A dviser SENN HIGH SCll00L FOREWORD 'Q' ln offering the 1941 Forum the Staff has endeavored to portray the results of education founded on three main objectives: loyalty to our country, line enthusiasm, and respect for humanity. Through our daily life at Senn We are infused with a spirit of loyalty which creates in us undivided fidelity to our school and to our countryg with the spirit of enthusiasm, a spirit of rejoicing and of music, of faith in action, of harmony, of order, and of proportiong with regard for human relationships, whereby we learn to live together in amity, regardless of political belief, of creed, of race. DAVID M. DAVIDSON Principal of Semz High School DEDICATIIIN 45 The primary step of the entering Freshman is prob- ably the most difficult one in his entire high school career. It is only by acquiring the Senn spirit that he is able to overcome his discomfort in a new environment and to take his place in the life of the school. Through her sympathy, loyalty, industry, amiability, and inspiring personality, she has contributed to the development of all students into real Sennites. The 1941 Forum Staff is honored to dedicate this hook to Miss May Cavanagh. Spirit, enthusiasm, zest, and social fervor, were the key-notes of our fellow-students. Out of this class of 298, 36 ranked for the national honor society, and we might add, most of them were girls. Days and days fled by as the officers prepared entertainment programs for the stu- dents, arranged for the prom, luncheon, and graduation. The class promenade was held at the beautiful and spacious Boulevard room of the Stevens Hotel. A grand treat was in store for all who attended that unforgettable night of January 28, 1941. The luncheon proved to be a huge success at the Marine dining- room in the Edgewater Beach Hotel, with Ray Ponds and his orchestra, and lastly, graduation, January 30, 194-1. Talent from every corner of the school provided excellent entertainment throughout the semester. Dr. Samuel Burkholder and his chorus gave us all a pleasant surprise when the Mikado was featured during the fall. Sports achievements were the high- lights for many months. So again we shall look back on our high school days, happy memories will we beckon at every turn we make, whether our fall be upward or downward during life's busy course, Senn High will always linger on. Excitement started when ,lack Krisor, Dick Cashmore, Nancy Myer, Jean Plam- beck, Don Doerscher, Gretchen Kaeser, Kitty Ann Webster, and Merrie Wilkerson were elected 4A leaders out of a score of contestants. These newly elected officers met early with Mr. Davidson and Dr. Zimmerman, the new Senior Adviser, to plan a long series of Senior events. Graduation pictures were snapped for the Annualg rings, pins and lavaliers went on saleg orders were taken for the modern class announcements, first of their kind to have the new Senn crestg scholarship exams were taken by the more industrious members of the class, personal interviews were given to every member of the 4A class by Mr. Satterfield, who was recently appointed placement adviserg the Players gave a first class performance in their take-off of the Senn faculty in What A Life, the averages and rank of all graduates were computed. All these events were taking place but the 1LA's were looking forward to that last week. It came more quickly than was expected and brought with it the unforgetable Senior Prom held in the Boulevard Room of the Stevens Hotel. The day of Graduation rehearsals and then the Senior Luncheon, which was held in the Marine Dining Room of the Edgewater Beach Hotel, arrived. Finally, when attention was drawn toward the large class, it was decided to hold the graduation exercises at Orchestra Hall, instead of Senn Hall as has been cus- tomaryg thus, it enabled parents, relatives, and close friends to witness the final gathering on that never-to-be-forgotten night of graduation. ALL SCHOOL COUNCIL-FALL 15' Wlith a burst of energy the Fall All School Council, consisting of the class officers rallied by an additional nine members, was off!! The 4A office of All School Council has been abandoned. Six committee chairmen elected by the students, instead of being selected as had previously been done, and three new electixe oflices, Marshal Court Judges, brought the total membership up to twenty-nine this semester. The first undertaking of this group was to support the PTA drive to raise money for the Senn Student Service. The girls helped sell the green and white tags. The campaign for the Thanksgiving Collection began rolling with peppy assemblies to arouse student interest. The trotting council members made a big hit and large pro- ceeds with their first dance, the Turkey Trot. Another brainstorm of the members which hit the student body with approval was Mum Day. Woe to the one Who Wasnlt sporting a flower on that dayl The total proceeds from all of the contributions was 551276.71 the largest amount ever collected in the history of Scnn. According to earlier tradition, Scnn has for a long time distributed Christmas baskets to needy families of the community. This year breaking the tradition, the All School Council decided to establish a milk fund whereby ten needy families would be supplied with milk daily until the fund of about 56400 is exhausted. In order to raise money for