Simmons of the To the Graduates: Each year as principal it has been my privilege to write a message to the graduates. Many times it has been difficult to know what to say. This year is different. So much has happened during the past four years in which you fellows have taken such an active part that it is hard to pick out the most important. In years to come all these will be fond memor- ies to you. Four years ago you saw the start of our committee form of student government. As freshmen you were not eligible to be on the committees. However, your cooperation and interest were so fine that its success was assured. Since then you have been the committees, and your conducting of these has been so outstanding that our committee government has a reputation far and wide. Con- gratulations to you. You have helped to make an enviable record in sports. Your teams might not have always been on top, but every competitor has greatly respected your hard and clean fight for victory. You have an excellent record in extra-curricular activities, assemblies, and intramural sports. You have gone farther than iust having organizations sponsored by the school. These activities such as legion baseball, rifle club, bowling club, wrestling club, cross-country group, Hi-Y, and Indian dancers, have helped .to promote the good name of Seneca because of your conduct and behavior. You have represented the school to great credit at inter-school affairs, meetings and conventions. You have seen the start and completion of our million dollar addition. Although you were born a few years too soon to enioy as a student the advantages of the new building, your record has helped to make such an addition possible. As alumni, you will come back to profit from the oppor- tunities it offers. With your four years of high school over, what next? That is easy. You will continue to im- prove fthe reputation of your Alma Mater. In industry, in the armed service, in all your living, you will want to build on what you have gained here, and bring added honors to yourself and your school. Good health, good luck and success to all of you. Your principal, LaVerne H. Engel - - A , - .1 -. .- Y 1 1 b L -V Y v- - - v. if Munir 2 'Tris g. Secretaries Mrs. Gertrude C. Keenan Miss Gertrude T. Look at the size of that guyl was a common expression that we used when marvelling at the stature of the upper-class- men. Everything here was strange to us, and the readiustment pe- rios was rather difficult at first. The teachers, curriculum, and especially our classmates were so new to us. The machinists were lucky in that they came directly to the main building, and not to the annex, as did the electricians. As far as sports are concerned, there wasn't much done by our class, except for Big John Regan, who, although a fresh- rpan, gained an honorable mention on the All-High Football eam. Our sophomore year was highlighted by two memorable e- vents. Mr. Robert E. May, formerly assistant-principal in charge of the annex, was transferred to the main building to re- place Mr. William Pritchard as assistant-pI'ir1CipCIl, who in turn took the ost of assistant-principal of Girls' Vocational High School. The other was the passing on of Mr. Henry Shepard, photography instructor, whose classes were taken over by Mr. Victor Gilbert. ln that year, John Regan was elected to the first string of the Qif-fglq Evening News All-High Football Team, and to the second string of the Courier-Express. Also in sports, we took second place in basketball, first in track, and second in cross- country. ln baseball we stormed over everyone, but lost the championship to McKinley at Offerman Stadium. lt seems that in its third year, the class really came into the limelight. As others began to sit up and take notice, we, too, could see that we were no longer mere schoolboys, but were developing into young men. This time Regan was put on the first strings of both newspapers All-High teams, as was to be the case in his senior year. Eman- uel Phillips was elected co-chairman of the Tribal Council, as other iuniors began to take places of importance throughout the school. Class Prophecy OOD evening, ladies and gentlemen. We welcome you to the Seneca Casino. We hope that you enioy the show which we have planned for your enioyment. And now, it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you our first star of the evening. Here he is, direct from a smash en- gagement at the Club Greece, that world-famous fortune teller, Professor Emanuel Phillips. