Mrs. lean Moseley is the secretary at SCHS. She nurses our sick (hands out aspirin), tolerates faculty ineffici- ency , takes messages and sends them along on her 3X5 notecards, and greets each visitor to her domain with a smile. But her secretarial skills are not the only qualities that we admire about Miss Jean. We dedicate the 1974 Indian to Miss Jean because she blankets us in the aura of warmth that surrounds her. We dedicate the 1974 Indian to her because she is genuinely interested in each student and his education. We dedicate the 1974 Indian to Miss Jean simply because we like her.

We started out this year by trying to decide just what a yearbook is. The trend these days is toward visual interpretation, with tons of pictures and very few words. Go for the fast eye impact, and leave the messages to the readers. But a yearbook is above all a distillation, a preservation of a segment of time. 1973-74 is a time that cannot be completely grasped by visual images, without some attempt to convey the attitudes, opinions, and frustra- tions of the day. Fifty years ago, yearbooks featured page after page of essays and commentary. They gradually evolved into picturebooks, set aside on dusty shelves to be revived every ten years or so to recall the quaint style and appearance of nearly-forgotten acquaintances. It is our hope that this book will be worth the preserva- tion. The emphasis in our book is on the school and the people who are the school. Here are our successes and occasional failures. 1973-74 was the time for hair and sideburns and much hand-wringing by concerned parents. 1973-74 was the time of Watergate. 1973-74 was the second time a Vice-President has resigned from office. 1973-74 was the time of high food prices. 1973-74 was the time of an unstable economy. 1973-74 was the time of a fuel shortage. With any luck at all, the 1973-74 yearbook has managed to capture some of what was really going on at the time. It has a lot more words in it than it probably should have, but 1974’s kids were a talkative bunch. Hope- fully, the book is worth keeping around. Cathy Newberry Louise Baker
