snow country ’79 annual staff photographers susan davis vvanda weaver kelly best mr. pagett rachel vannoy tammy erickson larae conley jim teafoe jaylund rammell stu eschenbacker osudjap dSUdJJO ;of Htiov n s) ppuir- the ’78 football season The 1978-79 Football season was a memorable one. Despite a 3-4 win-loss record, the players finished the season with enthusiasm. The season could have been better, of course, but injuries and the schedule were awesome. The Blackhawks started their season at home against Arlee. The awesome running attack of Tom Walker and Jim Teafoe plus a crushing defense gave SSHS a 34-14 win. The second game was away. Philipsburg, which later was to be the district champion, was ready. The Blackhawks did well, but mental mistakes resulted in their first loss 24-14. In game three, the Charlo Vikings came to town. Kevin Frye, Harry Johnson, and Steve Johnson stopped the run and held Charlo at bay giving SSHS a 18-16 halltime lead. Unfortunately the second half belonged to Charlo and they won 32-24. Game four was against co-leader, undefeated Hot Springs at Hot Springs. Seeley Swan pulled within 22-20 in the third quarter only to lose 30-22, but Jim Teafoe had one of his best games. Homecoming was against Superior. Tom Walker burst 64 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and Chuck Jacobs caught a 22 yard pass from Jeff Tanner on the last play from scrimmage for a touchdown as SSHS won 51-6. St. Regis was tough on their homefield. Seeley Swan broke to a 16-0 lead only to have the Tigers tie it up at halftime. Then, in the third quarter, quarterback Jeff Tanner found himself stuck with the ball on a broken play and won the game with a 52 yard touchdown run. It was his best game in his four year career. The final game was against Alberton at home. The Blackhawks marched the ball to pay dirt on the first possession, but injuries and a faulty pass defense was all the edge Alberton needed to win 42-26. Wayne Cahoon and Guy Johnson will always be remembered for their defensive play throughout the season, while Tom Montgomery was an asset at left end. These three Seniors plus Jeff Tanner, Jim Teafoe, Tom Walker, and Russ Conley left SSHS football with the best season in 9 years. running for s.s.h.s.s cross-country champs «, Seeley-Swan Girls Cross Country team had an outstanding season winning all of their major meets. On October 14 at the University of Montana Invitational Meet, Chris Jungers set a new meet record in the Girls Novice race winning 24 1 2 seconds in front of the second place runner. The team went on to Yin the 1st place trophy at the Poison Invitational. Climaxing the season was the victory' of the Montana State Girls Cross Country Race for Class B and C schools at Helena. The championship team consisted of senior, LaRae Conley; junior, Dora Morris; sophomore, Pam Himes; freshmen, Debbie Herron, Chris Jungers, Robin Pilsworth, and Tonya Rammell. LaRae, Pam and Chris won individual gold medals. All won team gold medals and black letters. 1978 was a great season for girls cross country at Seeley-Swan because of a great team. They trained hard and were not thwarted by bears, snakes, barking dogs, or an occasionally lost coach. They won with Style ! «CDZVjMUI - - 32Xf? 5VW I 1 f Rammell, and Coach Baretta. Bottom row-7!to r. «■ LaRae Coach Cooper • . f i • We began the 1978 season with high hopes and a lot of confidence as we had six veteran runners, including two seniors. Our confidence was well- founded as we were undefeated in the small local meets as long as we had our full team healthy and running. We ran over 400 miles in our ten weeks of training and it paid off as we won the Poison invitational meet (again) over some area Class B and A teams, and we knew we were ready for State. The State Meet gave us both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat'' within the space of one hour. We ran a fine race as out of 145 runners Bob Baier finished a blaring 4th, Randy Frye 20th, Wes Rammell 21st, Dean Dellwo 29th, and Mike Haines 31st to complete the scoring. For this excellent effort we were soon rewarded with the state championship trophy. Our jubilation was short-lived, however, as one hour later the trophy was taken away from us. In a narrow and controversial decision an opposing runner had been disqualified and later reinstated. The result for us was that we were state runners-up by 7 points rather than champions. Thus we were both disappointed and proud and will have to wait another year for the elusive state championship trophy. We had the kids to win it all, had everything worked out as it could have. As it turned out, we were in Thompson Falls' shadow all season. They beat us by a slight margin at the Mission Tourney as the season opened. They beat us by 2 points at Divisionals and gave us our only dual loss of the season. In all 3 cases we frittered it away by giving away matches we had as good as won. I feel members and coaches should equally share the responsibility for this. We just didn't put it together in such a way that we could win the big ones. On the bright side, we did have two State Champions and one runner-up. Jeff Tanner won his second straight Championship. Wes Rammell wrestled the best match of his high school career to beat Fisher from Thompson Falls and win the State Title. Wayne Cahoon, struggling to regain the conditioning he had lost to a bout with the flu, lost in the finals to Davis of Thompson Falls. Wayne is one of the most 22 dedicated wrestlers we have had and is a fine college prospect. Curtis Gehrke is also