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your generous ap- plause. l will now look into my crystal ball and make my pre- dictions. l, Professor Emanuel Phillips, prophesy that twenty years from now: The sole owner of the world's largest marble producing fac- tory will be Robert Transiskus. His chief marble tester will be Gerald Wehrlin. Donald Klocke will be the tallest player on the Washington Generals' Basketball Team feven taller than Bill Spingl, and Joey Giambra will be his coach. Bill Adams will become the conductor of the New York Phil- harmonic Orchestra, and under his baton will be Ronald Pitt- man, the world's greatest classical-iazz pianist. A sad note came when it was learned that Mr. Fred J. Atz- rott, a machine sho instructor for over thirty years, was to re- tire at the end of the first term. However, an able teacher in the person of Mr. Elek Csont took over for the remainder of the year. Summing up the year's athletic achievements, we found that the varsity football team came out in second place with an im- pressive five win-one loss record, while the basketball s uad did not fare so well. ln cross-country, Seneca placed fourfla in the All-High Meet, the first of its kind. Formerly we had not competed with the academic high schools. The fourth and final year of our soioum was entered upon with mixed feelings. Whether or not it was to be an eventful one was up to the class as a whole. Looking back, we can see now that it was an eventful year -- and a successful one. Under the leadership of Emanuel Phil- lips and Ed Klingler, the Tribal Council made many advances. A new committee was added - the Escort Committee. The Student Court, a functional, active body, com rised of the var- ious committee heads, was organized. Newlliy designed pins, badges and membership cards - a different one for each commit- tee - were issued. Another honor was given to Seneca when Emanuel Phillips was elected to the presidency of the newly formed Inter-High School Student Council. Early in the first term, our class held its initial meetings. The officers elected were: Bob Yerke, president, Richard Abend- schein, vice-president, Richard Bantle, secretary, and Joseph Ciambra, treasurer. These boys, under the guidance of Mr. Thomas Glass, class sponsor, really did a fine iob as the class leaders, and deserve commendation. Everyone agreed that the year went by too quickly, and it seemed that in no time the Prom was upon us. Following that night of nights, the final exams and graduation brought the year to a swift close. The sun set on one great day, only to rise on another. Al Wilczewski, playing for the New York Yankees, will win the American League batting crown with an average of .666. The United States government, of which Bob Yerke will be the President, will grant the following Seneca students a permit to build a :pace ship to fly to Mars: James O'Connor, Jack Meegan, an Richard Orr. They will hire as crew members, Fred Gross, chief pilot, John Skalski, navigator, James Ball, radar operator, and Lawrence Stapleton, chef. Charles Otto and Dick Teeft will become science teachers at Seneca. Seneca 's school custodian and chief engineer will be Daniel Bingel and Gerald Van Wie, respectively. John Red Regan, as head coach of Notre Dame, will have as his assistants, Ed Murray, Raymond Holland, and Richard Vitovitch. Bob Dudek will be working asascout for the Cleveland Browns. Mr. May's iob will be taken over by Bob Holcomb. Sen . 'fl A J I. . ml L :yn Jail R A r with ,J L V L , N, ff 'x , X, ,S . . ' ' . 0 . -' .my . if Jax- Rn -X ,125 ,2- A ,fu ,L ..- 7 nb 19 THOMAS F. Anthony Ventrice, Mgr. OACH NOVAK, our able football professor, was greeted by only three returning lettermen at the beginning of the season. The squad of green boys soon was transformed into a coordinated team. This year's team average weight was one of the heaviest in Seneca's football histor . The line weighed in at 210 and the backfield tipped the scalles at 177. Seneca opened its twentieth season of Harvard Cup Football on a victorious note, defeating Lafayette 20 - 12. Kensington soon cut down the Indians in a 6 - 0 thriller. The warriors avenged their defeat by trouncing their next three opponents. The seemed to have reached their peak when they played East High on Thanksgiving Day. The Indians did everything