How did you get here? Cyrus-That's a long story. We swiped Virginia Foxworth's jewels. You know she's the Countess DeTour now. Thomas-That's why she had the jewels. Deles Ito Katherine-very he-mannishlyj-Pull up a chair. CBoth Katherine and Deles sit downl. Katherine-Do lets talk over old times. I saw some people today that I haven't seen in ages. Deles-Did you see Frank Ormond as you came in? Katherine-No. Is he in here? Fhomas-Yeah, Frances Towns sued him for breach of promise, and he couldn't pay so they arrested him. Katherine-Frances Towns! What grounds did she have? Cyrus-She's the golf professional at the Country Club, and she says he fell for her golf playing. Thomas-I know. She hit him on the head with a golf ball. Katherine-Why, I saw Frances today. Evidently she still has hopes. She was at Sara Price's cooking school. Juanita Bolinger, Ruby Car- ter, Roebenthia Hooks, Evelyn Nelson, Kathryn Welch, Janette Woods, Louise Miller, Mildred Cunningham, were there ia wistful note creep- ing into her voicel all preparing to become competent housewives. Cyrus treading from one of the papersj-Look here at what we are miss- ing. A musical comedy is coming to Selma, and what's more, Patti Gee Martin and Henry Phillips are the stars. Thomas, Katherine and Deles fin unisonj-No! Cyrus-Yeah. And let me read you the cast: Edythe Anderson, Lillie Howard Berry, Kathryn Northrop, Sara Carter, Emma Lee Hafner, Eddie Frances Kincey, Sallie May, Louise Watters, Maurine Sharpe and Margaret Jones. Thomas lwho has picked up a magazinel-Here's a story by Rosa Rey- nolds. She's being sued for writing a libelous story about Clarice Reedy who is in the Zeigfeld Follies now. Deles-Uh-huh. Eleanor Rennie and Bill Hicks just got in, too. Katherine-I didn't know that Lucille and Virginia Fendley are playing at the Academy in a popular sister act. Malcolm McMath is the piano player. Cyrus-Muriel, Earl and Brandon Green are also doing a sister act. Since Muriel has married Brandon, her name is Muriel Green Green. fLoud laughter from Cyrusl. CEnter Russell Rawls, a messenger boy with a telegram. He gives it to Deles and proceeds to read over his shoulder. He bursts into laughter. Exit Russelll. Katherine, Cyrus and Thomas fin unisonj-What is it? Deles Creadsj-Reserve padded cells for Flora Patillo and fifty other high- waymen. Katherine-Didn't you know? Flora held up a freight train. fLoud mmm liliii imfm 1 ll I luv

Thomas Mackin foccupant of a cell, to Cyrus Lanham, his roommate, who is writingl-That's a sick looking pen you are writing with. Cyrus-1That's funny. It just came out of the ink well.7 fLoud laugh- ter from Cyrus.j Thomas-Calm yourself, Cyrus. I've just heard news from your girl. Cyrus findignantlyl-What girl? Thomas fsarcasticallyb-Excuse me, but I do know some news. Marie Gusdorf and Irma Fowlkes had a iight over Burt Davis. You know they both work in his restaurant. Cyrus-No. Thomas-Yeah. They'll be working free for months, trying to pay for the dishes they broke. Not to speak of the hospital bill. Cyrus-I suppose Dr. Frank Thomas will be lenient with them about that, since they're such good friends. Thomas-I don't know. You never can tell about doctors and lawyers. Joe Green sho' did do us dirty. If he hadn't been the prosecuting at- torney, we never would have got convicted. Cyrus-Elise Cothran did her best for us, though. She can't help being a bum lawyer. fEnter Deles Seay, Warden, escorting Katherine Jackson. bearing magazines, papers and fruitsl. Thomas and Cyrus-Hi. Katherine fgushinglyj-Hello. Deles-This kind young woman is from the Ladies' Aid Society. She has come to bring a bit of good cheer to the prisoners.

Lulu Jordan, Ellen Brown and Mildred Lloyd were in the gang. Cyrus fhaving found another article of interest in the paperj-Here's some bad news. Katherine Csympatheticallyb-Is some one dead? Cyrus-much worse than that. Dorothy Day, Mary Jordan and Ellen Pollard are in the asylum still trying to translate In Memoriam. Thomas-Yes, that is bad, but it's nothing more than I expected. Katherine-Had you heard about Anna Powell Burns selling her latest Portrait for a fabulous amount? Cyrus-No. Who bought it? Katherine-William Welch. There's a rumor of his engagement to Anna. Deles-I knew there was a catch in it. Katherine-Now I wouldn't say that, Deles. Anna Powell has helped Ada Morgan and me a great deal with the Ladies' Aid, and I'm sure-- Thomas-Yes, Yes, I'm quite sure she has, by the way whatever became of Ed Hasty? Katherine Ccoloring daintilyj-You know, Edward and I have been engag- ed for fifteen years. fShe is duly congratulated, and changing the subject rapidlyl-Guess what- Elizabeth Martin is in the circus. Deles-The world's smallest woman. Katherine-That doesn't keep her from eating more than the elephants, though. She went to McGan Drug Company with Beth Bayne and me, when the circus was in town, and she ate three of the biggest ice cream sodas I ever saw, made by Clarence McGan himself. Beth ordered a hot chocolate, and Joe Smoke brought her a cocoa quinine. If she weren't such an earnest worker in the Ladies' Aid I fear she would have used harsh language. Gertrude Lockett is the cashier there, and she even had the nerve to laugh. Poor Beth was indignant. fThe noise of automobile horns is heard from without. Thomas and Cyrus run to the windowj. Cyrus-There's some sort of a parade going on out there. Albert Elebash is at the head with Eugene Kennedy and Scott Welch. Katherine-Oh, I know. Albert is at the head of a used car concern, and they are his partners. Deles-I guess that's how he gets rid of some of his old Fords. QThomas and Deles resume their seatsl. Cyrus fpicking up a magazinej-Look, here's a College Humor, edited by Harwell Howard, himself. It even has a special section of themes to be copied by the Senior English class. CA tinkling noise is heardj. Thomas--Lady, you dropped something. Katherine-It's nothing but a hairpin. lDeles stoops to retrieve itj. Cyrus-That reminds me, Frances Riley has started a hairpin factory. I must say she's a wonderful advertisement for her own business. Deles Csniifing the air!-I smell smoke. Katherine-Yes, I believe I do- ,f' W. .-..., N 1 N I-.'l'l. li N llllfilql 'I' ll I Rl' Y ls 2 ,gl ll' ll
