She was crowned by Alex Martinez and Phil Luarkie, 1955 foot-ball Co-captains dur- the halftime activities of the Seligman-Kingman football game. ACTIVITIES ■rifMrfiiii Senhfi i Mr.James Lennox Head Coach Football Mr.Frank Gomez Line Coach Football Mr.Harry Lennox A Football The 1955 foot-ball season was very interesting from both the players and spectators standpoint. Ninety-five percent of the boys enrolled in high school participated in the Fall sport and we had the best attendance by rooters at our games in our history. There were a number of highlights as we review the season, the winning back of the Little Brown Jug from our friendly rivals the Cott- onwood High School Red devils, the nip and tuck battle with the Kingman Bulldogs, two victories over the Flagstaff High School Junior Varsity, a Class A school. We dropped decisions to the Vik- ings of Williams High School and the Elks from Round Valley. In the season's opener we dropped a 13-6 game to Parker High School. Our halfbacks and Co-Captains, Alex Martinez and Phil Luarkie ranked with the best and Danny Tapija played an outstanding game at quarterback. Peni Torres played an outstanding game at both end and fullback. Our line with Garcia, Clarke,Hayden, Russell, L.Uat- uck, Vidrine, Straub, Vidrine, Fields played fine foot-ball and defensively they put on some heroic stands. Coaches Jim Lennox and Frank Somez are to be congeatulated on the fine showing. David Gardner was a fine manager. A.Martinez D.Tapiia P.Torres P.Luarkie Coach J.Lennox J.Straub D.Garcia P.Russell F.Vidrine Coach Gomez H.Clarke L.Fields D.Hall D.Gardner G.Honga E.Torres E . Nelson S.Havatone M.Honga H.Wilder D.Manakaja F.Martinez BJUJt The 1955-56 basket-ball season was better from a standpoint of games won and lost, and we finished in fifth place in the Western Division of the Class B North league. Cottonwood and Williams were the outstanding teams with Seligman, Mingus and Kingman about even, Ashfork, Camp Verde and Payson were weak- er than in the past. Seligmanfs main trouble was lack of height and a consistent offensive pattern. It was almost impossible to get any rebounds with the small stature of the Seligman team, so if the first shot were not good we lost the ball to the opp- onents. The team never gave up trying and as a consequence some very close games were lost to better physically equipped teams. Alex Martinez and Peni Torres, both playing their fourth year for the Antelopes, were outstanding. Others showing up well this year} SmithjClarke, Garcia, Gazzam, Felix Martinez, Tapija and Lua- rkie. The Varsity coaching was handled by Mr.Jack McLain. The Junior Varsity had a successful year under the coaching of Mr.Islas and some of the boys will provide future material for the school team. Mr.Islas also handled the Seventh-Eighth, grade team which showed a winning record for the season and were pre- sented the Sportsmanship trophy at the Parker tournament. The Class B North tournament brought Alex Martinez,All-North honors, he being given honorable mention. We lost to the Holbrook 1956 champions and to a new Lakeside High School team, the latter loss being no fault of the boys who respect their school and the student body. Peni Marvin Alex Lawrence Dick Robert Danny Harold Phil Leon Garland Sidney Benny Harlan Felix Louie Eddie Pat Randall The reward for the days of hard practice, following the strat- egy laid down by the coaching staff, adherence to training rules, and devotion by the players to a good cause, paid off for the Sel- raan Antelopes, when they won the Northern Arizona Class B champ- ionship and the right to represent the sixteen class B schools at the state championship play-off held at the University of Arizona at Tucson. Special mention should be given Captain Edgar Walema and his team-mates, Alex Martinez, Peni Torres, Danny Tapija,Har- old Clarke, Johnny Kesner, Cliff Gilliam, Francis Vidrine, Phil Luarkie, Eddie Torres, Leon Smith, Ernie Nelson, Lawrence Matuck, Davy Gardner, Lawrence Fields and Gerald Hayden Dick Garcia. Seligman captured the Western Zone championship by defeating a good Williams Viking team in the finals of the tournament play- ed at Seligman. Vidrine and Martinez pitched fine ball. In the play-off against McNary Green Devils the Antelopes won a 10-3 thriller when they suddenly found their batting eyes in the last inning. Vidrine and Martinez again pitched fine ball while the rest of the team put up an airtight defense, Harold Clarke being especially brilliant at third base. Peni Torres, after being out with injuries came in to help with the victory. The 1956 aggrega- tion looks like another winner, the team starting out with a win against the Wickenburg Wranglers of the J fest Central Class B lea- gue. The regular league season starts March 15th and the Antelopes should be hard to beat if they hustle as they did in 1955. Peni Torres, veteran catcher, will captain this years squad.