the milk fund this group gave another super dance, the Holly Hop. The semester ended with the feeling that the All School Council had really accom- pished their undertakings. The members wish to express their sincere thanks to Prin- cipal Davidson, who acted as Council Adviser at all meetings, for his great help. ALL SCHOOL COUNCIL-SPRING Twenty-seven class oliicers elected for the Spring term of the All School Council under the leadership of President Jack Krisor met with Mr. Davidson early in March to discuss the new marking system whereby absence is the only cause of failure. Since the committee chairmen are now elected by the student body, there was no delay in organizing committees promptly in order that the many tasks would be carried out quickly and without commotion. To the newly organized Marshal court three new judges were elected to carry out the work of disciplining students for such offenses as running in the hall, cutting classes, being tardy to class excessively. Perhaps the chief work of the Spring All School Council was to keep in touch and further the big Clean-Up-Campaign, This committee certainly accomplished things with the help of teachers, classes, and school store proprietors. Pictures were taken of alley and dumping grounds where conditions were very bad. Additional pictures were taken later on showing these conditions greatly improved. Members of the All School, Council wish to extend their thanks to Mr. Davidson who has been a very helpful source of both information and advice throughout the semester. A new theme, original cover, and an entirely different book were the purposes and aims of the staff and each plan was carefully checked so as to present a book which would be entirely diilerent to the student body. The planning of the book, layouts and general supervision were managed by Editor-in-Chief Sophie Thoness who also handled the Writeups. Donald Gary, Assistant Editor, assumed the grinding task and applied intense concentration to the graduate biographies. Hours were spent in verifying the names and activites of the graduates. Betty Borgeson did her Work capably as Identification Editor as Well as helping in other departments. ' The tedious and rather sticky job of planning the last section of the book was ably carried out by William Neebe as Art Editor. He deserves laurels for the fine job he did under Mrs. Dooley's competent supervision. Co-Editor flfalli SENN NEWS is As the twenty-fourth year of the Semi News got under way the new staff felt that the six column paper of former years was outmoded. Therefore it adopted a hrand new five column format set in eight point type. By making this change it enabled more printed matter to he carried on a smaller paper. The staff of the fall semester which set out on this modern trend was headed hy Co-Editors-In-Chief Helen Wienrich and Nancy Myer and Assistant Editor Dorothy Wfatters. Wfith graduation, the spring semester hrought changes in the staff. Nancy Myer hecame the 11ew Editor-In-Chief, with Adele Pincus and Shirley Cywan Assistant Editors. During the year a series of special editions followed one after another. First came the ever popular Pigskin edition, then the Shutterbug. the Schedule edition, Senior paper, No-Senn-Se. Surprize edition, and was it a surprize, and the Spring Sports paper. Right in the middle of the spring semester all journalists, cuhs and vets. took time out to go on a tour of the Tribune Tower and then took part in a school broadcast over WGN. Thus with new enlightenment they finished the semester with bang-up editions. Thanks are extended to Miss Corcoran without whose ever present advice and assistance the Senn News in its high standard would never have existed. STANDING SENIIPR. HONOR SOCIETY The Senn Honor Society through its influential and energetic work reached a high peak in membership this year. Although the requirements for admission to the group were raised, the increase was evident because of the greater interest in scholastic achievement. The most impressive activity of the Honor Society each semester is the initiation of the members of the National Honor Society. Throughout his entire high school career it is the aim and ambition of each Honor Society member to be elected to this National Society. Only graduates are permitted to participate in this solemn and sacred ritual. The assemblage is usually presented before the members of the Honor Society and the students of the Freshman class, in order to awaken an interest in the beauty and importance of attaining scholastic recognition as a member of the Honor Society. As the curtains part, revealing a darkened stage, the observers are heard to sigh at the beauty of the setting. Miss Whitney, as Goddess of Honor stands in the rear of the stage holding the Haming torch exemplifying the burning light of knowledge. Robed in white, the initiates slowly approach from each side of the stage and light their candles at the torch. Each student defines the purpose of the Society in a short sentence and then all join in the singingfof Integer Vitae, the old Latin song. The Goddess of Honor, slowly rasing her lighted torch, reveals the Shield of the National Honor Society ou which are inscribed the letters S., L., C., S., specifying the high standards and con- ceptions of the organization, Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. With