylvian Wiley fenced amiably but fell just short of the point total set up by the experienced Austin and Lane contingents. Sullivan tied for flrst place in the individuals although he was later dropped to the runner-up spot because of the edge in points held over him by Lane's jim McCarthy. TENNIS Senn produced another topflight tennis team this season and at the time of this writing five netmen are about to embark for Champaign to defend the state title the team won in 1941. Now, of course, that tournament is history. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to say that Senn retained rather than produced the team, since four of the five qualifiers are from last year's championship squad. Seeded number one was Captain jerry Evert, one of the most accomplished junior players in the entire country. He was ranked as the City's number one public high school player and only Howie Atwater of New Trier challenges his for that coveted spot in the state. One step behind jerry is sophomore Bob David. Only a sweet 16, southpaw Bob has already proven to be a net- man of superior calibre. In the National Boy's rankings of 1941 he was 11th. In the number three slot was Hubert Rance, better known to his teammates as Burt. He has a notoriously steady game and when paired with David the two formed one of the state's most formidable doubles teams. The second doubles team was composed of veteran Warren Clauson and lanky, Ted Wedell. Coaching the team was Mr. Shaffner and Mr. Leighton, the latter finding time between his baseball sessions to drill the netmen on the court strategy. Although Bob David is the only returning netman, the coaches have already uncovered an abundance of future talent. Likely teammates next year will be Freshman, John Wenrich and Lary Pauly, and junior, David Afton. TRACK Though not as successful as most Green and White track teams, the Junior speedsters managed to take fourth place in the Chicago Public High School Indoor Track Meet. The only point winners in the Senior division were Bob Kanapa and Carl Whitie Sahlin. Kanapa tied for third place in the high jump while Sahlin tied for fifth place in the pole vault. ,Ted Kemp, in his second year as a junior runner, made an impressive showing in the city meet by taking third in the 60-yard dash and fifth in the triple broad jump. Stu Swidler, in his first city meet, took fourth place in the 660-yard run, while Dave Fargo, star of the ice skating and golf teams, tied for fifth in the high jump. The junior team corralled the rest of their points when Ted Kemp, Bernie Berman, Stu Swidler, and Dave Fargo com- bined to place third in the junior relay. Because of their fine work the junior boys who received letters were Ted Kemp, Stu Swidler, Dave Fargo, and Bernie Berman. The Senior boys who received the Green and White emblem were Bob Kanapa and Carl Sahlin. With the close of the indoor season both Senior and Junior divisions of the track team will turn their attention toward the City outdoor meet which is to be held in the latter part of june. The speedsters, with the fine coaching of Mr. Dow and Mr. Klafs are highly hopeful of placing themselves in high standings among high school circles by bringing back to Senn the City Track Championship which the school has long awaited. SWIMMING 1943 proved to be more than just another year for the Senn swimmers as both junior and senior squads captured their last five meets from Loyola, Taft, Sullivan, Steinmetz, and Roosevelt. A good reason for this season's success is because of the large number of boys in both divisions. Both seniors and juniors had eleven swimmers on their respective teams. The first two losses were split among the two, the seniors winning 38-28 and the juniors losing 29-37 to Highland Park. With Fenwick the procedure was reversed with the juniors coming out on top 41-25 and the seniors losing 24-42. The seniors made a clean sweep of the next five meets beating Loyola 40-26, Taft 36-28, Sullivan, 33-29, Steinmetz 42-24, and Roosevelt 34-27. The juniors also came out on top winning from Loyola 48-19, Taft 32-25, Sullivan 35-27, Steinmetz 30-27, and Roosevelt 34-27. Nine letters were awarded this season, four majors going to Harmon Caine, Glen juergensen, Tom Brownell, and Steven Schlafller. Five minors were captured by jack Austin, Robert Deuchar, Burt Ury, Bob Peterson and Don Scherwat. Although swimming is not a major sport at Senn, the team did exceptionally well. Coach Bergmann has many young swimmers in reserve who