We wish to commend him for his Work here and Wish him the best of luck in the future. To recount all the innumerable fine memories entwined around my years at the Selma Union High School Would be an utter impossibility. The Wonderful association with students and faculty will always remain as an inspiration. However it is not the past with its many fine accomplishments but the future of the Selma Union High School that should interest us all. To see our school located on a brand new site with plenty of room for expansion in physical facilities along with an enriched educational program of the finest, geared to a maximum service to our community and state, should be the major concern of all at the present time. Though I'm leaving the staff I will still stand by ever ready to do all I can for the better interest of our school. Some lines from the George Banks poem, 'What I Live For' should be an excellent future guide: For the cause that needs assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future, in the distance and the good that I can do G. A. MARSH, Vice Principal ERMA STEVENS, Dean of Girls Mr. Marsh returned as Vice Principal of the Selma Union High School this year. Mr. Marsh has had a very successful year. He has maintained strict dis- cipline, yet won the admiration of all the students and the faculty. Miss Stevens, Dean of Girls, began teaching at Selma High School. She has had a busy year with her duties as Dean of Girls, Senior Problems class in- structor, and sponsor and founder of the Teen Toppers, a newly organized club tor girls of 5'8 and over. Mr. O. W. Ebright, Mr. R. Mallon, and Mr. W. Hansen, all started teaching during the second semester of this year. Mr. O. W. Ebright teaches General Science, U. S. History, and Social Living. Mr. Robert Mallon teaches bookkeeping, typing, and Senior Problems. Mr. William Hansen teaches the boys' agriculture class. MORRIS KENNEDY Morris Kennedy was a Selma Union High School bus driver for many years. He was a favorite with the faculty and school staff as well as with all the students, who will always remember him as the Wonderful friend he always was. Many thanks go to the bus-drivers for their job Well done. They have a great responsibility' of bringing the students back and forth each day. Looking behind the scenes, we see the custodians busily working early and late hours. They are always work- ing hard without the credit and recog- nition they deserve. When help is need- ed, they are always willing to assist both students and faculty. We are for- tunate to have such custodians. Row I: W. Falutz, S. Hughes, A. Goldbeck, G. Irwin. Row II: R. This is the common phrase of all juniors, and it holds true for the class of 55. The class of 55 has accomplished a great many things this year. They have been prominent in many activities. Next year's seniors have made quite a mark for themselves. Finances for the Ir-Sr. Banquet were provided by the concessions which they operated during the football and basket- ball seasons. Dos Palos ......, SANGER The Selma Bears fought hard against the Sanger Apaches but were handed a 20-6 defeat. '1'ne urst quarter was fairly evenly matched. After a week's practice and excellent- coaching from Coach Chupich, Selma pulled their first quick kick in the first quarter. It worked and set Sanger back quite far. The second quarter hadn't got- ten very far underway when Gene Barnes issued the first score of the game for Sanger. He went over from about the Selma eleven yard line. An intercepted pass by Fred Scharnick was all Sanger needed for another touchdown, as he ran 35 yards after intercepting the pass intended for Mickey Self. As the gun went off for the half, Selma was about 2 yards from the Sanger goal line. Sanger scored again in the third quarter when Ashmore went over from the Selma five-yard line. Selma made their only score in the fourth quarter when Harold Marquez passed into the end zone to Glen Bixler but Selma had the crowd standing twice when they came too close for Sanger's com- fort but were held. REEDLEY The Reedley High School Pi- rates handed the Selma Bears another league loss by a score of 19-14. The Pirates took advantage of a Selma fumble on Selma's 25- yard line and scored after a ser- ies of plays with Pete Rogalsky going over from about the two- yard line. The first quarter ended 7-0. Early in the second quarter Ray Olvera of Reedley went into the end zone from the Selma five. Selma finally got their defense set up and held the Pirates to the half. Selma had many pass- ing attacks and tried hard to score, but the Pirates wouldn't let Selma inside their 16. The half ended 13-0. Selma's efforts paid off late in the third quarter when, after re- ceiving a short pass from Joe Dominguez, Bob Gonzales ran about 40 yards for a touchdown. Bob had to dodge many Pirates even though he did have some interference. The third quarter ended 13-7, Reedley in front. In the fourth quarter Selma was driving for another touch- down when they fumbled on Reedley's 15-yard line. Reedley took over the ball and ran it up Selma 36 ,,,,.... ......,,. The Bears seemed to be as new as their uniforms as they gained 155 yards by scrimmage and 171 yards by connecting 8 out of 15 passes. The first quarter ended 8-0, with