the encouragement and assistance of Principal David M. Davidson, the adviser, and the faculty, the Honor Society has developed into a well-organized group, participating fully in student activities and helping in student government. In eleven weeks, we did three one-act plays in Senn Hall fand one of them we did four timesll and then topped them with Goldsmith's What A Life. Thatas some record, but itis only part of it. We finished our public career with another perfectly mad comedy, Everything Nice. You know Sugar and spice and-? And since this is our diary or something, we might as well record the fact that we had a swell tea for our parents in February, and another in conjunction with the Workers on the stage for their parents and ours too, in June. Besides which modest achievements we handled the Greek Relief Drive and took in two hundred and fifty-eight dollars, every cent of which went to school children in Greece, And thereis one more item. This is a class composed of students interested in stage craft under the able direction of Miss Doniat. There are two divisions in Workers, 4'domos and Hneosn. The first group is com- posed of those students having been in the class at least one semester and are called the crew , The neos are those in their first semester of Workers. This semester, the Workers have broken their record by producing not only their usual semester play but also many one act plays: The Turtle Dove, The Wedding, and Young America. The play chosen for this semester was What A Life. For such a simple setting the Workers certainly did a grand job. Credit and praise should be given to Richard Lence, the stage manager and Ellen Swanson, student assistant. Without them, the Workers would not have produced What a Life as successfully as they did. Likewise, let us not forget the Hneosw who made an exact model stage of the final setting on the Senn stage. We should also praise their stage managers, Cecil Rhodes, Tom Barnall, Bob Sterling. And so, the next time you see a play on Senn stage, remember those behind the scenes, the Workers! MENT IS CUNDUCTED BY MEMBERS ELECTED Page Eighty-ilwec X, i 0 WAN. Q UN M R.O.T.C. Organized in 1921 by Captain King, the Band' has donc much to build up school spirit and uphold the high morale of the school. Their Fall and Spring concerts were very successful. A combined gymnastic, ROTC, fencing, and Band show was featured in the Spring concert. This year the Band competed in the City Band Contest for class A bands and received an lf rating. lt is interesting to know that the Band has never received anything below an excellent rating in the City Band Contest. The Concert Band had a great number of solo and group winners in the city-wide contest. Don Thompson on the saxophone, Bob Rosengarden and ,lan Hatchikian on snare drum, ,lean Gerken twirling, and the saxophone quartet composed of Don Thompson, Jack Olrikson, Dave Snapp, and Robert Jonas. The oflicers for the spring semester were Major Ray Dahlgren, Captain Homer Starks, First Lieutenant Leslie Siebert, First Lieutenant Earl Anderson, Second Lieutenant George Lazarus, and Second Lieutenant Arthur Scatini. The Band participated at football games, assemblies, and ROTC functions. Mem- bers of the band also participated in the Mikado and the North Side Clinic Band. The Band department is divided into three groups. The Junior Band for beginners, the Military Band for those who are more advanced in the art of playing with a group, and finally the Concert Band, the advanced band. Confronted with the task of playing the Mikado in October, these players came through with Hying colors. The Christmas and other assemblies showed their capabilities and revealed the orchestra as an organization always on the job. In January was organized The Orchestra Clinic at Lane High school and the Senn Orchestra led hy Dr. Burkholder played before a large representation of conductors from all over the country. Mr. Davidson has invited the orchestra to appear at many of the district grade schools this Spring including Swift, Peirce, Hayt, Daniel Boone, Stewart, and others. The object was to develop better relations and to encourage the musical groups in these schools. The Annual Contest and Spring: Festival were highlights in May and June and the orchestra took a leading part in these activities. Dr. Burkholdcr is to he commended on his fine leadership. FOOTBALL ' Despite the faet that the Bulldogs played better offensive and defensive ba.t than any other team in the seetion. they' had to be eontent with a tie for seeond plaee. The progress of the team was slow but it earns- up to be one of the best in the eity. The line. through whieh only six points were scored, was the main reason for the sueeesslul season. Captain Jim Groh was the spark plug in the forward wall. Two big taekles gaye the necessary weight to the line. Mal Pearson. at 204 pounds. and Bob Smart, at 1,95 pounds, were the bone Crushers. Hill Taekehery and lid Weaver. both last yearis regulars, formed two ends equally etlieient in pass snaring and delensiye ability. Marx ,laeobs and Don Alvarez were the guards and Jiin Crob was the pivot man. The first league was against Sulliyan and the Cats were downed easily' 9 to 0. However, the lndians did not show the class prevalent of the Senn team