Four years later this same class of students, numbering close to 300, and headed by Dick Treat, Andy Hayes, Doris Henriksen, jerry Magruder, and George Harrah, proved itself outstand- ing in more Ways than one. During the football and basketball seasons the stands were filled with spirited Senn Seniors cheering their teams. Through the efforts of the All School Council, led by the 4A officers, 51512.00 was raised during the semester exclusive of football games and other social events. Two committees Were, in the main, responsible for the collection of this money. They Were the Thanksgiving Committee under th-e direction of Mel Holleb, and the Christmas Committee, headed by Franklin Adams. Drama played an important part in the semester's calendar. This year the Players and Work-ers presented Tiger House. After weeks of preparation and expectation the Prom finally arrived, being held at the beautiful Medinah Athletic Club. Three short days after, the Senior Luncheon at the Edgewater Beach. Dancing furnished entertainment for the afternoon. The same evening, Thursday, January 26, was the final round-up for a class that had been together for four short, eventful years at Senn. Faithful and true-hearted, Let us cheer our dear Senn High, We revere her and defend her, And her colors proudly fly: We will stand for her, united, Of her deeds we gladly tell, Her colors streaming, Clad faces beaming, 1939 So here's a cheer for her that we all love so well. .loyous and ever loyal, Let us boost for Our Senn Highf' Let ev'ry heart sing, Let ev'ry voice ring, There's no time to grieve or sighg It's ever onward, our course pursuing, May defeat never our ardor cool, But united, We will boost for her, our Senn High School. Page 35 WII.I,IAM MILLIKEN President JACK MILLEN Vive-president EDWARD RELTH Treasurer DORIS NUGENT Secretary DAN ADAMS All School Council June, 1939, Class Pep and school spirit marked the June, 1939, Class as outstanding. The semester got off to a fine start when Bill Milliken, Jack Millen, Doris Nugent, Ed Relth and Dan Adams were named 4A leaders after a hotly contested election. This quintet, ably directing All School Coun- cil activities, planned the many gala Spring affairs. Among the sporting -events, basketball ranked first as a crowd pleaser, and many were the thrilling games the Seniors witnessed. Real Senn history was made when the Kraft Cup was awarded our fencers. Base- ball, track, and apparatus teams also provided many exciting times. More top-ranking entertainment was offered by the presentation of You Can't Take It With You by the Players. Superb acting insured success for this hilarious comedy. As the end of the semester drew near, Seniors yielded to their desire for some all-around fun. Stunt day with its costumes, parade and dance filled that need most satisfactorily. The long-awaited Senior Prom was held in the Tower Room of the Drak-e Hotel only two days before graduation. Then came the Senior Luncheon which was held this year in the Marine Dining Room of the Edgewater Beach Hotel. Graduation-diplomas, speeches, farewells. Another class has gone. On january 3, 1939, a big Night Club and dance was given in the Senn Cafeteria, at which the Constitution and by-laws were adopted. On May 5, jack DeCaprio, president of the June, 1932, class, was elected presidentg Wallace Dunn was voted vice-presidentg Shirley Long was made recording secretary, Miss Frances Erikson, a Senn graduate and faculty member, was elected corresponding secretary: and Robert Paetz was chosen treasurer. A Board of Directors of eleven graduates was elected and Prin- cipal Davidson named Miss Mc- Carthy, Miss Skillen, Miss Doniat, Miss Corcoran, and Miss Cain as Faculty members. Betty Bear was elected Chair- man of Publicity, while Wallace Dunn was appointed Entertain- ment Chairman, and Mrs. Maxine Terrill was appointed Member- ship Chairman. Members of January and June, 1939, classes were received as members of the Senn Alumni As- sociation at the party on June 9. All School Council-Fall S-E-N-N, Rah, Senn! Such was the peppy spirit of the All School Council of last fall. Its speedy organization proved it able to fill its purpose, that of formulating school policies. The first of these Committees to be organized was one to help the Parent Teachers Association in their campaign for increasing their mem- bership. This