. • • We, the Senior Class of 1954, of Seligman High School respect- fully dedicate this year's edition of our school Annual,La Sierra, to one of our Elementary teachers Mrs.Marion Parker Fall. Although as individuals we have not had the privilege of sitting at the feet of this great teacher, we have had ample opportunity to see how important she has been to our teaching force. Mrs.Fall has found time to keep house, raise two fine sons, and be the sec- ond mother to many hundreds of little girls and boys. As she will retire from the teaching profession this year, after many years of fine service to the girls and boys of Arizona, we wish her many more years of happiness and health. far.Harry C.J.Lennox :s' Sunt, of Schools Administration Mr.H.Lanier President Mrs.Lydia Sishop Member Mr.Arthur Parker Clerk Harry C.J.Lennox Ruth Reisdorfer Loy G.Hatch Morris Montgomery Jack McLain Hector Guglielmo Beryl Montgomery Marion Fall Gordon Drake Nolie Halpert Violet Thornburgh Faculty Bachelor of Arts,Kalamazoo College Master of Arts,Ariz.State College Graduate work,Lehigh University, Wayne University,Univ.of Arizona Bachelor of Science,University of West Virginia. Mr.Corona was our Sponsor.Edgar,Thomas,Virdel,Louie were our representatives on the foot-ball squad;Edgar,Cliff,Johnny, were 'Varsity basketeers, with Thomas,Virdel,Oliver,Floyd,Louie on the squad. During the Fall Patsy and Lila Jo represented us at the Student Council convention at Chandler. Two of our girls Lila Jo and Patsy have maintained the highest scholastic average among the girls in the school while Cliff leads the boys in all classes scholastically. Cliff, incidentally makes bulls-eyes in both studeis and target shooting being one of the outstanding jun- ior sharnshooters in the state. We all took part in the opera Car- men, Edgar,Thomas,Patsy,Cliff,Louie,Lila,Joan,Evalina,Virdel help- ing makie this an outstanding success. After Mr.Corona left for his new assignment in Flagstaff we invited Mr.McLain to be our sponsor Patsy and Lila Jo were two of the cheer-leaders at foot-ball and basket-ball games. Oliver,Floyd,Edgar,Thomas,John,Louie.Clifford, Virdel are all members of the base-ball squad. All our girls play- ed volley-ball and are now ready for the soft-ball season. We are now planning for the blue ribbon event of the year the Junior Prom to be held in the first week in May. We believe our plans are uni- que and will rank up with those of other years. We wish the pres- ent Senior class lots of luck and believe we are ready to step in- to their shoes when they graduate. Three down, one to go;move over Seniors, here we come, the lucky thirteen. To get off on the right foot we organized our class with the following officers. President, Lawrence Fields;Vice-president,Car- ol Neilson; Secretary,Geraldine Hayden; Treasurer,John Gilliam ; Student body representatives, Marvin Honga and Jim Straub, with the selection of these officers were ready for business. We plann- ed the painting of the S , securing the materials, providing the truck and generally overseeing that the Freshman not only painted the big letter but incidentally themselves. In October our sponsor, Mr.Gordon Drake, arrived from Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. The only one in the class who could help his orchestra was Lawrence and his saxaphone, but among our girls are some of the good singers.V e were well represented in foot-ball with Gerald,Dale,Peni,Jim, Mar- vin, Alex and Lawrence. All the girls were members of the Pep Club and marched at the foot-ball games. In basket-ball Alex and Peni were known as the Pep twins and their hustling brand of play made them a feared pair. To bolster last years base-ball league champs are Alex,Peni,John,Tommy,Dale,Bill,Marvin and Lawrence. The class sponsored the Christmas dance and have provided a tidy nest egg for future activities. John has entered a number of state rifle shoots with outstanding success. Joan, Carol and John have led the class in scholastic success. i.arvin is an outstanding success with his art work, several of his efforts being entered in a state contest. C5 CM Freshmen We began the year by organizing and electing officers, with the following students being chosen to serve the class;President Andy Sanchez; Vice-president, Vivian Sandoval