but score. They piled up 218 yards to 62 yards for East and held the edge in First Downs 14 to 5. East's lone score came on a punt return. We placed third, and tied with two other schools, in the final league standings with a 4 win - 2 loss record. Although we only placed third, three of our stalwarts, John Regan, Ed- ward Murray, Robert Yerge, were placed on both all-High Teams. Walter Herod made the second team of the Buffalo Eve- ning News All-High Team and received honorable mention from the other city paper. Max Czemerynski and Roy Ledwin received honorable mention from both papers. Coach Novak will again, next year, be met by only three returning lettermen. He will have the whole center of his line to build around. With this solid wall to pave the way, Seneca's warriors may at last bring the coveted cup home. - . ,,,v,, - 'A' 'xv ,,..v Seneca 20 - Lafayette I2 Seneca 0 - Kensington 6 Seneca I3 - Burgard 6 Seneca I9 - South Park 0 Seneca I4 - Grover Cleveland O Seneca 0 - East 6 .fm nn... Basketball S the new coach at Seneca, Mr. Angelo Souzzi had an extremely difficult task facing him. He had to rebuild a completely new team with only one boy to build around, Alois Wilczewski, who had seen a little action the previous year. Lacking in experience but not in spirit, the team started the i955 campaign. The starting unit usually consisted of Gary Fix, Edward Murray, Willie Watson, and Alois Wilczew- ski with Michael Bulk and Richard Kyser, alternating at their positions. ln losing in the first half season, the team gained poise and finally hit the winning trail against Kensington. The record picked up as Seneca won two in a row and almost completed the year in a victory streak, losing only to Burgard after a fiercely fought overtime contest. Mr. Souzzi developed great confidence in his squad and can look forward to greeting ten returning veterans during the next basketball season. Willie Watson, the team's high scorer, gained recognition in the Bujgbr Evening News. COAC H SO UZZI T U: Y MT'f 'f - 5 M-.Mai VW ,Z Pj ..4. k P' T b i 1-ww., Xp. X 4 Sd., First Row: A. James, R. Cross Country HEN it came time to close the records for the T954-l955 cross country season, they showed that Seneca, with four lettermen returning from last year and additional members, had made a splendid record. With the coaching and guidance of Mr. Thayer, the team was successful in winning two of the three triangular meets and placed third in the All-High Meet. ln the All-High Cross Country Meet the first five men across the line for Seneca were as follows: Charles Munzert f9j, Henry Pawlowski CMJ, Kenneth Schaefer 091, Geoffrey Shel- ton 1251 and Alois Wilczewski f29D. This year we had the big- gest turnout for Cross Country that we have ever had. We hope it will continue. Baseball NDER the able guidance of Coach Henry Thayer, Seneca's i954 baseball team was outstanding in posting a 4 win - l loss record in regular league play. Seneca, in defeating Grover Cleveland i3 to 3 in the play-offs, secured third place in the final school standings. The team as a whole batted at an average of .384 and fielded at a clip of .952. Among Seneca's returning lettermen from the i953 team were Ronald Kolb, Richard Kopankiewicz, William Schmid, Robert Simoncelli, Robert Shivinsky, John Seneca 4 - Technical 3 Seneca 5 - Bennett 8 Seneca 3 Rydzik, and Alois Wilczewski. Seneca's lone defeat was at the hands of Bennett. The game, which was played at Shiller Park, ended with Seneca trailing 8 - 5. Tennis ENECA opened its third tennis season on May 5, 1954 under the coaching of Mr. Edward Bingert. The beginning of Mr. Bingert's first tennis season at Seneca was saddened as Seneca lost to Bennett 5 - 0. The team then lost to Tech. They were victorious against their third rival which was South Park. The next seven schools we played were victorious over us. This was due to the fact that there were only three returning lettermen from our previous year's squad. This year we played an eleven-match season instead of the previous year's six-match season. We ended our schedule ona winning note b beating Emerson 4 - I. This gave us a 2 win - 9 loss record Ear the season. Although our record appears poor, the experience gained and the enioyment of our participation greatly outweigh any disappointments that may come along. The future looks bright for next ear with five out of ten lettermen returning to give the squad the needed experience to make a team. 72 SQUAD LE TTERMEN Richard Bantle Richard Dietrich David Dill Jerry Ferraraccio Joseph Hagen Seneca . . . . 