drive turned out to be a huge success for the Council as well as for the PTA. Next in the limelight came the Thanksgiving Committee that was under the chairmanship of Mel Holleb who along with his peppy assist- ants made a thorough drive in the division rooms. Real results rewarded thanks to the work of these workers. Many happier Christmases were celebrated, made possible by the Christmas Committee, and thanks were given to Franklin Adams who acted as Chairman and his driving assistants. The Committe-e made the Sennites dig into their pockets and give with a happy spirit. One of the last things the Council was able to do before the semester ended was to sponsor three big contests, which were Music, Architec- tural, and Radio Broadcast script writing which many Sennites entered. All School Council-Spring The twenty-one class officers met with Mr. Davidson in February to plan the Spring work of the All School Council. At the beginning of the semester, the group worked wholeheartedly to promote Senn News subscription campaigns, 1939 Forum Annual sales and city-wide band and choral contests. Clean-up campaign was the chief work of the Spring All School Coun- cil. A committee under the leadership of Louis Zuckerman, Jayne Ben- ario with Miss Chaitkin as faculty adviser, worked extensively in Senn and the neighboring elementary schools to make the Senn district out- standing for cleanliness. This committee conducted surveys, tabulated results and brilliantly publicized its campaign to Clean-up, Paint-up, and Light-up. Stunt day, Prom and luncheon committees managed senior affairs most efficiently. The All School Council may well be proud of its work as the policy making body in Senn. It upholds the democratic traditions of the school and prepares every student for active participation in democratic gov- ernment. Every worthwhile activity in the school receives proper con- sideration and support from the members of the All School Council. To become a member the Senn student must possess at least Z5 points, 20 of which must be attained through scholarship. Five points may also be obtained through outstanding service to the school. In major sub- jects each S counts 8 pointsg E, 5 points, and -each G, 1 pointg in the minor subjects, an S earns 4 and an E 2 points. At the conclusion of the semester, Mr. Davidson and a group of the faculty select graduating Seniors from the Senn Honor Society for the National Honor Society. Players Senn Players enacted two plays of exceptional merit during the past year. In fall Tiger House, a thrilling, chilling mystery, was given by Miss Skillen's seasoned actors and actresses. You Can't Take It With You provided top entertainment for all Sennites. The unforgettable comedy played before capacity audiences. In addition to the fine work done on these two plays, several one-act plays were presented to small but appreciative groups. Richard Baker in the Fall semester and Ed Relth in Spring were the guiding spirits of th-e Players. Other dramatists working in an executive capacity were Ruth Ahlquist, Hamilton Branch, Carol Schmidt, Beryl Peterson and joan Howard. The work of the Players during the past year had done much to sus- tain Senn's fine reputation and to uphold the high standards of the Dramatics department set by Players of other years. Of the past year's work it can be said that new ideas and personalities have been devel- oped. For a gratifying spirit of friendship and cooperation is always prevalent among Senn's dramatists. Workers Can those Workers create atmosphere? And howl Remember those thrilling scenes in Tiger House tOh, those clawslj? Workers designed the settings and lighting effects for this memorable play. With the close of the Fall semester came the solemn ceremony at which Caroline Albert, Patricia Brownell, Alice Driscoll, Doris Nadel, Bernard Nelson, and Bette Nelson were presented with their emblems. At a similar ceremony in june, Ruth Abrahamson, Charlotte Bostetter, Richard Koolconian, Charlotte Kusswurm and Arthur Nordhem were honored. You Can't Take It With You, the Spring play, made real Senn history. For the first time on the Senn stage real nrecrackers were used. The kind cooperation of a neighboring fire department secured this privilege for Workers. But even more exciting was the fact that due to the complete sell-out of tickets, Senn Hall balcony was