“
This is the 1974 INDIAN. Mrs. lean Moseley is the secretary at SCHS. She nurses our sick (hands out aspirin), tolerates faculty ineffici- ency , takes messages and sends them along on her 3X5 notecards, and greets each visitor to her domain with a smile. But her secretarial skills are not the only qualities that we admire about Miss Jean. We dedicate the 1974 Indian to Miss Jean because she blankets us in the aura of warmth that surrounds her. We dedicate the 1974 Indian to her because she is genuinely interested in each student and his education. We dedicate the 1974 Indian to Miss Jean simply because we like her. We started out this year by trying to decide just what a yearbook is. The trend these days is toward visual interpretation, with tons of pictures and very few words. Go for the fast eye impact, and leave the messages to the readers. But a yearbook is above all a distillation, a preservation of a segment of time. 1973-74 is a time that cannot be completely grasped by visual images, without some attempt to convey the attitudes, opinions, and frustra- tions of the day. Fifty years ago, yearbooks featured page after page of essays and commentary. They gradually evolved into picturebooks, set aside on dusty shelves to be revived every ten years or so to recall the quaint style and appearance of nearly-forgotten acquaintances. It is our hope that this book will be worth the preserva- tion. The emphasis in our book is on the school and the people who are the school. Here are our successes and occasional failures. 1973-74 was the time for hair and sideburns and much hand-wringing by concerned parents. 1973-74 was the time of Watergate. 1973-74 was the second time a Vice-President has resigned from office. 1973-74 was the time of high food prices. 1973-74 was the time of an unstable economy. 1973-74 was the time of a fuel shortage. With any luck at all, the 1973-74 yearbook has managed to capture some of what was really going on at the time. It has a lot more words in it than it probably should have, but 1974’s kids were a talkative bunch. Hope- fully, the book is worth keeping around. Cathy Newberry Louise Baker 5 Do not try to understand me, for in doing so you restrict my being and insult my individuality. I have no limit; there is no end, no boundary can be set on my soul. So do not define my personality. Let me remain a spirit drifting free. and this is loneliness the kind i have known if you've had times like this, my friend, you're not alone. standin' by a highway waitin' for a ride a bitter wind is bio win' it keeps you cold inside a line of cars is passin' no one seems to care you look down at your body to be sure you are there. siltin' in a hotel starin' at the walls cracks across the ceiling silence in the halls you open up the window and turn the tv on then you go down to the lobby but everybody’s gone. so you leave the empty cities and go down to the shore you're achin' to discover what you’re lookin' for the beaches are deserted in the morning time a solitary figure you walk the water line. you come upon a tidepool you stand there peerin’ in and when you touch the water the circles do begin you look to where a seabird lies crumpled on the sand then you take a single pebble and hold it in your hand. you come back up the beaches at the end of day and see how all your footprints have been washed away nothin' is forever we are bom to die so may i say i love you before i say good-bye. and this is loneliness, the kind 1 have known if you've had times like this, my friend, you're not alone. 8 ADMINISTRATION N. P. Malcolm Superintendent of Schools Malcom Freeman STANDING, L-R: Morris Johnson, Jack Burke. SEATED: N. P. Malcom, Superintendent: Herbert Bridges, Chairman; Willis Ausley. ABSENT: Bill Dozier. 10 Assistam Principal, Douglas Spivey; Secretary, Jean Moseley; Principal, Louis Bonner. Curriculum Co-ordinator, Panola Brady; Visit- ing Teacher, Helen O’Neal Much has been said throughout history about the merit (or lack of merit) of administrations in general. Some people promote total control by an administration; others promote anarchy. By including these pictures in the Indian we are asserting our belief that an administration that encourages individualism is the answer. Moderation is the keynote. By including these pictures of our administration here in Seminole County we are saying thank you for tempering our idealism with practicality. n LUNCHROOM MANAGER Mrs. Eugene Reynolds CUSTODIANS Crawford Grooms and Herman Coachman LUNCHROOM STAFF STANDING, L-R: Mrs. Buddy Reynolds, Mrs. Clifton Godwin, Mrs. Henry Temples, Mrs. Collie Leonard, Mrs. Ed Bush. We had to take a time out frequently because everybody was convulsed with laughter over the antics of Dic- con (Chip), the real life squabble between Gammer Gurton (Cathy) and Dame Chat (Brenda), the predicament of Hodge (Brad), or the misfortunes of Tyb (Kathy) and Cocke (Mike). William, Jeff, Benny, and Donnie not only constructed very attractive props, but also managed to be excused from class in the proc- ess !
