Simons ofthe 5 f To the Graduates: Four years ago you seniors entered Seneca Vocational High School at the same time I became principal. We have experienced four very interesting and successful years together. The active part you have taken in school affairs has been noteworthy. C From the freshman year your class has had its share of honors. You have taken A a prominent part in our very successful athletic program. Through your participation and help, our assemblies have greatly improved. You have worked together and with the Juniors with such smoothnessthat our committees have functioned' to a degree that no school can boast of a better student organization. You have de- veloped many fine procedures in student government, and have formed new committees. This yearbook is a fine tribute to your hard work. ' During these four years you have heard much about a new building for Seneca. It probably seemed to you to be moving very slowly and at times you doubted that we would have an addition. Finally you saw the actual start of the construction. You also saw the start of the new course in television. N I Many of you no doubt hoped you could spend another year at Seneca to have the benefit of all these new facilities. However, even though you are graduating before you can enioy all these, you can feel pride in the fact that you have had a part in the preparation and have helped to make Seneca the great school it is. Your interest in Seneca cannot stop upon graduation. Everything you do will reflect back upon your school. You should continue to take an active part in the life of your alma mater. Certainly you will want to return often to share the advantages made possible by our new building, equipment and courses. As you will share in our good fortune, so also will we take great pleasure in your success in the years to come. Your principal, LaVeme H. Engel Wasil. nf I f, .v x X' fu: Nr J M-,Q M145-4 ' --v 'B ,, 'vig ROBERT E. MAY Assistant Principal JAMES A. HODGES Industrial and Educational Co-Ordinator n ALBERT B. Although the years passed all too swiftly, they will be remembered as the most fruitful of our lives. As freshmen, we were isolated from the main building and sent to the annex, thus making our re-adjustment period rela- tively easy. Although we could not take an active part in the main building activities, a fine program of intramural sports was provided for us. I'm sure we all remember the spacious gymnasium and auditorium we had the privilege of using. In foot- ball, our team's season was highlighted by a win over Kensington, ending their long winning streak, while our basketball team tied Emerson for the Yale Cup. This year was also heralded by the appointment of Mr. La Verne H. Engel as principal of Seneca. X Entering our sophomore year, we evacuated the annex and took over the main building. Immediately our presence was felt, both scholastically and athletically. Our football team fortified with numerous sophomores, swept through its league and played in the Thanksgiving Day game for the first time since 1941. In cross country, Seneca's teanf easily took the ALL-VOCATIONAL MEET for the first time since 1937. We were also fortunate to take first place in the ALL-VOCATIONAL Track Meet and fourth place in basketball competition against all schools. As juniors, we became more serious and strived to attain the high standards we were expected to reach. Once again, Seneca enioyed a successful year in sports. The Seneca football team finished the regular season with an impressive 4 wins and 1 loss record, which gave them second place in their league and the right to play on Thanksgiving Day. Don Winkle, James Miller, and Don Warzel received honorable mention. Our basketball team had a very fine season, ending in second place in the final standings. Our cross country and track teams also compiled very impressive records. Jim McEwen won an All-High medal in track by taking first place in the quarter mile in the All-Vocational Track Meet. In our senior year, as was expected, we became the school' leaders. Early in the school year, our class officers were elected. Ron Kolb was elected President while Bob Shivinsky, Clark Dix and Earl Harpster were elected Vice President, Sec- retary and Treasurer respectively. More freedom in running the school was given the students b Mr. Engel than ever before. John Kuchnicki and Larry Wynia, editors-in-chief of the CHIEFTAIN, did a bang up iob on the editorials in the yearbook, while Richard Barth, editor-in-chief of the WARRIOR, did an excellent iob in running the paper and of keeping us informed of various school activities. The year was highlighted by the importation of feminine pulchritude to enhance the Christmas and the unforgettable, no-time-limit yearbook assemblies. Our football team won second place in the newly formed league as two senior members of the team received positions on the All-High Team. They are James McEwen and Don Warzel. Our cross country, basketball, track and baseball teams all turned in good records in their leagues. The end of the senior year was signaled