Selma in front. The play of the game was Har- old Marquez' 455-yard pass to Glenn Bixler, which came in the second quarter. Although thc driving Bears scored 27 points against Lemoore in the first half, Lemoore held them to one touchdown and a total of nine points in the second half. DOS PALOS The Selma High Bears ended their 1953 football season with a fourth place in the league and a win over the Dos Palos Broncos with the score 28-12. On the first kick off Jesse Spain ran 85 yards for a touchdown. This serit Dos Palos ahead 6-0 right away. Dos Palos didn't stay ahead very long, as Selma scored on a 59 yard run by Bob Gonzales. Bob ran through the line and got away from the Dos Palos tacklers. Later he picked up Bill Hughey for interference but didn't really need him, as no Dos Palos players were near him. Dos Palos scored again with Spain going over from the Selma six early in the second quarter. When Dos Palos kicked off, Bob Dangaran got the ball on the Sel- ma ten, reversed to Harold Mar- quez, who got away from a Dos Palos man, picked up some inter- ference and ran all the way for a Selma touchdown. Glenn Bixler threw a key block on this ninety yard return run. The half ended Selma 14 Dos Palos 12. The next score of the game came when Harold Marquez passed to Bill Hughey, who got away from some Broncos and ran the rest of the way. This pass was good for a 43 yard touch- down. Selma scored again early in the fourth quarter when Mar- quez plunged over from the Bro- nca four. WASHINGTON The small but mighty Bears again upset the officials' fore- tellings by handing Washington a 20-6 defeat. During the scoreless first quar- ter neither team seemed to have the ability to score, but in the latter part of the first half the Bears began to move with a touchdown pass from Marquez to Bixler after several other pass- ing gains. An incident that very seldom happens occurred in this excit- ing game. On Washington's third down they attempted a pass and the gun went off. This should have ended the half, but there was a penalty on Selma. Wash- ington took the penalty and got another play. They passed again and almost made a touchdown, and they would have if one of the defensive stars of the game, Bob Little, hadn't overtaken the pass receiver and stopped him. Again there was a penalty on Selma and Washington, with their hopes up for a touchdown, took the penalty. Again they tried a pass, but Joe Dominguez intercepted the throw and with several members of the squad blocking for him scored a touch- down for Selma. The half ended 13-0, Selma leading. In the third quarter Washing- ton made their first and only touchdown when Walsh plunged into Selma's end zone after sev- eral running gains from their own 34-yard line. FOWLER Three touchdown passes from Joe Dominguez to Glen Bixler and a 55-yard punt return by Selma's Bob Dangaran proved to be too much for Fowler as the small but mighty Bears came from behind to disappoint the Fowler Red Cats eleven 25-20. Fowler's hopes for a win jumped about the half of the first quarter, when after they in- tercepted a pass and drove 52 yards to Selma's 6-yard line, Nat Brown went over for the first touchdown of the game. The Selma Bears did not get dis- couraged, though, as they came back in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Joe Dominguez to Bob Dangaran. The half ended 6-6. The next touchdown came in the third quarter when Harold Robinson went over from Sel- ma's 9-yard line. Robinson again went over the end zone early in the first of the last quarter. Fowler seemed to have the game cinched at 20-65 but the Bears finally got rolling with a 25-yard pass from Joe Dominguez to Bill Hughey, a short run and a touchdown pass of 30 yards from Joe to Glenn Bixler making the - score 20-12. Selma scored again with Bob Dangaran's spectacular 65-yard touchdown punt return. Selma converted and made the score 4 I- A- i' -4 1 4 L 20-19. After that Fowler took. over the ball and was forced to punt. Selma then took the ball and went on a passing attack. First Joe connected with Hughey again and then he connected with Mickey Self, and while the crowd went wild, Glenn Bixler caught Joe's pass inside the end 1' zone. This proved to be the winning touchdown. KINGSBURG l i The Kingsburg Vikings steam- rollered Selma's crippled A-squad to a score of 53-13. Rafer John- son and Guy Troisi were toot much for the Selma eleven from the start. Johnson made five of the touchdowns and all of the converts, while Troisi went over for the other three Kingsburg 1 touchdowns. Johnson couldn'ti seem to be stopped after getting I to his full speed. Johnson has many abilities as his kick-offs ' and conversions were of an ex- cellent standing. One of hisf kick-offs went into the end zone. 4 Once he made a conversion from about the 20-yard line. MEMORIAL The crippled Selma dropped their first league game to the Memorial Panthers by a score of 19-0. The Panthers made three touchdowns in the first, three-fourths of the first half, but the Bears fighting squad held' them scoreless from then on. The Bears threatened to plow. the end zone twice tn the second, quarter and once in the fourth quarter. The Panthers got close, to scoring in the fourth quarter' but were checked by the Bears' defence.
