All of these I commend to your possession. 8 County Superintendent MR. E. S. SIMPSON A welcome addition to the school ' s facilities was the canopy which was built with the aid of PTA funds. Eight of the ten games were decided by one touchdown or less, and two one -point losses, a three -point loss to arch -rival Smithfield, and a scoreless tie caused the Jackets to finish with a mediocre 4-5-1 record. Highlights of the season were the scorelesstie in which Selma staged seven successful goal line stands against a larger and more experienced Gamer team, andthe Home- coming win over Fuquay 44-13. Two points for Selma as Peggy fires. 80 The Selma girls ' basketball team of 1963 was again on top of the corfference standings for the fifth consecutive year. With big changes in the rules, all girls ' teams had to make a transition in their play. After many hours of hard practice and a few awkward games, the girls showed their versatility by beginning to play the type game they were capable of. This year the team had both height and experience to their advantage. Though they suffered a usual slump in their play toward the end of the season, they still managed to make a good name for themselves. At the time of this writing, the girls are looking forward to the conference tournament with hope, determination, and confidence. Top-heavy with rela- tively inexperienced performers, the Jackets nevertheless held their own against the better teams in the conference . Only several close and heartbreaking defeats kept the team from finishing among the league leaders. Highlight of the season was a win over Smithfield on the Devils ' home court. This was the first such win in a dozen years. The Jackets also won over always tough Fuquay and Gamer on the road, two firsts for the team since the formation of the conference. Third row: Keith Lancaster, Jimmy Bunce, Jerry Dean, Jerry Hayes, Johnny Wayne Batten, Charles Little, Bobby Fuller, Donald Hines, Coach Bob Hickman. Hines is headed for a rough landing ! A great deal more enthusiasm was shown for track this year. Selma fielded a larger track team than it has in recent years. Possibilities for brighter seasons and more victories were shown by the performances of several of the younger members. Keith puts the discus in orbit. Whoever heard of a headless polevaulter? 84 Baseball 0 The 1962 edition of the Yellow Jacket baseball team was, for the most part, a young one. With the exception of two players,, the Jackets have everyone returning. A nucleus of a quick, competent infield, and an outfield of long ball hitters, coupled with the fine pitching of Jimmy Bunce, made the Jackets a power to be reckoned with in the Capital Area Conference. Ji I In June of 1963, Jimmy Bunce, star pitcher and outfielder for the Y e 1 1 o w Jackets was signed as a professional baseball player by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Selma can point with pride to another local who has made the grade. First row: Eugene Wilkerson, Wayne Ricks, Leon Price, Joe Price, Johnny Wayne Batten. Third row: Woodruff, Jimmy Bunce, Donald Hines. Second row: Donald Brown, Manager; Johnny Gooch, Johnny Stancil, Billy Whitley, Tommy Crumpler, Jerry Hayes, Jimmy Raymond Gurley, Coach Virgil Payne. 85 V 1 Js JOJETTf WAYNE LATTE v WAYNE PJCKS RAYMOND GURLEY LEO !