by the prom and then examinations. Graduation day arrived, ending one chapter of our lives and starting another. Class Prophecy GOOD evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is your emcee for the evening, Herb Breinin, giving you the highlights of the twentieth anniversary of the class of '54, This program is sponsored by WSVS-T.V. Channel 66.6 on your dial. Through- out the evening we will interview many of the celebrities from that fine graduating class of which I am one. That fine music you hear in the background is being supplied by Frank Watson and his Seneca Slickers who are now being featured at the Club Moonglow. Here's our first celebrity: his honor, the Mayor of Buffalo, Bob SimoncelIi. Thank you, Herb. This is a great night of festivity for myself and my able Police Commissioner, Bob Sperduti. This aft- ernoon Bob and his fine police force rounded up and captured the terror of the West Side, Sam Giordano, for riflinga box of cereal for the coupon, so that he could send for his space helmet. Thank you, Bob. Here's our next guest, Bill Park, the sports editor of the SOUTH BUFFALO NEWS, to tell you about the success of our fellow classmates in sports. Thanks, Herb. As you probably know, the Bean twins, Art and Al, swam the English Channel last year and are getting ready to attempt the Atlantic Ocean this coming summer. Other athletes have done well, such as: Ron Kolb in baseball with the Yankees: Jim McEwen and Don Winkle in football with the Cleveland Brownsp and Larry Stephan in basketball with the New York Knicks. I am sorry I can't stay longer, but I have to report on the fight between Jim Miller and Clark Dix for the featherweight title. Nice to have you, Bill. Looking at the far end of the room, I see John Kuchnicki and Dan Malczewski battling it out- for the U. S. Chess Championship. Among other eminent celebrities here tonight are Ron Lochocki, editor of the DEZIENNIK DLA WSZYSTKICHQ Dick Barth, editor of the BUFFALO EVENING NEWS, and Ray MacArthur, the 'crazy sci- entist' from Harvard University. The food tonight has been prepared by those three ace cooks of the Club Seneca: Ron Thomas, Bob Pulkownik, and Bob Woinar. lt is being served by Ed Ludwig and his singing waiters. These waiters are Joe Bugman, Ed Crapol, Larry Wynia, Louie Corrigan, Earl Harpster, Bob Shivinski, and Don Warzel. Here is our next guest, Nick LaMonte. How are you, Nick? Fine thanks, Herbl What do you want me to talk about? WeIl Nick, how about telling us about your new job? As you probably know when I was going to Seneca, I was always late. So, to redeem myself, I applied for the truant officer's job, and now I am trying to keep down the crime of which I was once an offender. Thank you, Nick. Well, I see our time is rushing out so I will take one more quick spin around the room. This was brought about by the closing of Fosdick-Masten and Hutchinson-Central High Schools. The old system of two leagues was discontinued in favor of one league. Each team was scheduled to pla six games. The Seneca Indians drew a rugged schedule, consisting of South Park, Kensington, Bennett, Technical, East, andy Burgard High Schools in that order. The Indians ended the season with an impressive record of 5 wins and I loss. The loss came at the hands of the East Orientals I3-0. This was a season marked by many iniuries. An incident that was impressive in this year of I954 was the postponing of a league game because of a fresh snowstorm. Because of this storm, Seneca was forced to play two games within three days, Tech on November Ilth and East on November I4th. In the final standings Seneca gained second place out of eleven teams. Coach John Novak, the Indians' able and tal- ented coach, has piled up an outstanding record in his first four years at Seneca. In this four years, he has coached his team to I7 wins, 4 ties and only 4 losses. We can indeed be proud that seven of the Indians have gained recognition in the Buffalo Evening News and the Courier- Express. The Buffalo Evening News placed two on the first All-High Team: John Regan and Jim McEwen. Five players were placed on the second team: Clark Dix, Earl Harpster, Robert Shivinsky, Donald Warzel and Donald Winkle. The Courier- Express placed the same seven players, with Donald Warzel making the first All-High Team. Carmen Battaglia replaced Mr. Leslie Boehmer as coach and had to start from scratch. With the loss of seven maior lettermen, not much hope was held for the coming season. Coach Battaglia was greeted with only one returning major letterman, Ronald Kolb. The starting team consisted mainly of Kolb, Don Winkle, Dick Kopankiewicz, Jim McEwen, Larry Stephan, and Bill Park. In all but three games Seneca was ahead at the end of the first half, but because the team lacked experience and able substitutes they were outscored in the second half. Kolb, Winkle, and Kopankiewicz led the team in scoring throughout the seasonp each of them scored over T00 points. Mr. Battaglia did a fine iob in his first year of coaching high school basketball. Through his efforts we were able to' win 4 of