This year proved to be one of the toughest in the history of Seneca. Coach John Novak had to build his team around three big line- men: center, Max Czemerynskig guard, Walter Herod, and tackle, Thomas Domanski, The Indians once again had a very tough schedule: Kensington, Bennett, Burgard, East, South Park, and Hutch-Tech in that order. The Indians ended with a record of two wins, three losses, and one tie. Seneca started the season by tying Ken- sington I2-I 2, after being behind I2-O, go- ing into the fourth quarter. The Seneca eleven marched to its first vic- tory by beating the Bennett Tigers I2-6 in a rough contest at Riverside Field. The team showed its top strength by its crushing con- quest of the Burgard Bulldogs. The team, being plagued with injuries, was weakened and went downto defeat at the hands of the East Orientals, South Park, and Tech. 62 Recognition was given to six of the ln- dians. Walter Herod, Max Czemerynski and Phil Lazzaro were chosen for the second All- High Team. Honorable Mention was given to Thomas Domanski, Sam Incardona and Syl- vester Szymanski. We can indeed be proud of these boys and all the Indians on this fine team. rv EN -N ' ...F to , -ft' Coach Novak I I If MP ' apt! Under the able leadership of Mr. Angelo Suozzi, the Seneca Indians started the 1956 campaign with six returning lettermen. Seneca, after many years, played its home games at home with large crowds of Seneca students cheering the team on. The Indians started the season with a loss, but avenged themselves by beating Riverside on our home court. Seneca won three of eleven games played, but they were all hard fought, and in most cases, lost only by a few points. The starting unit usually consisted of Gary Fix, Willie Watson, Michael Balk, Nick Mor- tellaro, DuVal Thompson, Joseph Davis, and Herbert Kirchberger, alternating at their positions. Mr. Suozzi did a fine iob of coaching, and can be proud ofthe sportsmanlike conduct of the team. The prospects for next year indicate a promising season with the return of ten veterans. Willie Watson made second team in the sportswriters' ratings, while Gary Fix gained honorable mention. This year, with tive returning lettermen, Seneca's hopes of winning the Columbia Cup were high. With the fine coaching and guidance of Mr. Thayer, the team finished in a first place tie. ln the first triangular meet, Seneca scored a perfect vic- tory over Burgard and Lafayette. South Park and Emerson also met defeat, as the Indians went on to win their second meet. Our final triangular meet was postponed because of . Schuh, R. Pawlik, P. Wiertel, J. Weig, R. ln the All-High Cross-Country Race, the team scored a low score of fifty-eight points. This, however, was matched by an inspired team from McKinley. Charles Munzert, fin- ishing fourth, and Tom Wangler, fifth, received All-High honors. Ken Schaefer l7l, Geoffrey Shelton l2Ol, and Tom Alicata l22l, were the other members of Seneca's first All- High Cross-Country Championship Team. Henry Pawlowski, a sure thing for All-High, got sick during the race but still poor weather conditions. finished in the first half of the field. -4 1 Mx S ETX is 4 A 5, J X TJTLSQ-a+ - 'f S S x.. The 1955 tennis season found Seneca with six of its team lost by graduation and moving out-of-town. Thus, new talent had to be utilized. Nevertheless, the players exhibited ex- cellent spirit and good sportsmanship in the face of tough opposition. The new members of the squad worked hard and should make a good showing next season. Although the record looks poor, many of the matches were closely contested. Three of the first doubles matches lAl Golda and Dave Dilll, for example, had to go three sets or until six o'clock. The morale of the team did not suffer and the lost games were as enthusiastically played as the first. With the school under one roof and with a larger fresh- man enrollment, tennis should attract more try-outs and so produce a winning team this year. The committee keeps order on the buses pro- vided forthe school's use. It has had the pleasure of being the guests of the Niagara Fron- tier Transit System, who provided a special tour of their shops. The members then realized the importance of their iob and the great amount of equipment that they had to protect. They also saw the equipment necessary to maintain these buses. Since the reputation of the school is so important, the committee must do an outstanding iob. This it has done. When the records were checked at the N.F.T. office, we were proud to hear that Seneca, because of the efforts of the Transportation Committee, has never had any complaints about conduct of the students from people who ride with them. Our record with the N.F.T. is something that we can be proud of. This record will help the students when the time to take their places in industry comes. All the members of this committee should be congratulated for the work they have done and will continue to do to keep the reputation of Seneca unsullied and respected by all. 96 TRANSPGRTATIGN CCDMMITTEE Sul TRANSPORTATION Rowl W Kollofz B Allen T Allcoic W Kowclewskl R Kommskl M Butler G Bennet! Our Student Council also helps to create a feel- ing of harmonious fellowship between our teachers and students. 