opened for the first time in many years. An account of the year wouldn't be complete without the mention of the gay Bohemian party which Miss Doniat and the Workers gave for the Players. The thoroughly Parisian atmosphere insured success. Page Xi 1939 Forum Tossing dignity to the winds, the Staff of the 1939 Forum planned an informal book filled with rollicking humor and nursery- rhymish jingles. Using Sally and Sammy Sennite as the central figures, the editorial and art staffs cooperated to publish an An- nual worthy of Senn's 26th birthday. Vivian Fried, Ruth Mader, Arthur Rus- sell and Charles Eischen comprised the quartet which wrestled with editorial prob- lems, plans and publicity. Fees were handled by the duo-efficiency of Mary Powell and Beverly Olson. The big sales campaign and Freshman Sammy and Sally Sennite contest were managed by Nina Studley. john Astin and Don Friedman, Co-Sports Editors, edit-ed a peppy and representative Athletic section. Marjorie Bondy took charge of Identifications for group pictures. The graduate biographies were handled by Yvonne Piesens, Marian Richter, Eleanor Sandstrom, Phyllis Stevenson, and Hilda Williams. Working under the experienced leader- ship of Miss Corcoran, the enthusiastic staff carried to a brilliant conclusion the work on the 1939 Forum. 1939 Forum The jolly spirit of Sammy and Sally Senn- ite has been faithfully transferred to the pages of the 1939 Forum by Mrs. Dooley's competent staff headed by Art Editor Rose- mary Shea. The Readin, Ritin, and Rithmetic of the cover was designed by Theodorsa Ruh- mann. Who cannot sympathize with the apple-polishing youth on the first division page done by Shirley Mohlin or with Adele Koenigner's battling boys which appropri- ately precedes activities? The fishing scene, symbolizing Athletics, was also executed by Adele. The wooden-shoed little lady who heads the informal snapshot section was drawn by Rosemary Shea. Clever border designs by Lois Green and the Ex Libris and Finis by Shirley Miller contributed much to the charm of the 1939 Forum. The excellent mounting of graduates, and snapshots was due to the hard work of Don Peterson and Herman Kellman. The guiding spirit behind the Art Staff was quiet, efficient Mrs. Dooley. On the morning of September 23, 1938 S-enn students sat amazed as they scanned a new Senn News, thoroughly modernized in format and content, and maintaining but one old tradition-the spirit of powerful, straightforward journalism. Leaders in this transformation were the Editorial Triumvirs, Shirley Blacker, Rich- ard Goldberg and Don Yellon. Special editions during the fall semester included the Halloween, Armistice Day, the Pigskin -that sent Senn's gridiron temperature to record height-and the Junior jinx Edi- tions. February ushered in the new editorial Staff with Elaine Ehlers and Gloria Kras- now as co-editors. While plans for the spring papers were being concluded, the Staff turned their attention to the Senn Broadcast over WMAQ and the full page write-up in the Chicago American. After these achievements, the first spring papers went to press. Insennity, Sports and the Schedule Editions were among the special issues published during this semester. Technical Sergeant George L. Searle's retirement in March, 1939 put the command of the Senn Regiment into the hand of Staff Sergeant Albert j. Cloutier. As Sergeant Cloutier reported to Senn as the Assist- ant Instructor on September 6, 1938, he had six months in which to familiarize himself with the routine of his new job. Because of this foresight, the Regimentls progress was not retarded during the change of command. In the Fall of 1938, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Ash, assisted by Cadet Major Robert Dellenback, Cadet Major Ross Merritt, and Cadet Major Sherrill Smith commanded the unit. During their tenure of office, a Military Ball was held on December 16 at the Country Club of Evans- ton. Chairman Cadet Major Dellenback and his co-workers on the com- mittee, Cadet Captain Berger, Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Clark, and Cadet Captain W-eikel of the Band produced one of the most financially and socially successful Balls held in years. On November 10 the entire school turned out to witness an Armistice Day ceremony featuring the R.O.T.C. unit and a special firing squad. When the new semester came, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Sherrill Smith was appointed commanding officer. His assisting officers were Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Ross Merritt of the Cadet Corps Staff, Cadet Major Cletus Berger and Cadet Major Warren Darnell. Concert Band The Senn Concert Band is one of the outstanding activities of the High School and it has developed much of the spirit which now exists in the school. Organized in 1921 under the leadership of Captain King, it aroused very much interest among the studentsg it grew from a small organiza- tion to a large powerful one with an enviable record. Captain Gish, the successor to Captain King, resigned in 1930 and his successor was an in- comparable musician, Captain Charles Ostergren, our present director. The Band has gone on with unique record because of his indefatigable efforts in behalf of this organization. The Band has won City contests since 1926 and numerous State and National contests. The Band presents its concerts every Fall and Spring. The Band Department consists of the Concert Band of 90 pieces, and the Military Band of 60 pieces. Page 94 Its purpose is to create and inspire interest in instrumental music and to further Band membership among the students. For greater efficiency the Band is divided into two units, both functioning as a company in the R. O. T. C. This system is a important factor in the Band's out- standing achievements as it promotes discipline, without which no or- ganization can exist. The Concert Band consists of experienced musicians who are familiar with concert music. They participate in assembly programs, football assemblies and games, s-erve on other occasions where band music is appropriate and they participate at all R. O. T. C. functions. Band drill is a regular part of the curriculum. The Military Band is composed of less experienced musicians and acts as a Ufeederl' for the Concert Band, giving the student the necessary experience and preparation. Its success has been aided by the moral and financial support of the Parents' Association which was one of the first of its kind to be organized -which was in 1928. They have raised sums of money for the advance- ment of instrumental music in Senn High School and have furnished numerous sums of money for trips to the National contests. Boys' Chorus The Boys' Chorus, nrst of its kind in Senn, was organized by Mrs. Millar last fall. After a great deal of scouting about 50 members were recruited. But in the Spring many more boys applied than could be accepted. The chorus under its own oflicers is student managed and as Z1 result the discipline problem has been considerably minimized. Some of the numbers included in the boys' repertoire are Let Every Tongue Adore Thee by Bach, On the Lagoon by Brahms, Palmer Clarke's Sea Gypsy, and Border Ballad by Maunder. The Boys' Chorus now ranks as one of the better organized Senn choral groups. Page 9 6 ROW 1: Brouwer, Riley, XVerncr. Girls' Chorus Another new music organization is the Girls' Chorus under the direc- tion of Miss Cameron. The girls prepare part-songs for Assembly pro- grams and concerts. The Chorus members work enthusiastically in preparation of repertoire for ensemble singing. The fine spirit of fellowship among the girls is shown by the successful social gatherings that have been held during the past year. An afternoon tea at the Edgewater Beach Hotel, a spring picnic and the handkerchief showers for graduating chorus members show that the girls have man- aged to Iind time both for work and for play. The only boy even vaguely connected with the Girls' Chorus is their super-accompanist Ted Berg. An exceptionally fine Christmas program, given in the traditional manner, was the outstanding performance of the choir. January 11, competing in the city-wide Choral contest, the Semi group win an Excellent rating, thus rounding out a semester's activities. In Spring the A Cappella Choir and the Glee Clubs participated in the city-wide Spring Festival which was held at the International Amphi- theatre. Shortly after this, came the Annual Concert in which a total of 200 singers and musicians took part. The Senn A Cappella under Dr, Burkholderls direction completed its season by singing in the North Side Festival held at Chase Park. Page 9 8 Row l: Levin, Merritt, Dellenback. Marshals The Marshal organization