throughout the year. The Varsity team finished its season with a smashing victory over the Alumni on a rain swept field. The final score was 12 to 6. Six boys comprised Coach Dowls well balanced back-field. Dick Cashniorc provided most of the kicking and passing, with good running on the side. Joe Micotto and Norm Harris have been rated as two of the best blocking backs in the city. Though their main duty was blocking, they picked up the necessary yardage for many first downs. Torsty Ahlbeck and Sam lVlicotto were small shifty runners who broke away for many Scnn tallies. John Romano used his weight and ability for smashing line bucks. At the annual football banquet Joe Micotto was awarded the Doctor Timmons Award for his fine blocking. Grob, Alvarez, and Cashmere received mention for their fine work when the All-Chicago Prep teams were picked. Altogether we can say the team had a successful season. 1940 FOOTBALL SCORES Senn 9.. . . . .Sullivan Senn 42 ........ Taft Senn 6 .... GYM TEAM Three new gold shields, commemorating championships won in 194-0 and 1941, adorn the trophy case in Senn Hall foyer. Only one other school, in past years, has won championships in this sport. That school is Lindblom, who for fifteen years dominated the high school gymnastic championships of the city. Coach Alfred E. Bergmann Hnally determined to end this schoolis long reign. With this thought in mind, the members of his class were instilled with the thought that Lindblom must fall. Last year Lindblom was upset for the first time as Senn took the city title. Then to prove it was no mistake, Senn this year annexed the City and Central A. A. U. titles. From the few hard working lnembers who started in his first classes, Coach Berg- man built the membership up to two classes containing forty-five advanced members and fifty in the beginners, class. The secret of their success is Work and perseverance. Places in the three divisions were taken by seventeen boys in Winning the City title. ln the championship division Beyer, Brennan, Stake, Lundien, and Cain garnered the necessary places, Beyer winning first place. Intermediates who played were Bouffard, Looper, Stewart Fox, James Vlfilkerson, and William Vretto. In the novice division Glen ,lergueson took first place with Wilbert Erickson, Emanuel Alver- dez, ,lim Bridges, Frank Harris, William Robbins, and Wilbur Schram acquiring the other points necessary for victory. The siX boys responsible for winning the Central A. A. U. Championship were Beyer, Brennan, Lundien, Bouffard, Stake, and Looper. Other gymnasts were entered in both meets but everyone cannot Win. Senn is proud of its achievements and in the future with the excellent leadership and hard working members, they will be obtaining many more shields to adorn the walls of Senn, Page One I'I1u1drcd Twenty-one JUNIOR BASKETBALL to Yvilh the learn composed c-hiefly' of sophomores, Sennis junior basketeers did not lare as well as their big brothers. lNot that they' were handieapped by these youngsters, it was only the lack of neeessarv experienee. FENCING Q The 1941 Fencing Team, although not able to capture the city crown, rounded out a very prosperous campaign, Hnishing third in the city meet behind Austin and Hyde Park respectively. This was the third consecutive city title won by the powerful Austin aggregation. The backbone of the varsity squad consisted of five members, Stan Jacobs, Roy Herter, Bob Wviley, Humphrey Sullivan, and Sam Gelh. The Green and White Captain Bloods fenced furiously through the entire city meet and, though We can't offer any excuses, with just a little better luck the Senn team could have raised themselves a notch higher in the final standings. It might be stated here that the Austin team will lose its entire starting lineup and that Hyde Park vvill reli11- quish three of their regular four-man team. Lane was the Bulldogls next opponent. The former won the tilt 5 to 1 in a pitchcrls duel with Lou Rosin holding up the Senn half on the mound. The Sennites were leading the lndians going into the sixth when Lane tallied three unearned runs. They added two more in the seventh. GOLF Q' With the beginning of Senn's 1940 golf season things looked pretty bad as far as the golf team was concerned since not one man from the 1939 golf team returned to school. Mr. Shaffner, who was acting coach at that time, has since turned over the instructor's job to Coach Friker, the newest addition to Sennls athletic department. An intramural tournament was held this semester in May with Werner Baum, Eugene Edson, Russell Bernstein, and Carl Shogran emerging victorious. Therefore, they were selected to represent Senn in all golf meets this season. Sennis first meet was with Sullivan, to whom they lost by the score of 12 to O. Bounc- ing back from this defeat, the Green and White divot diggers by the identical score of 12 to 0 defeated both Lake View and Von Steuben. Once a month, on the first Monday, there is a swimming period from three until four, for all lNereids who care to come. Social activities during the past year included a luncheon and splash party at the Chicago Towers Club, a roller skating party at the armory, and a party after school in the Senn lunchroom. Membership in the club has been greatly increased during the past year and many girls are eagerly working for points.
