The new gym was dedicaTed by a program of speeches and enTerTainmenT provided by The school band and The German Band. CALENDAR Friday, Jan. 22, I937. The iunior play was indeed a very amusing and entertaining play. Academy awards should go to Howard Davis. Barbara Cadden, Gwendolyn Thomp- son, Bob Binkley, Robert Gould, Henry Nielson, and Josephine Day for excellent portrayal of their parts. Friday, Jan. 22, l937, Monday, Feb. I, I937. School closed because of an influenza epidemic. Of course everyone was deeply grieved! Thursday, Feb. 4, I937. James W. Williams. the comedian chemist, amazed us with many experiments using liquid air. He performed seemingly magical wonders and en- tertained us with his witticisms. Wednesday, Feb. I7, l937. The Santa Barbara State band gave an enioyable program of comedy, song, and band music. The Legion Auxiliary presented the school with an American Flag. Friday, Feb. 26, I937. The Girls' Jinx Carnival was held in the auditor- ium. Entertainment consisted of two skits, a fashion show. a Hill Billy orchestra and a tap dance. Friday, March l2, I937. Orendo, the magician, paid us a visit which we all enioyed. Although he did perform a few new tricks, most of them were aged. Some of us wish that magicians would learn more new tricks instead of all using the same old ones. Wednesday. March I7, I937. The Clarion donned a festive color in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Sunday, March 2l, Wednesday, March 24, I937. Eleven music students attended the Music Teach- ers and Students Conference held in San Francisco. Thursday. March 25, l937. School dismissed at noon for a day and a half of Easter vacation. Tuesday, March 30, I937. The Fighting Bears gave a program of motion pictures which were taken by members of that club. Some people were pleased and some were displeased to see themselves walking on the screen. Friday, April 2, l937. The halls of the Science building and the gym were transformed into gay festivity for our Spring Carnival. Many organizations entered booths and concessions, and profits were made by every one of them. Thursday. April l5, I937. A very interesting motion picture was presented in assembly on bread. It showed a reporter in Chi- cago getting a feature story on bread. It took us to several countries and through several centuries and showed the part that bread has played and is playing in world history. Saturday, April I7, I937. Journalism Day was attended at Fresno State College by many delegates from our publications. The Clarion and Magnet received high honors in the iudging of school iournalistic efforts. Wednesday, April 2I, I937. The finals of the Extemporaneous Reading Con- test were held in an assembly. Barbara Cadden was the representative from Selma: although she made every Selma High student proud of her, she did not' receive the highest honor. Friday, April 23, I937. The annual Band Concert was given to a capacity audience. Beside many entertaining pieces, there were added attractions to give variety. Thursday, April 29, l937. The Public Schools Week Exhibit was held in the Science building. Art. sewing and cooking dis- plays were particularly interesting. The community as well as the students enioyed visiting the school to view the progress of the students of Selma Union High School. Thursday. May 6, l937. The seniors went to Piedra for an early mornin breakfast. Everyone had a good time and slept ai day to make up for lost sleep. Saturday, May 22, I937. The Junior-Senior Banquet was given at the Hotel Californian and was enioyed by everyone. Catherine Hoegh, Darline Crossley, Elaine Heck- man, Avelene Borunda, Roy Perez. and Eugene Kauff- man entertained with Mexican songs and dances, the theme being Mexican. Friday, May 28, l937. The senior play Perfect Harmony was enioyed by an enthusiastic audience. Special compliments should go to Genevieve Brooding and Melvin Manley. Sunday. June 6, I937.