is outstanding for the civic work it has done in Senn. It has always followed its original purpose-to instill into the minds of Senn students the ideals of leadership and service. A truly civic-minded organization. The organization within the last year has done much to improve con- ditions around Senn, especially concerning school discipline, fire control, and other emergency conditions that might arise. Under the capable leadership of Dr. Brown and the executive staff, the Marshals have grown and prospered and improvements are con- stantly being made. Big Sisters To guide, encourage and cherish Sally and Sammy Freshman is the aim of the Big Sisters. 4A Girls have helped this semester to make our Freshman boys and girls acquainted with Senn, its complex building, its systems and its activities. On Wednesday, May 17, the Freshman Assembly provided talent from its own group. The Big Sisters have coached these youngsters for their premiere performance, have given them stage presence and have stimulated th-eir enthusiasm. Each 1B and 1A division has a Big Sister who reports to long division on Fridays to convey school news, interprets Freshman plans and stim- ulates scholarship competition. Last semester 249 and 336, the Freshman rooms showing greatest improvement in scholarship, were treated to a matinee at the Uptown Theatre. The Big Sister sponsors of 249 and 336 accompanied the groups. The same treat is ready for two freshman rooms at this time. Marilyn McMaster is president, Marie von Martinitz, secretary. Dick Company, a lecture by a representative of the Pitman Publishing Company, plays and a newspaper written in shorthand insure entertaining and instruc- tive meetings. Girls in their last semester of shorthand had a contest. The winner was awarded a gold pin. A trip to the offices of Montgomery Ward provided some very useful information about employment and employee qualifications. Football All hopes of the stout-hearted Green and White Bulldog retaining their North Section title bone in 1938 was blanketed by one obstacle, a massive Rock of Gibraltar Lane Tech machine. t'Gone are the old, familiar faces . . . Lamb's immortal words stood frosted on Coach Ed Dow's lips at the opening response to the call for candidates. The line, including Carlson, Osterveer, Nugent, and Tor- rel, was torn apart by the preceding June and january graduations, with Leis, the brightest star of them all, leaving a pair of immeasurably tough shoes to till in the backfield. So Dow again reverted to the classics with the plea, t'Give me some men who are stout-hearted men .... He got 'em too, and as the sea- son opened with but four lettermen, Milliken, Nelson, Aberson, and Crimmins, returning from last year's city runnerups, Dow made it clear that all roads lead to-Lane! With that objective determinably set in their eyes, the Green and White opened at Loyola Stadium with a 6-O practice victory over the Academy. This was followed by a vigorous 26-6 win over Amundsen. Then Page 116 eleven burly Rough Riders from Roosevelt roared from out of the West and but one touchdown narrowly separated a Senn victory from a defeat. Aberson Sammy Baughedl' a touchdown pass to Fleming for the only score. Lake View's Wild Cats scratched and screamed but the Bulldogs, on the contrary, had a bite to equal their bark and squeezed through on an 8-0 count with a safety and a touchdown scored by Fleming. The calm before the storm came the next Saturday when lowly Waller placed its head on the block. The Senn guillotine snapped . . . 35-0. Now take your magic key and open up Father Time's private cabinet. Pick out October 22 and you're settled in the grandstand at Addison and Western. If you're wearing Myrtle and Gold it's warm but if you sit on the Senn side it's bitter cold. And it stayed that way all through the afternoon. An aft-ernoon that was on edge throughout with passes and prayers . . . cleats and cleverness. The Indians crashed down the war path and stomped out without mercy all Senn title hopes. The indomitable Lane machine was far too powerful, their defense too impregnable, and their charging offense far too overwhelming for the spunky Bulldogs, with Milliken at the helm and Brown pacing the comparatively light line, who fought almost to the point of exhaustion even to the moment when the final score was being posted on the board: Lane 