■ Dedication Mr. Morris Montgomery We, the Senior Class of 1953 respectfully dedicate our Seligman High School Annual, La Sierra, to our class sponsor, and friend Mr.Morris Montgomery. All of us at some time in our high school career have been under his instruction and we have found him at all times to be a very competent instructor,fair- minded and a friend to us all. Under his supervision and guid- ance our 1952 Junior Prom was declared to be tops in decora- tion and Mr.Montgomery has given much time and effort to assist us in raising funds to carry out our projects. We will be ever thankful that we have come under Mr.Montgomery's influence. Mr.Morris Montgomery is a graduate of Arizona State Coll- ege at Flagstaff where he majored in Industrial Arts. During World War II he graduated from officer's material school with a commission. He served with the 13th Airborne Division over- seas. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. His first and only teaching position has been in Seligman where he teaches all classes in Industrial Arts and Citizenship. Mr. Montgomery is an ardent hunter and fisherman and week-ends he tries to make some good hunting or fishing spot in Arizona. The Class of 1953 Board of Education - r. These students were as fellows; Dora DeAlva, Rae Dee Banks, Sonny Casaus, Bill Dalby, Phil -ravo Marvin Fuller, Mary Nelson, Glenn Olson, Canda Salas and Les- lie Torres. We welcomed two new additions to our class, Doris Bris- tow from Prescott High School and Thomas Peterson from Mesa High T-hool. At our organization meeting Thomas Peterson was elected our president, Glenn Olson and Doris Bristow our class representatives. Our faculty sponsor for four years has been Mr.Morris Montgomery. The first activity was that of raising funds and a nice prof- it was made on a beautiful cedar chest. The proceeds are to be used for our annual Ditch Day. At the Christmas vacation we lost Bill Dalby who moved back to Pennsylvania where he re-entered the Schenley High School. Dora De Alva became Mrs.Manuel Rincon early in the year, but she will be present for graduation. Leslie Torres beckoned to a call from Uncle Sam and is now in training at Ft.Lewis, Washington; he will receive his diploma in May. Bill, Glenn, Pete, Phil, Leslie, Sonny and Marvin were valued members of the foot-ball squad. Glenn, Marvin, Phil and Sonny repeat- ed as members of the basket-ball team. Dora and Canda were two of the four cheerleaders, Doris and Rae Dee the two top majorettes. We all enjoyed the annual trip to Kingman for the Senior pictures for the hall placque and La Sierra. We are now planning our Ditch Day at Lake Mead. Three big events to come are the Junior-Senior Prom, our Class Night and then Graduation exercises. We the Seniors of 1953, wish to thank our principal, teachers for helping to make it possible for us to march down the aisle. Sophomore Class We have spent a busy and profitable year as the Sophomores added one subject to the regular four. We are taking leathercraft, metal craft and lapidary instruction. Clifford, Virdell,Johnny,Ed- gar and Gilbert reported for foot-ball and all played in most of the games. We were joined by Tony Merken from a California Junior High School. Tony was the school reporter for the athletic games. Lila Jo and Patsy were elected two of the cheer-leaders by the stu- dent body and they have done a great deal to keep up the enthus - iasm at the foot-ball and basket-ball games. Joan was a member of the Pep Squad. In basket-ball Edgar and Gilbert won regular start- ing positions on the Varsity while Clifford,Virdell,Johnny and Thom as were valued members of the reserve squad. Johnny had the mis - fortune to break his arm in the Snowflake game but recovered quick ly and finished the basket-ball season. In base-ball Edgar has nail- ed down first base and Gilbert is playing second. Thomas will play in games as he is a good fielder; Clifford,Virdell and Johnny are also or the squad. Our sponsor is Mr.Corona and we are now busily practicing a play that we will put on this Spring. The Sophomores have the highest percentage of students in any class making the school Honor Roll. FRESHMAN HISTORY V e organized in September and elected the following officers to lead us during our first year in high school,-President,Louie Sandoval; Vice-president,J.CovarrufciasSecretary,Carol Jeilson; Treasurer, Laurence Fields; Class representatives,Geraldine Hay- den and John Gilliam. One of our biggest chores was the paint - of the 3 but we got the job done and then enjoyed the picnic lunch provided by the school. Laurence Fields,John Gilliam,Peni -orres, Gerald Hayden, Dale