The 1953-54 Student Council got off to a good start with the first big dance of the year. The theme School Days was appropriately carried out and helped everyone get into the proper spirit after a nice long vacation. Homecoming was under the leadership and super- vision of the Student Council also. All clubs and classes contributed to the parade and all homerooms entered energetically into the bulletin board contest. Prizes were awarded to the winning rooms: first place-Mr. Ganasg second place-Mrs. Bisbeeg third place-Miss Stevens. S.I-l.S. was really in the Christmas spirit after the decoration of the balcony by the Student Council. Pine branches, large candles, and lights were used in this display. Many interesting and educational chapel programs were planned by the program committee. The coun- cil also provided for additional amplifiers in the audi- torium, line markers on the football field, strings of colored lights for dances in the gym, and new dance records. Being a service organization, the Key Club often gives its time and money to the school, town, and nation. During the summer, our club held two party- meetingsg one at the beach and one at Rock Springs. This is the first time in many years the Key Club has been active in the summer. ln December, the club sent four of their members to the State Convention in West Palm Beach. This month they also sponsored the annual Key Club Christmas Ball, which was a smashing success. BA Under the outstanding leadership of Mr. E. H. Cowley and a fine staff of officers, the band experi- enced its most successful year. At the football games in the fall, the band present- ed a series of entertaining and colorful half-time shows. Prior to Christmas, the flash and spirit of the band was displayed in Christmas parades in Sanford and Orlando. But the second day of March, 1954, is the day ATTE, . that will be remembered by all the members of the band. On that day, the band marched down the streets of New Orleans in the Mardi Gras parade, and later all the members attended the Coronation Ball. Then came the annual district contest held in DeLand, Where the band made a fine showing as a group as well as in the solo and ensemble divisions. At the end of the year, the band played at grad- uation exercises. Ol:FlClfRS First Row, Left to Right: Marvin, Rose- mary, Ronni, Nancy, Rodman. They were present at all the home football, basketball, and baseball games and ITIOSI of the out-of-town games boosting the teams to victory. The Pep Club cooperated with the band in giving some very good half-time entertainment. They also marched in several parades and were always willing to help with civic projects. During the Christmas season the halls of S.H.S. were filled with the Christmas spirit when the Pep Club decorated a tree in the front hall. The Basketball and Baseball Banquet given by the club was a huge success. The year ended with the annual Pep Club initiation party. Charlie Russell Lunatics and romance made an entertaining theme for this yearls tlunior Play, Nuts and Bolts, which was directed by Miss Collette. The story took place in an insane asylum owned by Clarice Craft. Terrelle Nel- son, jim Brown, and jean Kennedy with her son, W'el- don Bridges, came to the asylum for cure of phobias, but mainly to search for the fifteen thousand dollars which was hidden there by Miss Boltis deceased brother. Poor thing, he's faintecl. Roger Garner, whom everyone believed to be Dr. joy, the psychiatrist, was finally found to be an escaped inmate from an asylum when Charlie Russell, an intern, came in search of him. Allen Maffett, Rochelle Eu' banks, and Minerva Smith, servants at the asylum, added hilarity bv their actions. Ronnie Robison as Twink Starr finally got in the good graces of Miss Bolt when he found the hidden money and turned it all over to her. ln return for this Ronnie was permitted to marry her niece, Benita, who was portrayed by Dorothy Hollo- way. The unexpected actions of the lunatics kept the audience guessing throughout the entire program. YOU'r0 S0 impetuous! Help! Let me go! I'm so glad you're here! SENIUR OUR MISS B MISS BROOKS . . . Jeanette Cleveland A delightful comedy, Our Miss Brooksf' was staged by the seniors this year, and directed by Mrs. Boyd Cole- man. Sandra Dunn as Miss Brooks was constantly bick- ering with Coach James Davis for use of the gym, and since Jimmy Wade and Gibson Bates were in the pro- duction of Lost Horizon, he was missing two basket- ball players. Sheila Browning, a nobody in school, was given the lead in this play, and Patsy Collins, daughter of Jeanette Cleveland, a school board member, was en- raged by the romantic scenes between Jimmy XVade and Sheila. Stanley Katz, the principal, and Nancy Roun- tree, a teacher, were always criticizing all of Miss Brooks' work. However, Nliss Brooks had a friend in the li- brarian, Rosemary Garner. Grace Marie Stinecipher, Joni Saunders, Pat Bell, Gloria Hampton, Anne Ransbottom, and Joyce Jones were other students who took part in Lost Horizonfi The play was a wonderful success and was enjoyed by everyone. But what about basketball practice? Dress rehearsal A last minute look at those lines. You broke that vase on purpose! Mending properties for their play. But where does this go ? ATHLETICS J. Fox R. APOPKA 13 The opening game this year proved a real thriller. The Apopka squad boasting a very strong team led the Feds most of the game. Jimmy Butler tied the score at 6 all as he scam- pered around end for Sanford, and in the final quarter with Apopka leading 13 to 6, Bubba Bisbee, converted lineman, re- ceived the kick-off and flew 88 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good and the game ended in a tie. SANFORD 26 ............ EUSTIS 0 In their first out-of-town appearance Sanford battered the Eustis eleven 26 to 0 with the one-two punch of Bisbee and Jones. The Feds after a slow starting half came back to score three TDs in the second halfg one a 28-yard aerial from Bisbee to Jones. The line boosted by lettermen Carter and Hannum once again showed their strength. SANFORD 13 ........... LEESBURG 7 Bad weather didnit hamper the Celery Fed spirit as the Feds nosed OLII the favored Leesburg Jackets in Leesburg. The Jackets scored early in the game and led 7 to U until the third quarter when Sanford scored. The startling play of the game came early in the last quarter when Bisbee reeled off a 45-yard touchdown run to give Sanford the lead which they never lost. SANFORD 0 ........... PALATKA 7 By the fate of Old Lady Luck Sanford came out for the first time this season on the short end of the score. On the kick-off the Maroons took the ball on their own eleven yard line and gradually made their way for their first and last TD. From this point on Sanford's defense held Palatka to only two more first downs. This was truly a hard fought game with a last minute desperation buck by fullback John Jones coming only inches from tying the game. Sanford outplayed the Maroons in virtually every department. SANFORD 0 ......... KETTERLINUS 7 In spite of the determination to bring back a victory over St. Augustine, once again Sanford came out the loser in the annual game. Sanford put up a hard battle only to lose in the closing minutes. The Sanford team held their larger op- ponents almost constantly throughout the game. Southpaw ace passer, Bisbee, made a new S.H.S. record in this game com- pleting five out of twelve passes for a total of 110 yards. lt was a hard-fought, and heart-breaking loss for the Feds. J. Whatley J. Houk FED' SANFORD 14 ...... . WINTER PARK 13 A strong Sanford team, determined not to lose again, gave the haughty XVildcats their first defeat of the season. Through- out the game our mighty line sparked by Hannum and Beh- rens Constantly threw the Cats for losses. In the second quarter a pass from Bisbee to jones set up our first touchdown, with Jones scoring several plays later. Minutes later a XVinter Park fumble gave the Feds their second scoring opportunity. The golden toe of Fox gave Sanford the much needed extra point for a win. SANFORD 20 ......... NEW SMYRNA 0 Topping off a full day of parading and other gala home- coming events Sanford made the day complete with a trium- phant victory over the New Smyrna Barracudas. It was the Feds first F.F.C. victory. The charging Fed line threw the Barracuda offense for nine separate losses and held them for a scant gain of twenty-four yards. Ross Hannum and Larry Bates were standouts in the line while Bisbee and W'ade stood out in the offensive play. SANFORD 20 .......... SEABREEZE 18 Shifting into high gear in the first half the Feds com- pletely outclassed the Seabreeze eleven. Hawkins scored first for Sanford, W'ade tallied for the second touchdown, and Bisbee the third. The tide turned in the last half as Seabreeze took command of the ball game with a mixed running and passing attack. For the second straight time Fox's extra points gave us the necessary margin. SANFORD 14 ......... EDGEWATER 6 For the first time in twenty-one years Sanford came out high team in the annual Sanford-Orlando game. It was only because of the splendid spirit and determination of the boys that this record was broken. The line play of both teams was good, but Sanford was a particular qgandout with the herculean play of Ross Hannum, Harcffd Pate, and Larry Bates. Randall Reynolds and Johnnfjones tdod out in defensive play as did Bisbee and Hawkins' fn tbl offense. 1 5 A .. .5 ' SANFORD 7 . . ., ,' iv' .,Vr'. . Out of a schedule of twelve games the Feds dropped six with a margin of 5 points or less. The other losing battles were certainly not runaways. The Feds' only victories came over Leesburg in the opener and a very impres- sive victory over a much favored Gainesville quintet. The season record not being too impressive, the squad was determined to do well in the tournament, but dropped out after losing the first game with New Smyrna. High point honors this season go to Bubba Bisbee with a total of 98 points, which gives Bubba a 7.5 game average. Close behind Bisbee in the scoring department was Center Joel Moss with 89 points, giv- ing Moss a 6.8 game average. Bisbee also was the only Fed man to place on the All East Conference Team. Fine coaching and good cooperation from Coach Scott and the team didn't seem to help a great deal. but with a little luck next year we should have a winning season. J.V.'s play it cool. lllA1'l0Nll DU' ln l9S3, Sanford, with a fine pitching staff com- posed of Mighty Hel Fleischer and Jim Jock Rrider, came out with a six-five season record. Aided by experience gained on the American Legion team, Sanf0rd's defensive playing ranked very high in the E.F.C. The heavy bat of outfielder Frank Stafford earned him the highest batting average on the team-.39S. Second to Stafford was star third baseman, Junior Metts. Lost from the infield this year are catcher Terry Cordell, shortstop Dil Sheffield, third baseman Junior Metts, and utility man, Russell Mann. Frank Stafford and Joe Hutchison will be missing in the outfield and a big dent in the pitching staff will be caused by the loss of ace hurler Mel Fleischer. Although these seven seniors will be missed, Sanfordxs prospects for the '54 season are good with veterans Bisbee, Ferrell, Krider, McCall, Hannum and Bates returning.