34, Senn 13. The remainder of the season might have been called the falling action CEnglish theme writing, remember?j only it was'nt. Sullivan who had been gnashing their teeth for the past tive years, grasped this op- portune moment to try to strike a lethal blow. The Rogers Park boys managed to push over two touchdowns, one capped with the extra point, but the Bulldogs overlapped this with a hard-earned 26 points gained mostly through the passing of Aberson to Ends Peterson and Polland. Bob Koehler's Schurz outfit, much weaker than in former years, fell 14-0, in the Green and White finale. In the outstanding play of the game, Fleming banged through right tackle, and, losing blockers Milli- ken and Aberson in the scuffle, he scampered 80 yards . . . outdistanc- ing three would-be tacklers to score the first touchdown. Nelson grabbed one of Abersonls passes to conclude the Senn scoring. The Alumni, led by perennial threat Gus Elliot, smashed to a 19-0 conquest over the weary varsity on Thanksgiving morning. Page 117 Junior Basketball If fight and hustle determined the champion, then Eddie Dow's scrappy junior cagers should have finished on top instead of the bottom of the North Section heap. In the opener with Von Steuben, the Senn boys fought hard but lost on a 30-21 count. The following Friday, Sullivan upset age-old tradition by defeating Senn for the second time since becoming a high school. Next the Senn ponies travel-ed to Schurz to be defeated in a contest combining fun, fights and fouls 32-23. Then came two midseason victories, the only two for the hard-fighting and hard-losing team this year. First in line were the Lake View Cats. The Dowmen had little trouble squelching them 35-29. The second win was gained at the expense of Amundsen 30-22. Then, to pour salt into the sting left by a 46-22 Waller defeat, Lane won the following game 38-17, taking an early lead which they stub- bornly refused to relinquish, For every Green and White goal Roose- velt, in the next game, scored two. The contest ended with Roosevelt winning 30-15. In the last game of the year against Steinmetz the quintet went down fighting to their seventh defeat of the year, .losing 31-16. ' -KY! 'J -' . 1 -. Senior Basketball Dogged by bad luck and mid-year graduation, the Senn Senior cage artists finished a rather mediocre season with a record of five wins and four losses. The Bulldogs opened the season by sinking Von Steuben in a veritable barrage of baskets 40-15. Senn took an early commanding lead and were never headed throughout the game. They took the measure of their neighborhood rivals Sullivan in a hard-fought game 35-23. Schurz was the next victim and fell 28-26. The Shamrocks now had visions of a North Section title but Lake View shattered these 29-20. The next game saw Senn lose a 37-34 decision to Amundsen, finding it virtually impossible to penetrate Amundsenis man-to-man defense. Waller proved a tough nut to crack but Senn broke through in the last quarter to Win 27-24 due to the consistent playing of Dwan and Davis. The Lane Indians were after revenge and Senn got scalped 36-29 only after a last quarter rally had been stymied. Dwan again led the Senn scoring. Senn eked out a close win over Roosevelt by a score of 38-36 and the final game with Steinmetz proved a pitfall. Page II9 . ' 5 ?Avs4JJfl4'2'4' T s' Track The Senn junior Track team completed a successful indoor season in 1939 by finishing 2nd behind Crane in the City Meet. The team hung up three wins and two losses in their practice meets. The Lane Indians were Senn's first victims and fell 40-24. University High proved to be a soft touch as the Bulldogs trounced them 35-23. Rolling on to their third straight victory the Tracksters whipped Stein- metz 30-22. Pointing for the City Meet, the Juniors went to town falling short of first place as' they garnered 17 1-2 points to Crane's 21. In this meet the Senn junior relay team hung up a new record of 1:41.1 for the half mile relay to clip a tenth of a second off the old record of 1:41.2. With a short practice season, the Seniors rung up one victory against three losses. Only one of these losses was by a comfortable margin as two were dropped by one third of a point and 2 1-3 points respectively. In the City Meet, the Senn cinder artists copped fifth place with Kissel pacing the team and placing in both high and low hurdle