are eager to be given a chance to swim for the Green and White. There may be reserves but more and more young swimmers are urged to try out for the team. City Championship is always the goal of the team and if more swimmers turn out the goal can be attained. Page One Hundred Twenty-One ROW 1: Coach Bergmann, Fargo, Carlson, Wenzel, Shumacher. ICE SKATIN G Senn is once more the proud possessor of the City junior Ice Skating title. In one of the hottest contested finals that the city has seen in the junior division in many a year Senn's skaters emerged with six first places to decisively beat the second place Lane team. The mile relay was the highlight of the meet and when the cheering had died down Senn had taken all four first places. The relay team was composed of the four regular junior skaters, namely: Dave Fargo, john Carlson, Dick Wenzel and Burt Shumacker. Lane's team was continuously threatening, but close knit cooperation and some admirable skating by Sennls quartet made it strictly a Senn affair. Individual honors rest with john Carlson and Dick Wenzel who won the 440 and 880 respectively. Carlson led the nearest man by a good 30 yards but Wenzel found the going slightly tougher, for one of his opponents had cap- tured the Silver Skates race the same afternoon. The only other honors taken by a Senn individualist was the placing in the 220 by Shumaker. Senn showed its supremacy from the very beginning when it took two firsts and one third in the preliminary. The only bad luck incurred by Senn in the meet was Fargo's fall in the preliminary when he was leading the field. The meet was held at Waveland Park. Senn is looking forward to another championship season for the 'entire Junior team are returning as seniors. Congratulations for this season fellas and good luck for next. BASEBALL , With the season not yet at its mid-point, Sennls Varsity baseball team found itself very near the cellar in North Section competition, although pre-season dopesters had rated the Bulldog's a top-notch aggregation. A better showing in the latter portion of the season is practically assured with the Bulldogs hoping to blast many title conscious teams into oblivion by reversing the scores of their first encounters. Taft, runner-up to Lane in the first round, dealt Senn its first defeat 2-1, although The Eagles were held scoreless by jack Vidt after the opening inning. After suffering a defeat at the hands of Schurz, The Bulldogs routed a strong Roosevelt nine 9-4 for its lone victory thus far. Held to four hits in their previous games the local boys let loose with a Hurry of base hits, the feature of which was Ernie Couturels four for four. Already victim of Amundsen 5-2 the Bulldogs met the perennial north sec- tion champion, Lane. After a wild hrst inning during which three Tech batters crossed the plate, Lane was actually outplayed by a fighting Green and White nine. The final score however read 5-0, the shackling of the lndian's bats being due to Lefty I-Ierron's four hit pitching performance. A one run jinx immediately bit the Bulldog aggregation when both Von Steuben and Lake View emerged victors by a scant tally over the Senn nine. Coach Harry Leighton deserves a good deal of credit in his initial season as baseball coach for his assemblage of a team which should not be judged by its record above. Page One Hundred Twenty-Three 1 SMELL ' AIR AGE Is the class of june, 1943, proud! Not only has it gone all out for Victory but it boasts the outstanding honor of being the first Senn graduating class to have in its midst an aviatrix! This young air-minded lass is Lucille Hyatt, who also has had her name in the lime light as a wonderful swimmer. Lucille's passion for winging runs in the family for her father had been flying secretly for a few months before she decided to surprise him by becoming air-minded. She hopes to join the WAAF's when of age but until then she will be satisfied to enroll in the Civil Air Patrol. With hours of Hying to her credit, Lucille spends her leisure time getting a bird's-eye view of the country from a Piper Cub. Although she is not of age to get a regular pilot license, she has received her student's permit. Not being content just having a terrestrial habitat, Lucille, through her swimming and flying, has duly acquired fins and wings. A popular student with a darling personality is this girl pilot of whom the Senn class of 1943 is so justly proud! Happy Landing, Lucille! Page One Hundred Twenly-F0141 What! No Kitchen Sink?