4 Seneca . . . . 3 Seneca . . . . 0 Seneca . . . . 0 Seneca . . . . 2 Seneca . . . . 2 Seneca . . . . The closing of Fosdick-Masten and Hutchinson-Central in 1953 brought about the merging of the two track leagues into one big eleven-team league. Triangular meets were held in- stead of the customary dual meets. Seneca's first tri-meet with Technical and South Park was postponed. In the Warriors' second clash with the academic stars, we lost to East and Burgard. In the third and final tri- meet, we lost to Lafayette and Bennett. We qualified four individuals for the All-High Meet. Two of our stalwarts came through. They were Jack Nleegan, who finished fourth in the mile, and Eugene Donohue,.who also finished fourth in the 880-yard event. We finished in tenth place with a total score of two points. Klinger Cheerleaders HIS ear we had a fine group of cheerleaders com- poserllof three veterans: Frederick B. Bruch since his freshman year, Edward G. Klingler and Donald Wrobel since their junior years, and three new recruits: Richard Siracuse, a sophomore, Robert Fuerst and Ronald Graney, iuniors. In preparation for the big game against our arch rival, Burgard, there was a special assembly at which Mr. Pritchard, the great, was present. A special stunt and that go-go-go of our ex-assistant principal boosted our morale sky high. The following Saturday at All-High Stadium, the beams shook from Seneca's cheers. On top of this it was Coach Novak's birthday. So what could we do but win in the last thirty seconds with a touch- down and an extra point. The final score was Seneca 'I3 - Burgard 6. This is iust another example of Seneca spirit. With Turkey Day in sight, the Jumpin' Jacks of Sen- eca began to try to boost the attendance to the all im- portant game with East. Because of our loss to them last season, the key word around the halls of S.V. H.S. was ---- Revenge. With the help of the cheerleaders 'our spirit rose heavenward. Although, the turnout at the game was terrific and the cheering was the wildest you ever heard, it was all in vain, for we lost 6 to 0. On letter days the boys would show their gratitude by cheering for the football team, the basketball team, the cross-country team, and the track team as loudl and as enthusiastically as you ever heard in your whore life. The live-wireness for these assemblies was brought out , A . .. -, ee esp. R. Graney R. Siracuse F. Bruch by the guys bearing the green S, who reached out and into every corner of the auditorium to get the loudest yell they could. Our onl hope is that in future years Seneca's boys in white will have as good a group and as good support as they had this year. These are iust some of the comments that you would hear if you went into Mr. Gilbert's room to watch the CHlEFTAIN'S art and layout staff at work on the yearbook. The principal aim of this group is to construct the dummy copy of the CHIEFTAIN, which is then sent to the printer. This is done by placing the pictures, actual headings, write-ups, car- toons, and captions on master copy sheets. The photography staff works hand-in-hand with the art and layout staff by taking and de- veloping all the action shots needed to complete a well-rounded yearbook. You would be surprised to find out that it was only the boys holding one of their many iam sessions in their basement band room. Regular sessions are held during seventh and eighth periods every Monday and Friday. Two French horns have already been added to the band, three tuba players and a fewmore trombonists are on their way. Some boys who will be missed greatly next year are: Robert Kalman Bari tone Horn Sal Andolina Alto Sax Bill Adams Trumpet Dick Nelson Trumpet Bill Dunn Tenor Sax Phil Giordano Clarinet With the new building and with seventy-five to one hun- dred new instruments coming next year, the band has a bright outlook . Nat on picture: S.Shepard, R. Von. wg, 1, INCE the last class in photography graduated in l954, the school had to recruit some students to take pic- tures for our newspaper and our yearbook. That is the main reason why the Camera Club was organized. As the old saying goes, Many are called, but few are chosen. Such was the case with the Camera Club. Many students applied for membership, but it was im- possible to use all of them. The