Gordon Phrllrps Wrth deepest regret we record the passrng on August 2 of Mr F Gordon Phrllrps For a vast number of Old Boys rt rs rmpossrble to thrnk of therr school days wrthout rememberrng the promrnent place whrch Mr Phrllrps held rn them Almost hrs entrre teachrng career was spent at Selwyn House He rorned the staff under Mr Wanstall rn 1933 and remarned untrl hrs retrrement rn 1972 Many wrll look back wrth gratrtude to hrs profrcrent efforts to teach them Latrn and Englrsh classes frequently enlrvened wrth phrlosophrcal drgressrons but he wrll be remembered far more for hrs other actrvrtres ln the days before rncreasrng numbers warranted specralrsts rn physrcal educatron he organrsed wrth remarkable effrcrency the entrre athletrc programme wrth rts rngenrous alternatrve of classes rn voluntary art whrch lrmrted facrlrtres and rnclement weather led hrm to supervrse per sonally Hockey soccer and basketball all came wrthrn hrs purvrew but hrs own preferred game was crrcket At that he hrmself excelled and he was steeped rn the tradrtrons and the lore of the sport lr was ror hrm a personal tragedy w hen condr IIOHS compelled the school to abandon rt Wrth the move to Westmount rn 1961 he found rt necessary to concentrate hrs energres upon the exacrrng dutres of clrrector of studres Even after hrs retrrement he remarned a famrlrar personalrty at the School At the School s maror functrons he was rnvarrably the centre of a crrcle of Old Boys relrvrng old trmes and reportrng therr subsequent progress lt was a well merrted clrmax to hrs career that on Founder s Day rn 1984 he was the recrprent of the Sperrs Medal for outstandrng servrce to the School Half a century has seen momentous changes rn Selwyn House School and the lrnlts wrth the earlv days 'JQCOFUB sreadrlx fewer Throughout those changes Mr Phrllrps was there a mark of former tradrtron and the vrsron of the future , .V X. ,V

Headmaster s Message Three years at Selwyn House have gone by QUICK ly I am very grateful for the support and en couragement that the School has receIved IH that tIme from the Board of DIrectors the Old Boys the Parents and the School communIty at large The ImplementatIon of the Macaulay buIldIng plan WhlCh not only Increased the overall floor space by 5000 but added well equIpped sublect centres athletIc faClllflES and OfflCeS has work ed out better than anyone had antIcIpated The School IS now commltted to ITTTDFOVIDS pro grams and facIlItIes In other areas Next year wIll see the addItIon of a second computer labora tory The purchase of over twenty ZenIth 286 our exIstIng Apple laboratory Over the next two or three years the Apple lab Itself wIll be upgrad ed and expanded The result wIll be a doublIng of our computer capacIty and put Selwyn House among the best equIpped schools In fhIS Impor tant area of school currIculum As well the Records and Development OffICS wIll contInue ITS excellent work In ImprovIng the overall efflclency of our operatlon and the ser VICE we SIVC to our many constItuencIes Also noteworthy IS the appoIntment of Mr Geof frey Dowd as DIrector of StudIes In the Secondary School ln thIs Important new POSIIIOD Mr Dowd Wlll be responsIbIe for antIcIpatIng the staffmg and currIculum development needs of the School and for helpIng to SIVC VISION to the academlc af faIrs of the School These developments are all Important In that they demonstrate the School s commItment to Im provement and to excellence lt IS very encourag Ing for the School s very able staff to know that there lS such broad general support for the pro grammes they are runnIng for the benefIt of the students However It IS what we do daIly for the students WhlCh perhaps measures best our worth as a school In a conversatIon l had Wlfh a SCDIOF stu dent near the end of the year I was struck by how were talkmg about hIs tIme at Selwyn House and I asked what he thought were the most Important factors In makIng a Selwyn House educatlon worthwhIle He mentIoned a few thIngs but hIs two strongest pomts had to do wIth the teachers FIrst he Sald they were avaIlabIe to an IncredI ble degree for extra help second he Sald that they were demandIng In theIr CXDECYEYIOD of the students lt was maInly for these two thIngs he Sald he would be most grateful to the School It IS remarks such as these that SIVE us all prlde In what we do and encouragement to contInue set tIng hIgh standards of professIonal conduct As well such remarks SIVE me encouragement for what have been very enjoyable and challengmg years at Selwyn House School 9 computers will be an excellent complement to he felt about the teachers at Selwyn House.