Hall, Louie Sandival,Jimmy Straub, and Alex Martinez reported for foot-ball with Alex,John,Laurence and Peni winning letters. Peni repeated in basket-ball and base- ball as did Alex. Peni and Alex are regular outfielders. Geraldine,Carol,Labelene,Cecilia and Joanne were members of the girls chorus. The girls have enjoyed the physical educa- tion classes and the games played. Mrs.Reisdorfer is our spon- spr. Freshmen Class f l 'i- _ Seventh Grade Eighth Grade In September when we came to school we were greeted by a new teacher, Mr.Jack McLain. While he was a stranger at first it did not take us long to become acquainted and we have found him good- natured but expecting us to make the most of our opportunities. Our first activity was the selling of magazine subscriptions to make money for class parties, picnics, etc. In the contest that was part of the selling program the Seventh graders came out ahead. 1ori? Hayley and Dixie Keville were the champion saleswomen and thej received fine prizes from the company. We also had a Junior High basket-ball team consisting of the fol- n pl5yers' Pat Russe1' Erny Martinez, Leon Smith,Harold Clark, -'avid Gardner, Dick Garcia, Daniel Taoija,Wilfred Salas,Felix Mar- rinez and Jesse Covarrubias. Pat Casaus was the manager of the high school basket-ball team. fprSOt‘Vhe seventh and eighth grades are heavy investors in the De ense stamp program which they hope will blossom into bonds. Some Havl 6 9Jrls Played on the volley ball team, Sally Bristow, Norie •aykaren Perner, Dana Hall, Dorothy Martinez, Esper Moya,Viv- • ?val' PatsY Larson, Dixie Keville and Patty Perner. We had oome girls interested in cheerleading, Vivian Sandoval, Dorothy Mar tlnez and Patty Perner. , 'We, of the Eighth grade, are anxiously looking forward to en- uring Seligman High School. We wish to thank our teachers for tak- pains with us to insure that we have a good foundation for the i!1?? school courses to come. We are happy that a good group of sev- enth graders are ready to take our places. FCJR ACES - Lila Jo,Canda, Patsy, Dora FOOTBALL The biggest turn out of freshman and sophomores greeted Coaches Corona and McClain this season when football started. Only seven returning lettermen were available to prepare for the opening game against the Vikings from Williams. In the opener the Vikings won by a 26-6 score. The second game saw one of the best KcNary teams in years swamp the locals by a 37-7 nod. Seligman travelled to Cottonwood for the third encounter and after a poor showing in the first half played Cottonwood to an even score the second half and succumbed 33-12. The Winslow Bullpups were next on the schedule and the Antelopes won the first game of the season 25—0. In that game the freshman and sophomores played the visitors to a standstill for half of the game. Seligman made it two in a row in a hard fought game with the Flagstaff Eaglets and emerged victorious 13—7. Prescott proved to be too strong at mid-point of the season and came out on top by a 26-0 score. The second game with Cottonwood was a rough, hard hitting game that saw players ejected from both sides. Cottonwood won the encounter 35-0 but the score was not indicative of the game. The eighth game saw the locals end a famine when they triumphed over the Lobos from Snowflake by a convincing 31-13 rout. It was Seligman1s first triumph since the two schools have been playing each other. The final game saw seven seniors playing their last game at Needles California. The river edge boys won 19—0 when the Seligman team failed to function. Casaus,Olson and Phil Bravo were holdovers from last year's team. New men to fill the gaps caused by the graduation of Beyard,Caldera and Martinex were Walema, A. Martinez and G.Martinez. Flagstaff, Mingus and Cottonwood were clearly our superiors but we gave every other team a tussle. Coach Jack McLain, former Arizona State player as- sumed the coaching reins for the first time and he did a fine job. Victories were scored over Sanders,AshFork(twice),Camp Verde, Kingman and Round Valley. THE RECORD o. H. o. 40 - 51 Williams S.H.3. 