ii games. Kolb and Winkle each gained recognition in both the BUFFALO EVENING NEWS and COURIER-EXPRESS. Cross Country B Y the end of the l954 Cross-Country season, the Seneca harriers had been in three triangular meets. With the uniting of vocational and academic high schools this year, Seneca, under the able coaching of Mr. Thayer, placed fourth out of twelve schools in the All-High Cross Country Meet. ln the All-High Cross Country Meet the first five boys across the line for Seneca were as follows: Jack Meegan in 7th place, Roland Shelton in l9th place, Charles Munzert in 2lst place, Ronald Wynia in 24th place, and Eugene Donohue in 28th place. Baseball T HROUGH the hard work of Coach Henry Thayer and the return of four major lettermen, Seneca was able to capture the league 2 championship. The four boys were: Jim Garbacz, a pitcher, Jack Halldin, a second baseman, Art Glenn, an outfielder, and Norm Pyzikiewicz, a shortstop. lt was the strong left arm of Jim Garbacz and the big bat of Norm Pyzikiewicz that enabled us to win all six games in regular season play. After blanking our first two opponents, South Park and East, we managed to put our hits together and defeat Technical, Burgard, Kensington, and Bennett all by one run. Our next contest was against McKinley the league I champs, in Offerman Stadium. ln the championship game McKinley defeated us 5 to 0. Norm Pyzikiewicz, our shortstop, was honored by being selected on the BUFFALO EVENING NEWS All-High Team. Jim Garbacz was placed on the second team while Jack Halldin, Art Glenn and Ron Kolb received honorable mention. We, at Seneca, wish to congratulate Mr. Thayer and his team for their Fine showing during the 1953 baseball season. Through the combined efforts of our able coach, Mr. Boehmer, and the new boys, the places on the team that were vacated through graduation were filled with competent boys. After rolling to easy victories over Emerson and McKinley, the boys thought they had the title in the bag, but the up-and-coming Burgard team gave them a different attitude by coming through with a 49-49 tie. Then the boys really buckled down. When the final tabulations of the All-Vocational Meet were made, they found themselves once again champs. We were represented on the all-vocational team by Alan Littrell in the 1f2 mile run, Carmen Parisi in the mile run, and Jim McEwen in the 1f4 mile run. Tennis l N view of the fact that tennis has just been initiated at Seneca, the green indians of Seneca, under the able in- struction of Coach Henry Banas, had a rather successful season. With a nucleus of about four boys, who had some experience the previous year, Coach Banas had some finer points of tennis, which he taught to his boys. A tennis team in school competition is made up of seven players, consisting of three single players rated first, second, and third, and two teams of doubles. After school competition was over, Seneca had a record of three vic- tories and three defeats, being lower though in individual matches. The teams which Seneca subdued were Burgard, South Park, and Bennett. The teams which excelled Seneca were East, Technical, and Kensington. The Chieftain Art and Layout Staffs Y OU can listen to the Editorial Staff brag all day on how important it is to the success of THE CHIEFTAIN, but all of its work would be of little avail if it weren't for the professional touch of the Art and Layout Staffs. The Photography Staff, of course, takes all the action shots that add color to the yearbook. The develop- ing, printing, retouching, and other tasks necessary are all aptly performed by these boys. When the boys received their assignments, they immediately gathered the in- formation necessary to write their stories. These in- cluded athletic achievements, social events, school activities, and the various school organizations. The writing and the rewriting of the articles, to add 3-4 I I ' that extra polish, was next. Finally they were given that last check and pronounced ready for THE CHIEFTAIN. Another important duty of the editorial staff was the identification of each boy's picture and the gathering and checking of each graduate's accomplishments during his four years at Seneca. We are very happy to present to you, THE CHIEFTAIN of l954p and we sincerely hope that you will share with us the pride and ioy we have experienced in bringing you this yearbook. Indian Dancers T HE Indian Dancers of Seneca are dedicated to the tribe of Indians of the same name. The dancers perform on such occasions as Seneca's Moving-up Day and at any other cer- emony that needs authentic Indian atmosphere. The tribe has also performed for several groups outside school and will continue to do so. 7 By their colorful dancing, the group has planted in the minds of their audiences some of the traits and ideals of the Indian character. By first telling the story of the ceremony and then dancing it, the ideas are made known to the listeners. The members of the dance group made their own costumes, practiced and danced to- X gether, and have had many enjoyable experiences because of their association. X Q 'QP X '-Q..