events. Blumenthal got a first in the triple broad jump for Senn. Apparatus When alumni get together in years to come and begin to reminisce about Senn's athletic triumphs, 1939 will be regarded as the year that Coach Al Bergmann's gymnasts surprised them all. They will remember that 1939 was the year that the apparatus team won the city novice championship in a David-Goliath setup against Lindblom, perennial leaders. They wll look back and remember that it was the time Howie Jaynes won the individual championship, with Rollie Beyer capturing second place. They will, in short, recall that the gym team had one of the finest seasons in its history. And they will be correct on all accounts. for the gym team of 1939 was a true inspiration for all teams in the future. The regular team was composed of Howie jaynes, Hans Leis, Ben Keister, Edward Austin, Dick Gould, Herbert Minds, and Alfred Bjork- land. Each of these won major letters while the minor monograms were awarded to Jack Patrick, Edward Relth, and Harold Bell. Page 121 Fencing Class With an enrollment of 43 students, the advanced Fencing class pro- mises plentiful recruits for next year's Shamrock fencing team. Under Coach Shaffner's able tutelage they have rapidly learned the art of parry and reposte. The class is divided into IO teams of four men to a team with the remaining three as substitutes. The teams are conducting a tournament between the four teams. To date only two of these matches have been completed. The team composed of Ross, Cohn, Seigel, and Green de- feated Kansteiner, Wideman, Constan and Golinken 9 bouts to 7. The other match saw Moard, Gregg, Greenman, and Barris defeat Fenche, Ross, Sevin and Zuckerman on points 61-60 although they were tied in bouts 8-8. In one of the other matches, the team composed of Kondrat, Thanis, Benjamin and Kleinemen are leading Kirk, Paetz, Christensen and Frank by a score of 8-4. This match still has four bouts remaining to be played. Since most of his regular fencing team is graduating, Coach Shaffner will have to build his 1939-40 team around this promising class. Fencing Team If there is such a thing as a moral victory then the Fencing Team has a perfect right to claim that intangible honor, for but three points and Austin separated Coach Shaffner's quartet from the City champion- ship this year. The moral victory angle comes in when we recall that the Senn boys beat out the West Siders to take the Kraft Cup. Then, too, Senn won the State fencing championship again defeating Austin. However, when the City Meet came, Senn finished a close second behind the Austin foil nemesis, losing by a meager three points 163-160. At first it appeared that the Green and White was unbeatable. Jerry Mau, Jack Millen, Robert Deming, and Henry Hauser kept rolling along running up a total of sixteen straight Wins before losing a match. Then they met Austin .... Another glance at the moral victory side: out of a total of approxi- mately 40 fencers, eight qualified for the individual championship. Of these Senn placed thre-e men, Millen, Mau, and Deming, but so did Austin. Again, Senn's fencers could do nothing with the Austin trio. Captain Jack Millen, jerry Mau, Bob Oliphant, Warren Malik, and Robert Deming won major letters for their fine work. Page 123 Swimming Climaxing a rather inglorious season with the City Meet, the Bulldog tankers placed only one man in the finals for each team. Howie jaynes placed for the Seniors and Spring for the juniors. Jaynes, in the State Meet, finished second behind Anderson of Lane Tech, but in the City Meet in April, Jaynes upset Anderson to easily win the City Diving Crown. Spring of the juniors also finished third in the diving. jaynes has been the only consistent winner for the Seniors all year. Other tankers that showed well on the team were Jenkins, Lundeen, Beyer and Bjorkland, the latter two placing 10th and 14th respectively. Although the season could not be called successful, coach Bergmann is far from pessimistic. The material is in the school if the fellows would only turn out. The Junior team was composed mostly of first year men who had no experience in competition and the season proved to be val- uable in that respect for them. The Juniors were handicapped in several meets by having to swim against older fellows than themselves and this ...f . VA Q was the cause of one or