a good wrestler and could make his mark in the college ranks. Tom Montgomery and Randy Hanson lost heartbreakers in the Divisional and didn't qualify for State. These six seniors will be greatly missed and hard to replace. Shane Rose and Harry Johnson, juniors, along with Wayne Tanner, a freshman qualified for State; but they didn't make it through the competition. Curtis Gehrke placed second at State as a sophomore two eyars ago. The future of wrestling at Seeley Swan High School looks bright. Mr. Byron Anderson is a good dedicated coach and there are a number of good young wrestlers returning. This group will be bolstered by a crop of experienced freshmen. After 15 years as Head Wrestling Coach, it's not an easy thing to leave the program. Wrestling is a big thing in my life. Good luck to all. Carl D. We had virtually the same team as last year with the short, but husky juniors doing some rugged rebounding and the sophomores providing some fine outside shooting. This combination allowed us to achieve a 13 win, 3 loss record including a thrilling 3-overtime victory the JV's at Florence. As a young and inexperienced team which lacked speed, we needed to get outside and work on our field events. But the snow, rain and bone-chilling cold did not permit it and consequently we never did get properly prepared. Additionally, our district was very tough this year as it w'as loaded with experienced sprinters and field event competitors. In spite of that fact we were able to take fourth in the district, finishing only fourteen points behind the championship team. Dave Stewart was divisional high jump champion with an excellent leap of 6'2 , and we took four boys to state. At state we placed 13th out of 90 teams. Stuart Eschenbacher ran a strong third in the high hurdles and as a junior he will return to try for a state championship next year. Senior Jim Teafoe set a new school record with a tremendous leap of 20 9 1 2 while placing second in the long jump at the state meet. Jim was our captain this year and, as always, his tremendous enthusiasm and competitive desire were an inspiration to us all. His graduation will leave a gaping hole in the ranks of our track team in the years to come. - Coach Baretta Cindy Bush LaRae Conley Clay Dunbar Tawni Byrd Russ Conley Tammy Erickson Wayne Cahoon Toby Davis Curtis Gehrke Carla Cole Dean Dellwo Texanna Goodman 61 seniors 62 Randy Hanson Val Kaser Ted Needles Chuck Jacobs Barrie Lewis Molly O'Kelley Bucky Johnson Gerri Meyer Jeff Pocha Guy Johnson Tom Montgomery' Wes Rammell Jeff Tanner Jim Teafoe Betty Welch Sharon Williams Class Officers: Molly O'Kelley, Texanna Goodman, and Sharon Williams George Ruppert Faith Vannoy Lori Wilhelm Dave Stewart Tom Walker Dawn Wood senior credits — Cindy Bush-Pep Club: 1, 2, 3, 4, Basketball 1,2, 3, 4 Gymnastics 1, 2 Track 1, 2 Student Senate 1,2, 3 State Club 2, 3 Valkeryies (drill team) 2 Transfer from Hellgate 4 Wayne Cahoon: Wrestling 1, 2, 3, 4 Football 1,3,4 LaRae Conley: Cross Country 1, 2, 3, 4 Basketball 1, 2, 3,4 Track 1,2,3 Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Wrestling Cheerleader 2 Annual Staff 3 Statistition 4 Toby Davis: Basketball 1, 2 Track 1 Librarian 3, 4 Tammy Erickson: Transfer from Idaho 1 Pep Club 2, 3, 4 Wrestling Cheerleader 2 Basketball 2 Vice President 3 Wrestling Manager 3 Football Statistition 3 Prom Oueen 3 Annual Staff 3 Pep Club Secretary 4 Football Manager 4 Office Girl 4 Science Aid 4 Honor Roll 2, 3, 4 Texanna Goodman: Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 Track 1, 2, 3 Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Senate 1 Annual Staff 1, 2 House of Representatives 2 Vice President 4 Member of Student Government 4 Randy Hanson: Basketball 1 Track 1, 2, 3 Football 1 Wrestling 2,3,4 Guy Johnson: Football 1, 2, 3, 4 Wrestling 1, 2, 3, Track 1,3,4 Val Kaser: Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Honor Roll 1, 2, 3, 4 School Play 1 Track 1 Chorus 1, 4 Annual Staff 2, 3 Football Cheerleader 2 Football Manager 3 Football Statistition 4 Office Girl 4 Gerri Meyer: Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 Basketball Cheerleader 1 Track 1, 2, 3, 4 Class Secretary 3, 4 Annual Staff 3, 4 Boys Basketball Statistition 3 Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Vice President Pep Club 4 Tom Montgomery: Transfer from Oregon 2 Wrestling 2, 3, 4 Football 2, 4 Dave Stewart: Football 1 Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 Track 3, 4 President 3 Member of Western Montana Bank Junior Board 3 Transfer from California 3 Wes Rammell: Cross-Country 1, 2, 3, 4 Wrestling 1, 2, 3, 4 Jeff Tanner: Football 1, 2, 3, 4 Wrestling 1, 2, 3, 4 House of Representatives 1 Class President 2 Wrestling, 3rd at State 2 Honor Roll 1, 2, 3, 4 Wrestled Japanese 2, 4 Wrestling, State Champion 3, 4 Jim Teafoe: Football 1, 2, 3, 4 Basketball 1 Track 1, 2,3,4 Drama 3 Beginners Band 3 Played Music in Your A Good Man Charlie Brown 4 Band 4 Faith Vannoy: Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Annual Staff 3 Chorus 3, 4 Creative Writing 2 Journalism 4 Lory Wilhelm: Cross Country 1 Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 Pep Club 1,2,3 Boys Basketball Cheerleader 1 Statistition 2, 3 Office Girl 4 Dawn Wood: Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 Track 1, 2, 3, 4 Pep Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Pep Club President 4 Chorus 1, 4 House of Representatives 2 Annual Staff 3 Homecoming Queen 4 Basketball Cheerleader 1 Alternate Cheerleader 3 r-r-S £g J ji f. sfeSSil v?Msr fc§? ■: £• -y:-y ■+ , , u'T .