98 I t t 't I 1 3, L 1 t 1 1 1 2 Y S XS lt llIlll iQ4Tll9 ,Q f 3 -2- 11- f l Q 'Zi COUNCIL -' 42.2, iff! -',. i. ,ii I ' I TRIBAL COUNCIL-ALTERNATES-Row l: T. Therefore, cooperation was the key to our tremendous success. It also gives us a feeling of great pride that this practice of stu- dent government in our school will serve to prepare our students for the roles of citizens of tomorrow. We hope that in the near future other schools will follow our example of student government. lt is also our hope that student government will continue to be successful at Seneca. 99 K BUILDING ,l ,www-N 'wmMw --v--'nw it-A Kneelung M Mercuruo Seated Rowl G Sorrentmo D Polls G Arnst Seated Row 2 A Ventruce R Mnzerkuewlcz E Helna Standmg E Frampton R Fuerst H Karchberger J Zelasko G Fax R Capozzu J Mallon G Lenhard J Herrscher R Graney R Gnczkowsku J Wlrth N Fegal The Buuldnng or Hall Committee, as nt ns more commonly called, ns one of the most powerful dnvusnons of the Student Government at Seneca Thus commnttee ns composed of about suxty semors and twenty lumors who guve up their study pernods to keep order nn the halls Orngmally, only sensors were supposed to serve on thas commuttee, but some study periods had no sensors, so tumors were allowed to serve ummeduotely On regular study peruods, that ls, study peruods contalmng both sensors and lumors, the lumors were allowed to serve the last two months of the year, so that they wull be tralned for the followmg year The purpose of thus commlttee IS to keep order In the halls during and between classes and to make sure that no student IS nllegally out of class Mr Engel and the faculty can be proud of the work thus commlttee as domg thus year, wnll do next year and, we are sure, In the years to come lOO '1 15 25 1 rt c ' .,--c WKQ- ' ,Me K I X K 4, S J G Q Q Q l 2 l. The Civil Defense organization is divided into two groups: the rescue unit and wardens. The rescue unit takes a rescue training course at school and its members belong to the New York State Civil Defense Commission. The wardens' iobs are to maintain general order during the air raids and fire drills, they also inspect the lockers to help to keep the school clean and to prevent fire hazards. During the year mock air raids are conducted for practice so that team work can be perfected. Because of these mock air raids, the committee has received state-wide praise, and even commendation from the head of the New York State Commission. The system for the mock air raids at Seneca has been used as a model for many other schools in the area when they formed their own civil defense setup. The Fire Prevention and Safety Committee was consolidated with the Civil Defense Committee to increase efficiency because their duties were very similar. The chairman and two co-chairmen went to Albany to take a rescue training course in order to instruct the members in the rescue unit. This training will prove especially valuable in the event of a real attack when trained personnel will be absolutely essential if casualties are to be adequately treated. 106 '1 s., 1 C I VII. Students of Seneca Vocational Hugh School have in the last few months been introduced to a new program adopted by the Board of Education, to educate the future drivers of America to better and safer practices on the streets and highways of the country Because of the limited time and facilities, Driver Education was offered only to the Sen lor Student who qualified scholastucally and who did not possess an operators Incense The curriculum consisted of two class lectures per week for a period of twenty weeks The actual practice behind the wheel lasted for ten weeks with a half hour per week for each student The benefits derived from satisfactorily completmg the course are rich and rewardmg to the teen age driver The State Motor Vehicle Bureau will issue a blue card permitting a seventeen-year-old to drive at night. The insurance companies have also conceded a substantial deduction to policies of young, capable and qualified driver-education stu- dents. To help educate the prospective driver Joseph Snider Motors has graciously contrib- uted a dual-controlled, l956 Plymouth Sedan to the school to develop a well-rounded driving program. Since this is the first program of its kind in Buffalo Schools, it is the hope and desire of the administrators that the experiment in Driver Education will be a success, so that in the very near future the program can be offered to everyone. ll5 f f 'Sw PGSTER COMMITTEE CDF' 5 l If .A v'Df' s 4 -., ,.,bll 4 -X ,zh fi , fsxwl' , ,ff i L Owf 143.5- 451 ' 'X X 0 Q x . Shortly after the beginning of the school year, Mr. Engel came up with an idea on how to keep the bulletin boards of Seneca clean and up-to-date with information about ac- tivities throughout the school. A committee was formed and work began. Posters were made for the Christmas holidays, civil holidays, and Easter. Besides that, the committee posted notices of all sports, ed- ucational programs, social data, etc. Some of the best work of the committee was done in promoting sales for the year- book. Soon new boards will be put up in the new building, thus calling for new members who will enlarge the committee. The Poster Committee has become a well-developed ac- tivity at Seneca under the supervision of Mr. Schwartz. 1 .,,k LIBRARY COMMITTEE-Row 1: G. Bennett, J.Thornton, R. Gradl, J.
