This is the seumd ship to bear the name, the first wasa' tour piper' lllll- ltltll which senfed from 1920 to I946. USS SEIWMFIS was designed in the late 1950's as a triple threat surface combatant, a member of the ILS. Plavys tirst class ol' guided missile destroyers. Her mission requires offensive and defensive opera- tions. alone or in support of other ships, against air, Sllffxftf and submarine threats. She has participated in many major exercises in the Atlantic and Carib- bean and completed extended deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, North Sea and Baltic, then to the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf. SEMMES' ability to fight against a variety ofthreats can be readily seen by a quick look at her weapons suite. SEMMES' main armament includes a MK 15 missile launcher capable ofhurtling both surface-to air and surface-to-surface missiles at any inbound target. The ship also has two 5 !54 caliber dual purpose guns, an eight celled ASROC Ianti-sub- marine rocketl launcher and six torpedo tubes.