two defeats. elf' l ROVV l: Pflaumer, Beyer, Jayues. Baseball After a short practice season caused by rainy weather the Shamrock diamonders began the season with a record of three wins and three losses in six practice games. Presenting a well balanced team, Coach Miller's baseballers made their 1939 debut by coming from behind to beat the Austin Maroons easily 14-6. Later Austin got revenge by beating Senn in a return engagement 12-10. Morton also proved too tough for the Millermen and Senn lost 10-3. Journeying to Wilmette, Senn found New Trier an easier foe and downed them 4-2 for their second win in four games. The Oak Park game proved a thriller which Senn dropped 2-O although pitch-ers Kanis and Aberson allowed Oak Park only two hits. The linal practice game saw Senn downing Farragut in a free scoring contest 12-11. In the opening league game, Amundsen proved a surprise by beating Senn 5-2 for an upset victory but Senn came back in the next two games and trounced Lake View and Roosevelt 5-3 and 10-5, respectively. Due to the late beginning Senn has yet to face Waller, Amundsen, Schurz, Lane, Von Steuben, Lake View and Roosevelt. The highlight of the practice season was the no-hit, no-run game pitched by john Kanis against Kelvyn Park as Senn won 10-0. Page 125 Badminton Badminton, the newest star to take its orbit among the constellation of sports, boasts a membership of thirty boys who, under Cap Leighton, have really started the baby sport on its career at the Green and White school. Due to an ingenious method devised by Coach Shaffner, six badmin- ton courts are made available at a time. These courts also can be con- verted into tennis courts, thus giving the tennis team a chance to work out in the gymnasium also. Racquets and shuttlecocks are furnished by the school bringing the playing cost down to a minimum. Senn, under Coach Harry Leighton, has been instrumental in the founding of badminton in Chicago high schools. Although badminton has been featured here for less than a year several schools from the city have visited the gymnasium and later developed courts much similar to those arranged by Coach Shaffn-er. A round robin intramural tournament has been in progress and four- teen double teams took part. In the state qualifying matches Captain Jimmy Evert, national in- door boys' singles and doubles champion, won both of his matches and will enter the finals. In the first encounter against Belson of Hyde Park, Jim won two out of three sets, the scores being 3-6, 6-4, and 7-5. Don Shiller and Art Leighton qualified in the doubles division, beating Lindblom 6-0 and 6-3 and Morgan Park 6-3 and 6-3. Moss and Shoke won their first match from Crane Tech. They lost their second match to Kelvin Park, city doubles champs. In the practice meets Senn beat Loyola 4-1,'Evert winning 8-6, 6-3, Leighton winning 6-O, 6-4, Shiller and Moss winning 6-1, 6-25 and Leighton and Dietrich losing 2-6 and 0-6. They then defeated Lake View 3-O. Evert won 6-O and 6-2. Leighton followed through, winning his sets by the same scores. Moss and Shoke won 2 out of 3 sets in the doubles division. Page 127 ROVV 1: Goldstein, Dwan, Temple, Libman, Coach Miller. Golf With a record of four straight sectional wins, Senn qualified for the City playoffs for the 1938 golf season. The playoffs saw Senn finish third behind Lane and Morgan Park. During the season the Green and White divot diggers triumphed over Von Steuben 9-3 and Roos-evelt 10-2. The next meet was with Sullivan whom the Bulldogs easily trounced 9-3. Lake View also proved a soft touch and Senn won 792-4W. In the playoffs, Lane was Senn's first opponent and as was typical of the 1938 season, the Indians were too tough and Senn lost its first match of the season 9M-ZW. Senn bounced right back to whip the quartet from Hyde Park 9-3, but Morgan Park also proved a nemesis to the Senn four, SV2-3 V2. The final standings of the championships gave Senn third place in the City behind Lane, the champion, and Morgan Park, the runner-up. Hyde Park finished fourth. Every member of the team, Don Temple, Warren Johnson, Ira Gold- stein, Robert Schlau, and Joseph Libman were awarded letters for their fine play through the season. The 1939 season had not yet gotten under way but the State prelimin- aries for golf were just completed. Senn qualified with john Dwan carding 79 for second place.
