After twelve long and toilsome years of climbing the ladder of education, we, the Seniors of '58, find this quotation applied to us. I wonder if any of us will ever forget the first rung of the ladder. As we entered the first grade in September of '46, there was a look of fear mingled with an expression of expectation on the face of each of us. This was an entirely new environment for us, and it took some of us quite a while to adapt ourselves to conditions. Personally, I remember I was one of the slower ones to get into the swing of things, f followed the teacher around for two months. 1947 and the second grade boosted us a step higher onto the ladder. We really made our debut into dignity that year by organizing the Toy Orchestra . We were tops in those white and gold uniforms, even if Ruth Peedin and Georgia Price did spoil the appearance of our band with their mocking-bird legs. So we climbed! Third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh (Miss Whitaker for some) and eighth. This last rung on the elementary ladder was spent adjusting ourselves to a new principal. Mr. Rex Mitchell, and preparing for the magical wonderland that lay just ahead of us--high school. Magical wonderland? The ninth grade wasn't exactly my idea of a magical wonderland. We lacked everything--confidence, a feeling of belonging, everything--except greenness. There was an ample supply of that. We may have lacked confidence, but we didn't lack good leaders. Mrs. Avery and Mr. Payne joined talents to produce one of the wealthiest Freshmen Classes in a long line of Freshmen Classes. Marshals for the year were Ailine Sullivan and Brenda Broad- well. Think of Sophomores and you usually think of a silly bunch of mixed-up kids. Not so with us! We were very calm, considering--our class consists of Charles Sullivan and Vick Avera. Thanks to Mr. Payne and Mr. Stephenson, our sponsors, we survived the year. A few of us might have suffered from malnutrition as a result of losing our apples to Mr. Stephenson, but other- wise we managed fine. Sixteen lucky members of the class were chosen as waiters and waitresses for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Marshals for this eventful year were Ailine Sullivan, Joyce Norris, and Gail Evans. Our Junior Class was, in the opinion of most, styled to perfection. Prosperity was ours from the beginning with two wonderful sponsors, Mrs. West and Mr. Henderson. We dined and danced to the theme Jamaica Farewell at our Junior-Senior Banquet, created by our own artistic minds. The Junior Class was again in the limelight as it presented its outstanding production, A Connecticut Yankee in the King Arthur's Court , long to be remembered for its well-managed practices. Then there's always the U.S. History class and its tour to Williams- burg. There were only about twenty who made this famous voyage, but only twenty can cause a million headaches. Right, Mr. Holt? Wonder if he ever found out who b e 1 o ng e d to that head that kept poking itself from behind the bottom of the door. Junior Marshals were Ailine Sullivan, Chief; Joyce Norris, Brenda Broadwell, and Carol Vann. We are now Seniors. Everything that accompanies a Senior is ours, our most treasured asset being dignity. We are all trying to co-operate with Herman Millard, class president, and his staff, Barbara Wilson, Brenda Broadwell, and Evelyn Smith, in creating a Senior Class that will go down in history. The past has been bright; the future looks brighter, with the Junior- Senior, the Senior Play, and the Washington trip yet to come. The brightness we owe to our two wonderful sponsors, Miss Rich and Mr. West, and to our new principal Mr. W. W. Woodard. Thank you for your undying effort. We, the Seniors of'58 must soon leave the stage. Our role has been small, but we hope important. May we be thus remembered anyway. To the lower classmen we say, We hope it is as nice for you as it has been for us. But remember, All good things must come to an end. The end is near for us. We are sad but happy. Impossible? No. We are sad we must depart, but we are happy, and very, very proud, to have taken part in the symphony that is Selma High School. 54 Ailine Sullivan Historian A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR S COURT 55 JAMAICA FAREWELL 1957 JR-SR. Payne, Assistant Principal School Committee James C. Woodard, Chr. Mrs. Gordon Brown Julian V. Dean Henry J. Cross Floyd C. Price, Jr. To the Members of the Graduating Class: We sincerely hope that we have helped you to make the adjustment from young adults to adults. Students who have come to the end of their high school years without making preparation to use their training only load their minds. A lamp can never light another lamp unless it continues to burn its own flame. Education must be designed and used to develop mental and moral power in people so that they possess greater maturity of mind to enable them to under- stand more clearly the highly technical world in which we live. Ultimately, educational initiative will rest with you. The school, however good, is only part of what we want. The citizens of this community are making their community a better place in which to live and you have a definite place in its future. We are proud of the progress that you have made. You have been an integral part of our school which is based upon a firm belief in the integrity and worth of the individ- ual. Enlightened people may safely exercise liberty and wisely pursue happiness in this country. Ca) • (aJ (yxrz£ou W. Yes, it is the same class, but my, how we have changed! See the skinny legs of Ruth and Georgia? That cute little Charles playing the triangle? That big Betty on the xylophone? Howard was good-looking, Joyce, little, and Sue, grinning then, too. Can you imagine June with braids ? Most of us have lost our musical talents by now. A few haven't. Our interests and knowledge have broadened. We are now ready for Commencement -- the beginning. 97 86 THE KEY TO BETTER BUYING... 99 «Ii l!
