STARTING FROM SCRATCH Typical of today's modern school buildings. Selmaas new elementary building, located east of Selma, has twelve large rooms. Special emphasis has been put on the students' needs with colored blackboards and color glazed windows to protect their eyes from the rays of the sun and strain. Orange painted doors and window frames decorate the exterior of the red brick structure. To carry out the interior decorations are matching desks, which can be moved easily from room to room. The fifth grades have had the responsibility of maintaining a book store and an ice cream store. In the book store the students could buy paper, pencils, crayons, and other necessities. Profits from the book store and the ice cream store have been used to buy some of the smaller needs of the school. - H 1 v Four hundred and thirty-eight elemen- tary students passed through ten such doors as those illustrated on the right in the 1955-56 school year. There are 109 windows of all shapes and sizes: oblong, square, and rec- tangular. We will admit that these facts are very specific, but we have gone one step further. There are 965 window panes, including 27 window panes found in the doors. You don't believe us? It just takes 15 minutes, a little foot power, a good pair of boots if it,s muddy, and an adding machine to prove it! , 1 '- ': ' s l fi , ff. k -,fV:Y1fwg..z -tm- qgs I N .,,, MW 4,,,,,..., .,., - ep 235555 . 5171..- ,st 'Q' i it 2 MORE ROOM TO BREATHE Built in 19044, the high school building has seen many changes, most of which took place when the elementary students' were transferred to their own building early last fall. Sixth grade students are remaining in the high school building. Unlike previous years, the seventh and eighth grades have a home room in which teachers come to them, with the exception of home economics and industrial arts classes in which the students themselves pass to class. A typing room. a visual aid room, and a sound-proof music room are the main changes that have taken place this year. The visual aid room serves as a miscellaneous room, where motion pictures are shown and committee meetings are held. The faculty is enjoying a much needed lunch room this year. The students eat in the study hall and in classrooms. In 1953-1954 the home economics and industrial arts departments were ex- panded. A house on the property adjoining the school was remodeled to form the home economics department, with five kitchen units. A room in the rear of ,lim Goins' Texaco Service Station serves as the industrial arts department.
