The 1977 football season was a season of many changes. Seeley-Swan High School was reclassified to Class C , had a new conference and was introduced to eight man foot- ball. The team was young with the sophomore class providing most die manpower, but despite their youth they had come to play football. The first game was against highly ranked Superior. The young Blackhawks trailed only 14-6 at half but the team's youth and inexperience proved fatal as the Hawks lost 42-6. The second game was non- conference with Arlee. Both teams played well and it went down to the wire. Trailing 14-12 Seeley-Swan took the ball to the 4 yardline with forty-five seconds left. A Not Pictured: Gretchen Foote Football ’77 fumble on the next play ended the drive and Arlee went home the victors. Three days later the Hawks hosted St. Regis. With the running of Tom Walker the Hawks had little trouble while subduing the Tigers 42-20. The fourth game was a disaster before it started. The team made it to the field ten minutes before the game, due to a myriad of delays. The Blackhawks played with worst game that day and fell 32-8. The fifth game was non-conference against the State Champion Charlo Vikings. As the players were announced to the spectators, it was obvious Charlo had much more experience starting eight seniors to S.S.H.S. 's one senior, two juniors and five sophomores. The Hawks were game with Bob Farra playing his most inspired game but experience usually wins over youth and Charlo won 40-0. Seeley Swan then went to Victor. The game was hard fought but under the leader- ship of Mike Bolam and 55 yd. touchdown jaunt by Jim Teafoe in the waning minutes the Hawks won 33-26. Then one of the four horsemen (disease) fell upon the Hawks. An epidemic of mumps decimated the team and the Blackhawks could soar no more and they subsequently lost to Drummond 27-0 and Florence 46-0. The football wars were over. The Hawks had learned much from that season and they knew that the next season the team would rally gain to fight another day, older, stronger and more experienced.