Secretary-Treasurer, Patty Perner; Class representatives, Jesse Covarrubias, Pat Cas- aus. During the first month we learned that high school is very different from the elementary grades, more study, more homework and more activities. In October we led the annual trek to paint the S and we enjoyed it very much. After doing our part under the watchful eyes of the Sophomores we enjoyed a picnic lunch. In October our new music supervisor, Mr.Drake, arrived from Den- ver and with his assistance we formed the freshman dance orches- tra. Patty, Harold, Andy, Phyllis,Pat, played the piano, trombone, Drums,Guitar and Bass Violin. Patsy, Vivian, Dana and Fatty were the vocalists. We made our first professional appearance at a pub- lic dance. In athletics our boys have been well represented with Harold, Pat,Harry,Jesse,Daniel,Ernie all on the squad. In basket- ball, Harold,Daniel and Jesse were on the 'Varsity squad. In base- ball Harold, Pat,Harry,Daniel,Ernie are at present fighting for a place in the regular line-up. Our Andy is indispensible to teams and coaches as the Manager. All our girls are playing volley-ball and soft-ball with Dixie being an outstanding Ditcher. e welcom- ed Leota Suminimo back after a short spell in California. Andy has carried the best scholastic average for the class with Patty and Patsy close behind. Mr.Montgomery has been a fine advisor. The Student Council has been very active this year. It was organized in September when the students elected Patsy Martin- ez as president; Louie Sandoval, vice-president; Paula Moya as Secretary-treasurer. The classes met and elected representativ- es to the Student Council; Seniors,Freddy Newton, Gary Bailey; Juniors, John Kesner, Cliford Gilliam; Sophomores, Marvin Hon- ga, Lawrence Fields; Freshman, Pat Casaus, Jesse Covarrubias. As Lawrence Fields was elected to serve as treasurer, Jimmy Straub was elected Sophomore representative. The first order of business was the planning of the regu- lar S day when the freshmen paint the school letter about five miles northwest of town. The student council footed the bill for the sandwiches, cake and soft drinks. The Homecom- ing was partially in the hands of the Student Council coop- erating with the F.H.A. Patsy Martinez and Lila Jo Neilson were the representatives at the meeting of State Associations held at Chandler High School. Both girls enjoyed the trip and gave excellent reports on their return. School Assembly pro- grams at which professional artists perform are under the jur- isdiction of the student council. Dance Band 1292130 Glee Club ANTELOPES Letterman's Club The Lettermen's Club is composed of boys who have won their letters in some sport while enrolled in the Seligman High School. It is an honor to wear the 3 which not only signifies excellen- ce in sports but an ability to keep up a passing grade in school subjects. Seligman, with a high school enrollment of only fifty boys and girls supports teams in eleven man foot-ball, basket- ball and base-ball. Some years we also have track teams. We have a fine group of coaches, regular members of our faculty. Games are scheduled with all Northern Arizona Class B high schools, but we are according to our enrollment only Class C . Cur teams are feared for their competitive spirit, known for their good sports- manship. Our won and lost record is far beyond many schools who have greater enrollment. Last year we were Western league champ- ions in base-ball and by the slimmest margin in an overtime game lost the chance to represent the North at the state championships. Our coaches this year have been Mr.Corona,Mr.McLain in foot- ball; Mr.McLain, Hr.Hatch in basket-ball; Mr.Lennox in base-ball. Theyfhave given us many hours of patient drills to improve team play. As we are such a small school it is not uncommon for any boy to win three letters in one year. No one sport is stressed to the exclusion of another. Bach sport is taken in its season with the idea of enjoying it to ti}e fullest measure. We know that the boys who have competed for Seligman High School will carry with them into life a fierce competitive spirit always remembering the lessons of good sportsmanshin learned on the athletic fields. ANTELOPES flunioti of. junior chapter of The Future Homemakers of America was organ- this year. They have