The keel was laid on 3 August i959 and the ship was launched on 9 September l96Q. Mrs. l-lugh D. Scott, wite ot Senator Scott ot Rennsylvania, was the Sponsor ot the SELLERS. l-ler husband was the principal speaker at the launching ceremony. The DDG-ll is the tirst ship to bear the name SELLERS. The ship's namesake is Admiral David Foote SELLERS, a tormer Commander-in-Chiet, U, S. Eleet, and Superintendent, U, S, Navy Acad- em . Dluring World War I Admiral Sellers was awarded the Navy Cross for exceptionally meritorious service as Commanding Officer ot the USS Agamemnon . During the uprisings in Nicaragua he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal For exceptionally meritorious service. ln the discharge of his duty of protecting lives and property, he displayed strength and initiative coupled with wis- dom and tempered by kindness and humanity . Admiral Sellers was always a staunch advocate at battle training under realistic conditions and was known as a great humanitarian. The SELLERS was completed and delivered to the Boston Naval Shipyard on 20 Qctober l96l. She was commissioned on 28 Qctober. Since commissioning the SELLERS has been engaged in Evaluation programs. SELLERS is a unit of Destroyer Squadron Six, homeported at Charleston, South Carolina. ln early September SELLERS returned to Charleston atter completing a shakedown cruise in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, and in the same month went to Quincy, Massachusetts tor partici- pation in Destroyer Week . After completing the trip to Quincy, SELLERS had settled down tor a tender period when the Cuban crisis broke. Among the first ships on the quarantine line established by the Rresident, SELLERS spent a total ot six weeks in the Caribbean operating with the Quarantine Eorces and later with Qperational Test and Evaluation Eorce, Atlantic. Completing special operations with QRTEVEQR, SELLERS returned to Charleston tor an interim shipyard availability.
