There is always some doubts when a team is a young as ours, but this team did nothing but work and compete very hard and show rapid and steady improvement. Counting summer running, some of the boys did 4 to 500 miles of work in preparation for out state meet. We had beautiful weather throughout the sea- son and except for a very few blisters and some slight muscle pulls we stayed very healthy. We immediately began to gain a reputation for ourselves by winning all of the small meets we were in and placing well in the big ones. As it turned out we were undefeated against class “C schools, had a narrow loss to one class “B school which we later avenged, and beat several class “A” schools and even a couple of class “AA teams in the course of the regular season. At the state meet on October 24 we were confident and the boys showed a tremendous amount of desire as they ran an inspired race and won our first State Championship in Boys Cross-Country in the last ten years. The Blackhawks as usual were led by sensational sophomore Joe Beatty as he took charge early in the race and won going away to become perhaps the first sophomore to ever win the class “C” boys race. The best freshman in the state was our Brett Haines as he placed 10th. Strong junior Chriss Rammell was 13th while our only senior on the varsity, Bill Wood, was 18th. The second best freshman io the state, Dan Jassor. was 27th for us and small but scrappy junior Wade Hallam was 29th. Junior Marvit Door, a patient marathon runner, was 53rd in the race out of 175 runners and thus we had a terrific score of 69 which may be the lowest score in the history of class “C” cross-country meets. Only number four runner. Bill Wood, and alternate. Bill Gillespie, will graduate and thus we should be strong con- tenders for the championship again next year.—Coach Bar- etta — Football Beaten by teams ranked in the top of Class “C the 1981 Blackhawks young team accompanied by a few veterans and four starters who had never participated in football, came within one win of having the best winning percentage in Seeley- Swan football history. The ’81 Blackhawks also boasted defensive player Steve Gossard, as the only All-State player in Seeley History. We never won a meet but always scored high as we took on some of the best C, B, and A schools in Western Montana. We placed a high second in the District 12C Meet losing only to Drummond, a team with a tremendous amount of depth. In the District meet Steve Gossard won the long jump and took second in the triple jump. Lanny Broderick won the intermediate hurdles. Shawn Holmes won the 800 and was second in the 400. Sophomore Joe Beatty won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and I-eonard Schaff, Lanny Borderick, Roger Miller, and Shawn Holmes won the 1600 meter relay in school record time. On May 19, we placed second in the Western Division Class “C Meet which gave us our first divisional trophy in the history of the school. Divisional champions were Shawn Holmes in the 800, Joe Beatty in the 1600 and 3200, and Leonard Schaff, Lanny Broderick, Roger Mill- er, and Shawn Holmes with another school record-set- ting 1600 metrer relay. On May 28 and 29, we took part in a very cold and wet but exciting State Track Meet in Billings. We were very disappointed to miss a state trophy by one point, but we still finished fourth out of 96 schools which was our highest finish in the history of the school. Our scoring at State was done by Leonard Schaff, Lanny Broderick, Roger Miller, and Shawn Holmes with a fifth in the 1600 meter relay; Shawn Holmes took second in the 800 meter run; and super sophomore Joe Beatty became only our second state state champion ever when he ran away with both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Joe was our leading scorer for the year with 91 points and Shawn was second. With those two plus seventeen other lettermen returning we plan on having an even stronger team next year. f 9 f • J‘ y 9 I • $ 41 % J9 V •§• • $' v • h: 1 '' m ! r 0 ? “Stfcle, Crampons 1981’ ®. 1. to r. 1st row- Chris Rammed, Wade Hallam, Brett Haines, Dan Jasso, Joe Beatty. 2nd row- Bid Wood, John Baretta, Marvit Door, Coach Dan Baretta 1. to r. 1st row- Debbie Herron, Marty Hallam, Chuck Paxton, Matt Bartley, Brett Haines, Knut Hoelstad, I ee Schaff, Jeff Farra, Amy Foote. 2nd row- Merrilx u Flake, Leonard Schaff, Austin Dillree, Ross Lemons, Mike Tefoe, John Hallam, Shawn Holmes, Tony Hulett, Sherry Hahn, Tonya Rammell. 3rd row- Asst.