the same goals as the senior chapter. F.H.A.Motto - Toward New Horizons. We started on Aug- ust 31st with about thirty-five students. Gradually the enrollment increased with peak at 53. The laying of a new gas line brought us some fine new friends from all over the United States. We were sor- ry to see them go even if it meant more room for us to stretch our legs. Mr.McLain was our teacher for the first semester and then we had Mr.Guglielmo. A number of the boys reported for Junior High foot-ball practice and we are proud that we could help the school team to develop. Ernie,Dick,Lawrence,Pat,Joe,Leon all were out for practice. In basket-ball we had a very fine grammar school team. Ernie,Leon,Dick, ,David,Pat,Allen,Eddie,Ernie Martinez,Louie were valuable members. In base-ball Dick,Francis,Eddie,David,Lawrence are practicing with the 'Varsity so they will learn the system. We have enjoyed out musical activities as many of us are members of the band and orchestra. Karen,Martha Nancy,Jeanettehave led the cheers at the games. Many of the girls were members of the March- ing squad during the foot-ball season. We will enter our champion speller in the county contest. Helen Larson is our champion pop- corn popper for the basket-ball games. Audry Walema is the best baton twirler in the school appearing in a solo number at the March of Dimes show. Sharon Sheraden played a prominent part in the musi- cal score of the opera Carmen. Beverly has helped with the cheer- leading. We of the eighth grade are looking forward to entering high school in September and hope to improve on our record in all activities. 5c.V o « v-sW . Ac. (Not in picture,E.Walema.J.Straub) Although we can't claim a winning season as far as games won and lost are concerned, we had a scrappy eleven that gave ev- erything they had. In almost every game we were outweighed but the team made up for this with a spirited offense built around A.Martinez,G.Martinez,Torres and Tapija. Three of these four will return next year for another season as will most of the squad. Coach Gilbert Corona and Coach Jack McLain made an ideal team and worked hard and long hours to put out this squad. We lost Coach Corona who is now with the Flagstaff Eagles. Nest year a very attractive schedule has been arranged with most of the games at home and with the past season's experience we should improve our record. By graduation we lose Freddy Newton and Bob Bravo who played fine games all year. They will be missed. The oeligman Antelopes reached their neak at the zone tournament held at Kingman and defeated first the Ashfork Bpartans and in the finals shut out the Kingman 3ull dogs 4-0 to garner the championship. Phil 3ravo pitched a mas- terful game and he was aided by a tremendous triple by Walema. Bob 3ravo, Glen Olson Oliver Wilder and Gilbert i.iartinex did an outstanding job of backing up Phil. The following week the Antelooes went to Winslow for the chamoionshio finals. The team was keyed up fcr this game as the winner would represent this section at the state finals at Tucson. Jeligman, leading team from the 'Western Zone, put up a great battle and lost in a ten inning thriller 5-4. The Antelopes led 4-3 -with two men out in the last inning when Watson doubled and scored on an overthrow. Bravo pitched a masterful game. After graduation he was signed to a Detroit Tiger farm team. The 1954 orosnects are bright if the hitting can be im- proved. Development of players through the Little League and Junior League is paying off. 3ob Bravo gives evidence of hand- liric the pitchers chores in fine fashion, backed up by Jdgar v.alema and Alex hartinez. At the time of writing this article Coach Lennox has selected a tentative starting line-up with Oliver Wilder,3ob Bravo,Bdgar vvalema,Floyd Querta,Harold Clarke Alex Lartinez! John Kesner,Peni Torres,Thomas walker.Clifford Gilliam, Gerald gayden, Lawrence Fields,Tommy and Bill Proctor, Marvin Honga the leading candidates. 1292139 1291131) In a Happy Mood Carol Vivian Lila Jo Patty Patsy Majorettes s4U3pnA-5 i« Ai(' b 1291139 1293139 VS-£SU ' 9 0 J W° 1291139 npvA A- °M 1291139 •BXXV G -s-dvk CS. va o .v r -)pvi 1291139 1293139 THE BANK OF ARIZONA c4Um6tr 'zfedtral ‘St-epodit dfndwmue (Zb poratum, PRESCOTT - FLAGSTAFF - CLARKDALE - COTTONWOOD - WILLIAMS 0L30N CHEVROLET CO.
