The name has been used for eight years, as the first edition was known as the Tumbleweed. By popular vote the name was changed to La Sierra for a five year period and the students again affirmed the present name. La Sierra reflects the activities of students enrolled in the Seligman High School, musical organizations,Ath- letics, classes, clubs and personnel. The Editors are Patsy Martinez and Lila Jo Neilson, who serv- ed in the same capacity last year. They have spent much time to make the 1955 edition one of the best. The beautiful cover is the work of the staff artist, Thomas Walker, member of the graduating class. In a small school it would be impossible to put out an An- nual without the help of our advertisers and this is where John Kesner and Lawrence Fields have done an outstanding job, planning their campaign carefully and achieving splendid results. Ji .“S2 { This year’s Student Council, with John Kesner, as president has done an outstanding job. Assisting the president have been the following officers, Carol Neilson, vice-president; Lila Jo Neilson, secretary; Virdell Keene, Edgar Walema, Senior represen tatives; Gerry Hayden, Lawrence Fields, Junior Class; Patty Per- ner, treasurer, Jesse Covarrubias, Dana Hall, Sophomore Class ; Jane Davis, David Gardner, Freshmen. The Student Council sponsor- ed dances after each of the foot-ball games and every other,Wed- nesday night. President John and Secretary Lila Jo were the school representatives to the state convention of Student Councils that was held in Safford. We received valuable tips from other Councils We are a member in good standing of the National Association Stud- ent Councils. Mr.Harry Lennox is Student Council Sponsor. President Vice-Pres. Secretary Treasurer Librarian Sgt.-at-Arms A new club formed this year is Louie Sandoval John Kesner Vivian Sandoval Clifford Gilliam Patsy Larson Carol Neilson the Science Club which has been of great interest to those who enjoy scientific thought. The spon sor is Mr.Loy Hatch and he has provided interesting programs and films each week. The club goes officially by the name of the Sel- igman Super-Snoopers and its purpose is to delve deeply into any- thing of a scientific nature. The club members are drawn from the General Sicence and Biology classes primarily although membership is not limited to Science students only, but those with an inter- est in scientific studies. We expect to expand the next school term and broaden our activities. CVJ CD CD c } I £ehicf Sand cs o Ct CVJ (1 The Future Homemakers Association is one of the most important girls organizations in the school. Meetings are held on Monday eve- nings at which time the work of the organization is conducted. The club busies itself with activities for the good of both the school and the community. One of the highlights of the year is the Mother and Daughter banquet. From a charitable point of view the annual benefit Variety Show for the March of Dimes is the highlight of the years activities and records show that it is one of the best money raisers of the town campaign. Annually delegates are sent to the State convention and a large contingent attends the District meet- ings. The F.H.A. has been under strong leadership this year with Patsy Martinez, president; Mrs.Alex Martinez,Jr., Chapter Mother and Mrs.Ruth Reisdorfer, head of the Home Economics department as Advisor. Lila Jo Neilson was chosen as Homemaker of the Future. CO 0 H C'j CM The girl's Glee Club is one of the important organizations of the Seligman High School. The group meets three times a week and works on numbers to be sung at public finctions and also for the pleasure it gives. The musical organizations have been under the direction of Mr.Preston Bushman who has done an outstanding job with the young people. Each year this group represents the school at the Northern Arizona Music Festival held at Flagstaff. Patty Perner, soprano soloist, received a Superior rating at the Festival. This year the girl's Glee Club has been combined with the Male chorus to form a Mixed Glee Club. Several public appear- ances have been made by both groups. Music is a vital part of the girls and boys education in the Seligman High School. 1291102 Homecoming Queens 1291102 Football L to R-Coach Lennox,Smith,Garcia,Hayden,Kesner,Newton,Straub,Hall,Tapija.Ass't Coach McLain,Wilder Mgr.Sanchez• Second Row:Covarrubias,E.Matuck,P.Torres,A.Martinez,Capt.Walema,Fields,Luarkie,Clarke, F. The Ashfork Spartans, our rivals for years took two lickings from the Antelopes and in the second game played on the Spartans court our team ran up the hig est score ever made by a Seligman team with Alex Martinez,Clever forward breaking the school record for an individual with thirty nine points. Several of the boys broke into the Var- sity games which should stand them in good stead for next year. Leon Smith and Lawrence Matuck were the leading scorers with P. Torres playing a great floor game and Gazzam showing marked im- provement in every game. Eddie Torres and Dick Garcia were two Freshmen who should develop into fine players as will Felix Mar- tinez. We look for several to be regulars next season. Bet rAxSSeD 1292102 CN O N cn C J This year we have had one of our best Grade school teams with victories over Ashfork, Williams and Flagstaff. This rec- speaks well for future high school teams as these boys will dev- elop each year in height and experience. Our coaches were Mr.San- chez and Mr.Hatch and they worked each noon with our team. The starting five was usually Querta, Tapija,Susanytame,Casaus and Cook with Beecher,Manakaja,Smith,Wilder,Urtega, Walema getting their chance tc play. We defeated Williams away and at home, Ashfork at home and away. Flagstaff at home with losses to Kingman and Flagstaff. We are entered in the Tri-State Grammar School tournament at King- man and we should make a good showing. Harvey was the leading scorer on our team although all the boys contributed valuable points. A fine schedule has been arranged By Coach Len- nox with the Zone tournament coming to Seligman for the first time. Everything points to a good team, good season for the Antelopes. 1295102 ANTELOPES The Lettermen’s Club is formed by the group of boys who have won their school BS as regular members of one of the athletic teams. All the boys pictured have competed on one or more of the famous Antelope teams. We believe that we have a higher percent- age of boys competing in sports than any other Arizona institu- tion. Although we may not show a winning percentage in every sport, we can claim our share of victories. Our teams are known for their good sportsmanship and clean play and our coaches are chosen for their ability to impart sportsmanship and fair play to the boys. We are losing a fine group of competitors in the Seniors who finish their competition, Edgar Walema,Thomas Walk- er,John Kesner, Clifford Gilliam,John Gilliam,Louie Sandoval , Harry Stewart and Carl Newton. Each boy has been an important cog on whichever team they played on. We are fortunate in having a number of Freshmen who are able to compete on out teams, Lawrence and Ernie Matuck, Dick Garcia, Francis Vidrine, Leon Smith, Eddie Torres,David Gardner, e are fortunate in having Sophomores Jesse Covarrubias, Harold Clarke, Robert Gazzam,Daniel Tapija who have won their letters and will be with us for two more years. Junior stars are Alex Martinez , Phil Luarkie,Peni Torres,Gerald Hayden,Marv Honga,Phil Vidrine Don Van Winkle. Seligman High School is proud of these boys, it is a pleasure to have boys like Lawrence Fields,Cliff Gilliam, Edgar Walema, Danny Tapija, Thomas Walker,Jesse Covarrubias,Phil Luarkie, Alex Martinez to mention just of the few of this group, they are all champions. 1291102 's ■ 4a'WA| MMIV • y '.7 d 49-4n,t,y U °(E 1292102 c Viog Id -Of) _ 'M ,00 X 1292102 Mvertisin THE BANK OF ARIZONA cy km6tr 'zZtderal 2)e MJit d Mtirance dfarporaiiotb PRESCOTT - FLAGSTAFF - CLARKDALE - COTTONWOOD - WILLIAMS OLSON CHEVROLET CO.
