I cried, believing I was dream ng 'Are you an animal, spirit, or a devil? I gasped I am, slowly growled the ghostly visitor, 'The Wildcat ' HI came at your bidding you just called on the memory of the class of 1951, and I am he1 True, I did remember thinking about my classmates 'The career of the class of l9Sl, chanted the Wildcat, like an echo to my thoughts, 'has been romantic and exciting. It started with just a little over two handfuls of frightened freshmen. They were Mary Ann Canaga, Alvira Junneman, Madonna Koerperich, Clara Humm, Donna Weis, Edith Trimble, Opal Lea Smith, Jean Rome, and Betty Rome, Clarence Knopp and Charles Arnold. The best event of the year was initiation, where we humbly bowed our heads the dign fied seniors. 'le were defin tely green and it was the only time we ever thought of coming to school in our P J's, bare footed. For the first few weeks nothing could be heard but few timid squeaks from the eleven. Finally they got the 'swing of high school life and have had a tremendously good time ever since. Class officers were Betty Rome-President, ladonna Koer- perich-Vice-President, and Jean Rome-Secretary and treasurer. Our sponsor was Miss Swan, and later Miss Nancy Killem. It was upon a midnight dreary, just a few nights before commen- to a I1 NEarly the next year, continued the shadowy figure, clenching its claws, Uthey elected Betty Rome as president, Donna Weis Vice president and Jean Home as Secretary and Treasurer Miss Bolton was the sponsor The number in the class had dwindled to seven Charles Arnold changed to Leoville, Madonna Koerperich went to Overlin Alvira Junneman dropped school entirely Clarence Knopp dropped, and at the end of the first semester Mary Ann Cana ga went to Oberlin The outstanding event of the year was 'An April Fool's Partyusponsored by the Sopho ore class H 'When the class reached the Jun or year,' bellowed the Wildcat enthusiastically, 'There were but six members in the class Opal Lea Smith, Donna Weis, Clara Mumm, Jean Home, Edith Trimble, and Betty Rome, with Hrs Anderson as sponsor for the first semester and Irs Lukinchook as sponsor for the second semester This was a busy year Every Junior took part in the school athletics when a girls basketball team was organized They also played volley ball and softball The Junior play, 'No Soap', coached by Hr Lukinchook, was very successful In the Spring, the Jun ors gave the traditional Junior-Senior Banquet, the theme of which was A Dutch Garden U The biology class was especially enjoyed by every one that year because of our pet bird, Penelope, and turtle, Oscar Jean Rome was President that year Donna Weis Vice President and Clara Mumm, secretary and Treasurer The Junior year was brought There was a short silence, then the Wildcat said, 'All the Juniors came back again in the fall of 1950, the year that Selden High School was to have an all girl graduating class Jean Rome was elected President, Donna Weis, Vice president, and Betty Rome Secretary and Treasurer Hr Lukinchook was our sponsor All the girls participated in the ball teams The most exciting and the first game we won, was with Rexford The Seniors began planning S R H S's first annual They also published the school paper That year was spent in various activities to earn money for their sneak, such as the Senior Play, food sales, serving at ball games, ect 0 In the silence that followed I thought of the things the noc turnal disturber had told me At last I turned to him and said nTell me what vou are, and why you speak to me of those past days 'I,' slowly answered my visitor, 'am the spirit of S H H S e spirit of the class of Sl, the spirit of the past Those days are now gone forever. I am but their shade, their memory W NBut will the girls who have graduated ever experience the joys of their high school life again?' I, quiovered slowly: Came the deathlike inaper, 'Never Nevermore ' The morning sun found me at my desk I wondered why I was still there. Then I remembered the midnight visit of the spirit animal. Was it a dream? On the cornor of m desk lay 'The li1dcat,' the first annual of S R H S,published by the Seniors of 1951. . . . as 0 . , ' 1 I to a happy close with a picnic and hike near the Oberlin Lake.H . . i . . . , . . .