-., Xt xxx XT D. This switchboard serves as the main contact with the outside world. The members of this staff are a select group of boys, usually honor students, who perform their respective duties with the ease and efficiency of experienced secretaries. Besides acquiring knowledge of how to operate a switchboard properly, the operators also receive practice in receiving and giving messagesand in relaying them to their proper des- tinations. They also do clerical work, contact students for teachers, and perform many other duties necessary during a day at Seneca . With three incoming lines and one house phone it is easy to see how two operators can be kept very busy. The experience gathered by the boys who have held this position has been very valuable in developing self assurance and a quick thinking mind. Switchboard Cperators ope Z xwlgm.. WHENEVER you find it difficult to converse with a friend because of loud and vigorous sounds coming from either the auditorium or the basement practice room, you can rest assured Seneca's band sr Go, man, go. is practicing. Jam sessions, as the boys call them, are held during the first, second, third, and seventh periods every Tuesday and Friday. Constantly trying to improve, the band is al- ways coming up with something new and different. This year, the something new turned out to be Joe Wozniak and Gerald Arnst, two accordion players. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Kenneth Wells, Seneca's band takes a back seat to none. Seneca can well be proud of the boys who have contributed their time and effort to the band. ww We played at the prom. L.. F Zamborowski, H. Light, H. The Color Guard opened practically every assembly with a patriotic march down the cen- ter aisles while the students stood at attention. The flags were carried onto the stage where the bearers crossed in the middle. The American Flag was taken to the right side of the stage and the Seneca Flag to the left side. At Ronald Lochocki's signal, the students saluted the American Flag, and the country for which it stands. While Mr. Gilbert at the or- gan, Mr. Wells at the piano, and members of the band played the STAR SPANGLED BANNER, the students sang the words to this patriotic song. The members of the Color Guard, who were chosen by Mr. Boehmer on their previousyear's record with approval of their teachers, feel privi- leged to take part in this patriotic activity. 84 R. Why it's another of the Seneca Hi-Y social meetings, one of the many activities sponsored by this club. During the past year, the Seneca Hi-Y Club was considered to be one of the smoothest operating or- ganizations in school. Its purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school and community, a high standard of Christian charac- ter. Furthermore, it is an organization proud of its accomplishments and services. The club meetings, held every Thursday night at the Humboldt Y.M.C.A. under the direction of the youth director, Mr. Robert Omelia, are devoted to programs produced and directed by the Program Com- mittee. Among the social events in which the club par- ticipated are parties, dances, pop concerts, and ex- cursions. Raising and lowering the school flag, collecting canned goods for the Salvation Army, and donating money for the Red Cross and the Community Chest were some of the service proiects carried on by the club this year. This club also took part in the Youth and Gov- ernment Program held in New York last December. A delegate sponsor was sent to Albany to present it to present it to the State Legislature. Mr. Fred M. Harsch, the club advisor, believes that the club has progressed remarkably since it was reorganized in i950 and that in the future it will be- come one of the outstanding Hi-Y Clubs in the city. ,HN xv' 0 0 X l f . f 3 ' Tribal 'I' HE Tribal Council, which was originally called the Student Council, has done a splendid iob this year. We wuz robbedl Feelings were high as the boys enioyed another bowling season. As usual, there were eight teams of five boys each. The bowlers developed surprisingly fast. Most of them started with an average of 85, and now they are bowl- ing with averages from TTO to T75. The pins flewp the pins fellg behind the little black balls were the boys from Seneca. The T954 club was managed by Richard Brykp next year Richard Marchewlca will fill in the senior managing spot. Mr. Henry Thayer will be our new faculty advisor. U. N. mee ting First Row: D. Polis, R. The purpose of this club is to help the sales of advertising space in our yearbook, and to give the students ex- perience in sales promotion work. One factor that has enabled this club to capture everyone's spirit and interest is the appointment of Mr. Albert B. Buck as our faculty advisor. Boys who have been selling ads have developed their self-confidence in making business contacts. Not only has the financial success of the yearbook been assured by the sales made by our advertising staff, but also the boys have received valuable experience which will be an asset later in life. 96 ADVERTISERS R. 8.