48 - 37 Sanders 3.H.S. 27 - 51 Mingus 3.H.S. 31 - 39 Camp Verde o. Seligman split a pair of games with the King- man Bulldogs, defeated Williams Vikings in a single encoun- ter. In the tournament at Kingman, the Antelopes lost to the Mingus team, whom they had defeated earlier in the season. The game was a heart breaker to lose as Phil Bravo struck out t en men and only allowed three hits. Outstanding play- ers for the Antelopes were Phil Bravo, Bob Bravo,Sonny Cas- aus, Glenn Olson, Oliver Wilder, Gilbert Martinez, Leslie Torres, Freddy Newton, Marvin Fuller,Bill Dalby and Johnny Kesner, Edgar Walema As this article is written the 1953 team should be a better team than last season. Phil Bravo, star pitcher is back as are Glenn Olson, Gilbert Martinez, Sonny Casaus,Ed- gar Walema. To add to these players are two freshmen, Alex Martinez and Peni Torres, products of Little League and Jun- ior Leagues. Coach Lennox expects to mould a team from the following boys, Glenn Olson, Sonny Casaus, Phil Bravo, Bob Bravo who is the best outfielder in Seligman history, Gil- bert Martinez, Edgar Walema, Thomas Walker, Peni Torres,Al- ex Martinez, Marvin Fuller, Garry Bailey. Games will be sched- uled with Williams, Ashfork, Kingman, Flagstaff, McNary and Needles, California. Track Alfred Caldera, Joe Beyard, Mike Martinez and David Brown formed the 1952 track team, with Alfred, Joe and Dave scoring in the Northern championships. As a reward for four years of work Al, Joe and Mike were the guests of Coach Cor- ona and Mr.Lennox at the State championships at Tucson. As it looks now there may not be sufficient boys for a track team this year. Activities Seligman High School is proud of the many extra-curricular activities it supports. We believe that the old adage All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy is true and the administra- tion of the school has provided varied activities for both the girls and boys. Activities for the girls during the school year have been physical education, F.H.A., and Music. After foot-ball season was concluded Mr.Corona took over the direction of the physi- cal education program for girls. Both the junior high and sen- ior high girls were combined for greater efficiency. Volley - ball, basket-ball, badminton proved to be popular with all the girls. Both individual and team competition was featured and a point score was kept for each girl so they might win the school letter. With the advent of Spring soft-ball and tennis seem to be the most popular sports. Inter-school games have been arrang- ed with the girls physical classes from Ashfork, Williams and Kingman. Another very important activity for girls is the Future Home-makers Association under the direction of Mrs.Ruth Reis - dorger. Home Economics director. Seligman High School has been represented at both the regional and state association meet- ings by delegates chosen by the girls themselves. One of the highlights was the trip to state convention at Tempe. The girls have a regular meeting night where plans are laid for the many F.H.A. activities. The F.H.A. girls have earned more money for •March of Dimes than any other organization each year. Three times a week the sixth period the girls meet to sing in the Girls Chorus. The school owns a fine library of music and the girls attend the Northern Arizona High School Music Festival. Boys extra-curricular activities are foot-ball, basket-ball, base-ball and track. Although a small high school eleven man foot ball is played with fine success. Our basket-ball team is always feared by the larger schools. In base-ball our team has achieved splendid results as have the track entries. A lettermen's organ- ization was formed three years ago to which all lettermen belong. Dramatics have their place in our program with an operetta at Christmas and a three-act play to be presented this Spring by the sophomore class. The student body is regularly organized with a set of offi- cers and class representatives which meet to discuss school prob- lems at various intervals. The student council supervises the an- nual painting of the 3 . This year will be highlighted by an all- high school picnic. We are an accredited Class B high school un- der North Central standards and our graduates are making good in the colleges of their choice. We are proud of our school board, our faculty and our students. Annual Marvin Fuller Business Manager Mr .Lennox Annual Advisor Glenn Olson Adv. The girls chorus this year has been under the direction of Mr.Christopher Overly, a graduate of the Chicago Conservatory of Music. The seventh, eighth, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and Seniors meet three times a week to form the chorus. We have learned a number of new pieces and the group appeared at one of the Parent-Teacher meetings. As this article is written we are practicing for the Northern Arizona Music Festival to be held in Flagstaff in mid-April. We will appear in one ensemble num- ber Green Cathedral and our Girls Trio will also sing. The trip to Flagstaff is always the highlight of the music season as talented musicians from all the northern high schools are present. We are hoping to make a good showing at Flagstaff.