club had many things to do besides taking pic- tures. All pictures had to be planned carefully before they were taken. After they were taken, they had to be processed. Since the yearbook is the biggest iob of the year, and since it takes a great amount of time, we want the photography work to be of the highest quality that is possible. We hope that everyone will be satisfied with our work this year. To give you interesting and life-like pictures as well as unusual candid shots has been our goal. That we have succeeded in doing so is our hope. is 53 f F 3 si V 3 ' i R. Habirzreuther, I. Voas, R.McDivitt, R. Makowski, I. Brunner, L. Siwinski, D.Evertt. Ad Club ALESMANSHIP in any line of endeavor is extremely im- portant to success. In order to produce our yearbook, it takes more than the money collected through subscriptions, it takes a corps of good salesmen who are sincere and convincing enough to impress upon the public the advisability of adver- tising in the CHIEFTAIN. The members of the Ad Club have done just that, for to be a member of the club, you have to sell at least a page of ads. These boys, probably more than others, realize that the pro- duction of a yearbook that must be paid for by the students needs advertising money, if the students are not to pay a pro- hibitive price for their individual books. If more students had the get up and go of these boys, our CHIEFTAIN would be an even better book than it is, for with extra money, many of ourideas, that cannot now be used, could be brought to fruition. It is the hope of the Ad Club's members that the club will continually improve its salesmanship ability and increase its mem- bership, so that each year's record will be better than the preceding year's. - fy 89 Li.y M Qin- X 'I' New ww, I rf ,u '7 .K n A .Ugg U D asap Umar: Q Q s me ,zu First Row: R.Giet1, G.Si1verman, J.Gioe1i, J.Downey, M. He is handed a sheaf of papers, among them a sheet of ink blots and red pencil marks. The next day the folder is returned, filled with neatly typed articles. A quick recheck, the office check, and t e school paper goes to press. Several days pass. Meanwhile, the art staff produces a cartoon as the business staff sells a number of advertisements. Then one morning, the galley sheets arrive, four or five long, narrow papers. The layout staff is notified and sets to work, as copyreaders are rounded up. The galleys are cut, arranged, pasted, rearranged. Hey, where's that picture? .... How about utting this ad here? Then, it's finished. Afew more rechecks and it's off for final printing. On a Wednesday afternoon, halfway through seventh period, there is a bustling heard in the corridor, as the classroom door opens. would you distribute these to your eighth period class? The iob is done. There is the story, on the first page. But if it were not for the untiring efforts ofa great many boys, we would never have made it. AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ---- THE REDSKINS Because of all-round fine fielding and hitting, the Sen- eca Redskins was one of the most outstanding American Legion Baseball teams in the Delaware Park League. Getting off on the right foot, the Redskins blanked the Dodgers 3 - 0. The boys, full of their first victory, banged the Cubs on a fine pitching iob done by Sal Zandano. The next team to cross our warpath were the boys from Canisius who beat us in a thrilling I0 - 8 game. This game was high- lighted by a grand-slam home run in the top of the ninth inning. Because of a stormy day and an approaching holiday, we were forced to forfeit the next game. This automatical y put us out of the league. This was a great team to play with. If the same boys get together next year, there will be a hot time for any one who steps on the Redskins' warpath. William Adams Richard Kaiser James Lindsay Paul Megs Robert O'Hara The members of this team were Richard Stein Donald Tate Robert Transiskus Anthony Trigilio Sal Zandano SENECA WARRIORS The Seneca Warriors, captained by William Protzmann, finished second to the Cavaliers in the Daly Post League. During the season the Warriors defeated the Seneca Indians. Then with the help of the Warriors' big guns, Arthur Hohensee and Edward Kennedy, they squeezed by Kensington. The league-leading Cavaliers ended the tribe's winning streak by defeating them on a rain-soaked field. SQ UAD Donald Sinicki Gerald Gadra Dominick Ferrentino Edward Kennedy Kenneth Richard Siracuse William Protzmann Arthur Hohensee William Smith William Kork Joseph DePerro Schafer Edwin Fish, Mgr. JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL Mr. Thayer, our able baseball coach, decided last year to give the boys that were to represent Seneca in baseball this year some first-hand experience. He organized a Junior Varsity and scheduled five games with top J. V. teams around the city. Three of these games were rained out. In the remaining two the boys looked promising. They took one from Bishop Timon and dropped the other to Saint Joseph I - O. The boys will be looking ahead to this year's season and will be limbering up their bats to bring to destruction their league rivals. Kenneth Latke Roy Ledwin Alfred Saluzzo Richard Vitovitch Alois Wilczewski, Mgr. Donald Beiber Leon Buczkowski Robert Dudek Edward Kennedy Edward Kowalski AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ---- SENECA CHIEFS The Seneca Chiefs, captained by Fred Naegler, had bad luck in the Cazenovia Post League. The team finished the season with a I win - 2 loss record. Paced by the big bat of Leon-Buczkowski and Roy Ledwin, the Chiefs beat the Al Cohens in a thrilling 8 - 6 contest. They dropped the second game to the Travelers by a I5 - 3 decision. They also lost the third game to the Shamrocks. This eliminated the tribe from further play. With the new equipment and accommodations that have been ordered for the shops and gym, our school will be one of the finest of its type in the state, if not, in the country. The seniors will be saying good-bye to all this, but perhaps they can say hello to it when they return as visi- tors. With its membership of fifteen on the alert, all safety precautions were taken so that in case of an actual attack, all would know how to act, where to go, and why they have to obey the rules and regulations set up by the committee. The importance of this group will be greatly appreciated in the future. Doubtlessly it will become one of the most important committees in the Student Government. Their chief duties are operating the projector, the portable slide machine and the spotlight in the auditorium during assembly programs. The crew, with the guidance of Mr. Hellems, faculty advisor, is capable of repairing all the equipment. ill During assemblies, staff members take charge to see that the equipment is set up for the program. An operator is also provide to run an educational film upon the request of a teacher. Another less publicized duty is to see that order is kept in the room while a film is being shown. Cafeteria URING the school year our three Cafeteria Committees have been doing a splendid iob, despite the fact that the school's cafeteria room has been split into two sections be- cause of our new building . These committees were created some years back to maintain order in the cafeteria during our three lunch periods. Each group elects its own captains, lieutenants, and also its own members . lf a student is caught by the monitors throwing papers and trash around, he stays at the end of the period to clean the entire room. The monitors also try to eliminate some of the disturbance during lunch time. In past years this group has proved that with the coopera- tion of the students, it can supervise the cafeteria without the help ofthe faculty. HE principal purpose of the Locker Committee is, first of ull, to maintain order where lockers are lo- cated during dismissal time. Every day before dismissal time members of this group are stationed in their assigned positions on all of the floors, including the basement, of the building. The every-day duty ofa committeeman is to maintain order, and to prevent yelling, pushing, and other un- necessary noises caused by the students while getting their belongings from their lockers. During the past year this organization, combined with the Fire Prevention and Safety Committee, peri- odically checked lockers for litter and fire hazards. They've also made signs, and painted white lines to maintain traffic in the basement where the locker room is located. The locker room was locked at all times by the members except during lunch time to prevent any unfortunate incidents. This committee has had a very successful year. It is very proud of its record. .-......, H4 Us . i f ,Q s Nu V . ADVERTISERS ,I f 0 . lf in in lmnnq, R' Q i Q .. . 'o ' 1 x s - 4. ,156 'f '- N - AV Q . ,RIN gil' ' x f . mf,- ,.. .
